Wonder Woman #778 Review!

Wonder Woman #778 is a trip through several worlds that amp up the fun with a shocking surprise!  Travis Moore provides the cover (and the covers since #770!) and interior art.  Moore has had art in previous issues of Wonder Woman.  It has Wonder Woman falling down the Multiverse with circular bands glimpsing the worlds she travels to in the comic.  This looks like Alice falling down the Rabbit Hole into Wonderland.  Siegfried is dangling from her right arm and Ratatosk swinging in on her right with the purple lasso, Brunnhilde’s rope?  “Afterworlds Part 9” by Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan has Siegfried and Wonder Woman in this limbo world of floating rocks and green skies.  They are met by a ghastly voice and a mummified man with a red cloak who says they are in the Phantom Zone.  This is the dimension from Superman that traps people into this desolate world.

Xa-Du as he calls himself will not let them leave the Phantom Zone.  The Phantom King was introduced in Action Comics #5 (2012).  Wonder Woman sees the portal cut by Janus start to close and Diana punches him, but the Phantom King breathes a torrent of flame!  This sends Siegfried back, falling over the cliff edge!, but he is plucked up by a red claw!  Siegfried is rescued by the dragon, Aethyr, who first appeared in The Phantom Zone #3 (1982).  The Phantom King defies Aethyr and tosses away Siegfried.  He did not like the violation of Janus and wants Diana to take care of Janus.  Then, he turns to deal with Xa-Du.  They travel through the portal to a strange world of city streets, there is a power plant called A.C.N.E. (funny!) and a signal with a squiggly line, and Ratatosk has heard a voice underneath some rubble.

Diana is back in her Lynda Carter-era satin tights.  She lifts up a large slab of concrete, tosses it aside, to find Bat-Mite.  The lil’ imp was first seen in Detective Comics #267 (1959) and rumor is that he will a major villain in the Matt Reeves The Batman movie, ok, that was a fifth dimensional trick.  They are about to team up to find Janus when a fire truck swings in and it’s Mr. Mxyzptlk, say his name three times in a mirror!  A long time Superman foe since Superman #30 (1944).  He has appeared on tv in Supergirl, Smallville, Lois and Clark, and in a comics accurate costume in Superboy.  Bat-Mite has a prank war with Mr. Mxyptlk since World’s Finest #113 (1960) that goes all the way to Superman and Batman: World’s Funnest GN (2000).  Mxy points out the direction of Janus and Bat-Mite leads his team, the Integriy Squad!  This panel is probably one of the best in “Afterworlds”, hilarious!

The next panels are great send ups of Batman: The Animated Series!  Bat-Mite has a monologue that also pokes fun at the Batman movies!  Plus, Diana breaks the fourth wall, hanging out of the panel saying they are in a rush.  Under a street light, they find Janus and her captive, Deadman, and Wonder Woman slams into her.  Janus slashes the air before Wonder Woman with her God Scraper and mentions building a future?  Diana knows that the future can't be built on anger.  The day is saved (?) by Bat-Mite jumping off of Janus’ head!  But wait there’s more!  Janus escapes with Deadman down her portal and Wonder Woman and friends pursue them.  After they have left, we have the first appearance of Wonder-Mite!, this issue is highly collectible, buy three issues!  This would mean that the trio could be the Fifth Dimension’s Trinity!  The best part is Bat-Mite and Mxy’s dialogue right out of Beavis, too funny!

The portal leads to a world of crystals, Gemworld?, and Diana has yet another costume change, gold armor with a purple cape.  Wonder Woman is able to lasso Janus, but doesn’t want her force her to comply.  Deadman wakes up and recognizes Gemworld.  Diana is trying to get Janus to remember a time when she was not as angry.  Janus slashes open another portal and Deadman says she needs him to find the way to Earth.  The next world the Wonder Gang end up is Tarzan world, love it!  Siegfried has the Tarzan lioncloth and Diana has the cavewoman outfit.  They see Janus, but without Deadman, she makes her escape.  Siegfried thinks of how his world changed traveling with Diana while he slashes the insect beasts Conan-style!  Diana finds herself in the empty world, now in a long, purple gown, and what she finds there is shocking!  Young Diana deals with her mother’s choice, she speaks with Magala, and wants to bring the truth to all of the Amazons!  Wonder Woman #778 has it all; sword fighting, revenge, Bat-Mite, chases through the Multiverse, escapes, to kinda quote Princess Bride, it's funny with great art and story!

Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zendar #1 Review!

Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zendar is a wild ride into a fantastic, sci fi world!  In 2020, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. and American Mythology have expanded the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe with novels, starting in 2018, and comic books.  ERB was a fantastic world builder like Tarzan’s Africa, the prehistoric world, Pal-ul-Don, hidden lands like the Hollow Earth of Pellucidar, the lost island of Caspak, the underground world beneath the Moon called Va-Nah in The Moon Maid.

Also there is the planet Venus better known as Amtor and Cosoom in Barsoomian, and of course the planet we know as Mars on Earth, but really named Barsoom.  Beyond the Farthest Star (1940) is a sci fi novel that takes his imagination outside of our system, 450,000 light years away at a system of eleven planets orbiting the star Omos.  It was intended to be a series, but only one book was made.  The novel covers only one world, Poloda, with the hero, Tangor, and now we have the first appearance of Zendar in the ERBverse.

The first issue has a cover by interior artist, Alessandro Renaldi, it has two women, one green-skinned alien with horns, and another woman, with a space suit and gold laser gun.  The background has giant mushrooms and rocky spires with the two women menaced by the points of spears.  The story has a story by Christopher Paul Carey who wrote the novel, Swords Against the Moon Men (2018) and is the ERB Universe creative director.

Also, the story is by scripter Mike Wolfer, who is a writer, artist, and also editor for American Mythology Productions.  The narrator, Victory Harben, speaks about the cosmos before reaching Omos and its system with equi-distant planets!  It’s some beautiful painted artwork of the Omos system and planets.  Victory Harben is a new character introduced in Carson of Venus: The Eye of Amtor #1 (2020).  She was part of a back-up story in the novel, Carson of Venus: Edge of All Worlds (2020) by Matt Betts.  Victory Harben moves through the universe by the Gridley Wave.

Victory suspects an alien intelligence with the formation of Omos and its planets and then focuses on Zendar.  It starts with a closeup of a bulky, alien creature, faces in their chest like the Bleemyai tribe, with a bony ridge on its head.  Its language is translated and we get the raiders taking apart a camp.  Victory Harben appears and the creatures are confused, but one gets a spear to kill Victory while she has a golden laser pistol.  She doesn’t understand the creatures at first, but Victory has a translator aura.  Victory fires first sending out a purple blast.

It strikes the creature who shrugs off the blast, it remarks in English translated by Victory, then is set on fire!  All of the raiders take off.  Then, we get the fallen green-skinned Zendar natives with a surviving Zendarian woman.  She turns and then in close-ups we see her rage.  She charges after Victory.  The woman strikes Victory with her clawed hand and then sends her flying back.  Victory tries to get away and then woman locks her down.  Then, she is caught by hand and leg and swung around to be thrown into mushrooms.  The clawed hand grabs Victory by the throat!

Victory is lifted into the air; Kyle Hill, science YouTuber, explained that the neck lift is an impossibility because of the muscles in the arm.  Victory takes out her pistol and then drops it to prove her innocence.  The native woman, also in English, asks why Victory sent her “people back to the water”?  Interesting, she does look evolved from an aquatic creature.  Victory explains that she is a traveler and describes the raiders whom the woman say are Keelars and recognize their spears.  She had seen the spears walking to the site of the murders.

The native woman takes a body of what she calls a Go-Vaas to a pool.  Victory says that she saw the Keelars take her people in jars.  This was at the beginning of the scene, but I’m not certain they carried away the jars.  The woman says the Go-Vaas are her people’s children and immediately runs after them.  Victory falls behind on the run and the woman with black eyes says her tribe is the Ki-Vaas and they are protected by the Zo-Vaas.  There is so much background introduced in a few scenes!

Then, the woman goes Tarzan swinging on a vine and leaving Victory on the massive tree branch.  It feels kinda Avatar (2009).  Victory is about go vine swinging when a strange dragon creature, it is later identified as a a Frozah, is about bite her.  They both face the Frozah loping towards them.  A small, white rodent hops in.  It is a companion for Victory Harben whom calls him Hucklebuck.  The critter swells up to a massive size complete with black horns, fangs, and claws.  It slashes at the Frozah sending it falling.  Hucklebuck goes back to pet size for Harben.

She introduces herself and finds the woman’s name is Tii-Laa.  She has tracked the Keelars, but is suspicious about Victory.  She asks if the stranger has come from “The Land of Fire” or is one of the “Numinous Ones.”  Victory has heard of the latter and Tii-Laa runs off without Victory, but of course she follows.  Tii-Laa, whom I would be surprised is not a princess, and Victory Harben, typical Burroughs stranger in a strange land, make a great team.  Beyond the Farthest Star: Zendar Warriors #1 has an intriguing world and mysteries with characters that has the Burroughs tone and is a fun adventure!

Happy Birthday Jack "King" Kirby!

Happy Birthday Jack Kirby!  To understand how comic books, superhero comics, the work and their appeal, you have to understand Jack Kirby.  His extreme poses and action exploding out of the panels are the language of superhero comic books today.  The King of Comics, started as an in-betweener at the Fleischer Studios working in animation.  Then, he started work at the Eisner & Iger studio creating artwork in many genres for Wild Boy Magazine.  Kirby moved to Fox Feature Syndicate working with writer Joe Simon on the Blue Beetle comic strip.  The duo worked together on Captain Marvel Adventures #1 (1941) for Fawcett Comics.  They joined Timely Comics, which later became Marvel Comics, and created Captain America Comics #1 (1941).  It sold out and became an iconic character for Timely/Marvel.  Captain America was the subject of a movie serial in 1944, some movies in 1979, a film in 1990, and entered the MCU played by Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).  The Simon and Kirby duo also created romance comics with Young Romance #1 (1947).

Kirby then worked for DC with the Challengers of the Unknown, a quartet of explorers who survive a jet crash to investigate strange dangers in Showcase #6 (1957).  In Challengers of the Unknown #3 (1958), written and drawn by Kirby, the group gets super powers including projecting flame and invisibility, hmm, makes me think of another super group.  Back at Marvel, he worked with Stan Lee introducing monsters like Groot in Tales to Astonish #13 (1960).  The tree-creature made his way to the screen in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).  What launched the Marvel Age of Comics in the Silver Age was Fantastic Four #1 (1961).  There have been numerous films that tried to capture the magic of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s creation including the recent Fantastic Four (2015).  They turned a monster into a hero with The Incredible Hulk #1 (1962) who had his MCU movie debut in Incredible Hulk (2008).  Then, Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 (1962).  Upcoming is Thor: Love and Thunder directed by Taika Waititi.  Thor’s step brother was introduced in Journey into Mystery #85 (1962) with Lee, Larry Leiber, and Kirby creating the comic book.  The God of Mischief has his own show on Disney+ entitled Loki which has a second season!

Lee and Kirby co-created Ant-Man in Tales to Astonish #35 (1962) with Larry Leiber.  Also, the Wasp in Tales to Astonish #44 (1963) with Ernie Hart.  The next film is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set for release in 2023.  Next, the team co-created Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 (1963).  2008's Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Lee and Kirby brought the heroes together in The Avengers #1 (1963).  Avengers: Endgame (2019), featured the characters.  The duo also created Black Panther in Fantastic Four #52 (1966).  In 1977, Kirby wrote and drew the Black Panther series.  The character was featured in his own film in Black Panther (2018) and work has begun on the sequel.  The Lee and Kirby duo created the X-Men and villain Magneto in X-Men #1 (1963).  The last X-Men movie is Dark Phoenix (2019).  When Kirby went to DC Comics, he created the Fourth World drawing and writing New Gods #1 (1970)  and also their nemesis Darkseid, whom Kirby introduced in Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134 (1970).  Kirby returned to Marvel and created his own corner of the Marvel Universe in The Eternals #1 (1976).  Their film comes out on November 5th.  Jack Kirby was pioneering in comic books, animation, he created film concept art that was used by the CIA seen in Argo (2012).  He died in 1994, but his legacy will always be remembered by comic fans and audience members who love DC Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Happy Birthday Jack Kirby!

Superman `78 #1 Review!

This is the most expected comic for me, Superman `78, with the return of Christopher Reeve’s Superman!  There were two specials; Superman the Movie in All-New Collector’s Edition C-62 and Superman II as part of the DC Special Series #25 (1981) that were tabloid sized magazines based on the film without any comic book adaptations.  Superman III Movie Special #1 (1983) is by Cary Bates and Curt Swan.  It was the first Superman adaptation in comic book form.  Then Superman IV: The Quest for Peace #1 (1987) by Bob Rozakis and Curt Swan.  Next was Superman Returns The Movie Adaptation (2006) with Martin Pasko and Matt Haley.  There were a series of prequels to the movie; Krypton to Earth, Ma Kent, Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane released in 2006.  The story was by director Bryan Singer and screenwriters Michael Doughtery and Dan Harris.  There was no Man of Steel comic that I’ve seen, but there were four issues of General Mills Presents Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) found in cereal at the time.

Superman `78 #1 has a cover by interior artist, Wilfredo Torres, of Superman flying up with Brainiac’s skull ship behind him.  It first appeared in Action Comics #544 (1983) and showed up in live action form in the series Krypton (2018-2019).  Torres was the artist for the Batman `66 comic book.  The foreground has a large figure of Lois Lane, the very good Margot Kidder version, on the bottom is Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, and above him is Brainiac.  Torres on Twitter said that he based Brainiac on the likeness of Yul Brenner, who was in Westworld (1973).  The supervillain was an early foe for Superman from Action Comics #242 (1958).  He was played by James Marsters in Smallville and Blake Riston in Krypton.  Super powered villains really weren’t in movies and tv at that time so it’s great to see Brainiac. Torres is clever in having the background broken with Metropolis on the left and Krypton on the right.  “Brainiac Chapter One” is written by Robert Venditti and art by Torres in this sex issue limited series.  Venditti wrote for Justice League.  The first page is a tribute to Richard Donner, not only director of Superman the Movie (1978), but co-writer of “The Last Son” storyline in Action Comics #844-845 (2007) and Annual 11 (2008) and then Action Comics #855-857 (2007) had the “Escape From Bizarro World” stories.

Jor-El’s message to his son is heard as his capsule leaves Krypton which we are told is 21.7 light years from Earth. We have moments with Lara and Jor-El, they have cartoony likenesses of the actors, in which she wonders if Kal-El is safe.  It’s great that they have words before the destruction of Krypton.  The fragments of the planet pass and a ship is there, monitored by the robotic voice of Brainiac, seen in closeup.  He calls it a dangerous civilzation.  Then, we get the streets of Metropolis, Clark is trying to catch up to Lois.  He is worried about a meeting with Perry White while she is busy getting breakfast, turns out to be hot dogs from a cart vendor.  He notices a purse snatcher running away, he lowers his glasses, this panel is a perfect likeness of Reeve.  He uses his heat vision to give the thief a literal hot foot, burning the sole of his shoe.  The thief jumps into an alley puddle next to two Metropolis P.D. officers!  Later, at the Daily Planet, Perry White is angry at Clark for his story on a dog show while Jimmy Olsen stands next to him.  I like the artwork for Jackie Cooper and Reeves’ characters here.  While they are talking, an object falls from space, Perry and Clark feel the explosion, actually Clark would detect the object well before its descent.

The impact in Metropolis is the arrival of the robotic Brainiac!  This form was also introduced in Action Comics #544.  The robot, apparently a drone, accesses the planet and begins blasting apart the area including Shuster Station.  The first movie basically had New York landmarks and not many references to Superman’s creators.  Clark begins to run getting ready to turn into Superman, shouldn’t this be at super speed?  Then, he flies into the scene.  Lois and Jimmy are trying through the crowds to witness Brainac’s rampage.  Superman flies in along with a heat vision blast.  Then, checks with officers before the robot grabs Superman’s neck and slams him down.  It tries to analyze Superman before he introduces himself.

The robot determines that he may be Kryptonian and sends a blast that sends Superman smashing through an office building until striking an alley wall.  The scene is very much like Superman II (1980).  The Brainiac bot had used yellow sun radiation and concludes Superman is Kryptonian, while full charged Superman bashes the bot until he loses his head like Rock `Em, Sock `Em Robot!  The drone has sent a distress signal to the mother ship and Superman, Hamlet-like, holds up the head and wonders what is a Brainac?  The deadly villain will be headed to Earth soon!  Torres’ artwork sometimes has the actors’ likeness, other times, they are rendered simply, but with many lines on the face.  Superman `78 #1 brings back the action and the setting of the original movie, but with the unlimited resources of a comic book!

The Outpost, ”The Power of the Masters”, Review!

At the Capital, Vorta has Falista and Tobin kneel before them.   Zed walking with Jake is stopped by the Zinj.  Talon with Luna also hears Vorta.  The demon holds up Falista and vaporizes her!, we lost Falista!, her Zinj attaches to the “god.”  Tobin slashes off the demon’s hand and he teleports.  The awakened demon sends a blast of flame at Tobin.  He manages to teleport away and pats out the flames on his vest.  He screams at the pain of losing Falista.  Janya uses her Zinj to reform the demon’s hand.  Teroc wants to hunt the human.  Kaltor, new demon, is given power from the she demon, Janya.  She has Two’s memory and can find the Skeligor.  At the sanctuary, Talon tells Luna she is brave, but Luna feels that she failed her sister.  Luna might have the memory to find the key and she goes back into the chambers with the bodies.  Luna reaches a barred gate and enters.  She walks to a pedestal, flashes back a person bleeding on it, and sees Dred pulling up the key that looks like a staff.  Zed and Garret enter The Outpost and under crossbows and spears held by guards, Garret shows Tobin’s ring, and takes the captain’s sword and holds it to his neck.

He swears loyalty to King Tobin.  Zed says to them that he saw Tobin giving him the ring.  King Garret?  So he would be a counterpart to Queen Talon?  The captain has the guards set aside their weapons.  Garrett gives the captain the order to keep watch.  At the Capital, Tobin flashes back to his moments with Falista.  He sees the demons ride off on horses and teleports.  Another flash back, Luna remembers a chamberlain walking away from Dred.  Talon asks if her name is Naya (Amita Suman) and heads off to her town.  She was last seen in "This Is Our Outpost" in season 2.  Nedra throws daggers when Zed enters, she is still angry at him for leaving the Blackbloods behind.  At the lab, Wren gives a bowl of water to the sleeping demon (Pavle Jerinic), Janzo wonder why he is in chains.  She shows Janzo the markings that he is a killer.  Janzo wants to work out the markings and then the demon wakes up!  Talon tells Luna that Naya sent a letter to Janzo.  At the tavern, Garret meets with Janzo and Wren, Janzo says there are seven of the “gods.”  They are working out the nature of the Zinj and the “gods.”  Wren and Janzo take them to see the prisoner, but he has escaped!  Garret and Zed, demon slayers?, go to find the escaped prisoner.

Night at The Outpost, Warlita hears a sound, it is the demon, she screams.  Munt chases him off.  Morning, they go to find Naya, and Talon asks a woman before Luna shows a coin, but slips it away after she points out the direction.  Naya is working on a carpet and brings Luna and Talon to a table.  Naya tells them Dred took the key to the reliquary.  Garret, Zed, and Warlita are talking and then hear Munt trying to hold the demon with a pitchfork.  Zed uses his Zinj to force him away as a prisoner.  Garret tries to question the demon in the prison cage.  Zed says he can only control the demon’s body not his mind.  Janzo wants to try to make him an ally and sends the others away.  At the tavern, Zed takes a seat next to Nedra, and shares a memory of one of the lost Blackbloods.  She doesn’t forgive him for leaving them in the Plane of Ashes.  Still, I sense a possible romance when Nedra can forgive Zed.  In the forest, Luna walks with her bow, Talon and Naya are behind her.  She is still angry that Naya didn’t try more to save her sister.  The Outpost tavern, Garret goes to talk with Zed.  He says that Talon has gone cold to him.  Talon, Luna, and Naya reaches a monument with the Reliquary under it, but there doesn’t seem to be an entrance.

The caged demon eats his meal as Janzo watches and then Munt brings more food.  Janzo asks him about the Masters.  He offers to take him to the underground where he found the demon.  Janzo asks his name and he says 313, an area code?.  He admits he serves the Masters and has to listen to Vorta.  At the monument, they see the statues guarding the Reliquary.  Naya goes to activate levers at the torch bowls.  Talon and Luna have bows and take down the two guards rushing towards Naya.  Another guard attacks, but Naya stabs him with a sword.  She admits that she killed Dred and Luna wants to owe a deb to her.  Janzo and Wren follow 313 to the cavern.  He is examining everything and realizes that he is the only one awake and tries to stab his neck with the tube, but can’t connect with it.  Wren is looking at her books, to find navia, the "voice of the soul".  Garrett arrives with Zed who uses his Zinj to control 313.  He warns Janzo to be careful that there are others like him and doesn’t want Janzo’s investigation to end up with everyone dead.  Naya will lead Talon and Luna to the Reliquary, but they also have to face the danger there.  The show always has a cost to characters and cast members, we get to know them, but they may not survive, Falista and Georgia May Foote will be missed!  The Outpost ties back to the first season with Dred, but also the Masters and their power!
