Re:tro Re:view - Star Pig #1!

Star Pig #1 (2019) floats into our galaxy with teen girl, Vess, caught up in a funny, sci fi adventure!  The IDW mini-series features a cover by Sara Richard.  It has the Star Pig climbing on a ringed planet while Vess carelessly listens to music on a moon. The graphics make it look like a school folder.  The creative team has writer, Delilah S. Dawson, who has the novel, the Violence, and also the fantasy series, Ladycastle.  Also, there is the art of Francesco Gaston, the artist of Ms. Marvel #18 (2017) and Monsters Unleashed #9 (2017) for Marvel Comics.  We have a space bus headed into space, in the cockpit, the teacher asks about their distance to Ferdowski Station.

She is told about some turbulence and she tells the cadets of the NAASA Space Camp about being strapped in.  There is of course a real Space Camp, but I keep thinking of the sci fi movie SpaceCamp (1986). I like the Space Camp logo on jackets.  16 year old, Vess, is too busy listening to her retro Discman.  Then, some thumping on the hull gets her attention.  Her fellow cadet, Dooder, updates her on the turbulence, but it is more than that disturbance!  She tries to get her belt on as air masks drop down.  Vess takes a crash position and Dooder tells her she doesn’t have her harness on as the astroid collisions continue!  A fiery cosmic body, a comet?, shatters the hull of the spacecraft.

It sends Vess into space without her air mask as the chair of Dooder also floats!  This is a splash page with an insert panel.  Vess thinks her farewell to her family, her moms and Jeyd.  Vess drifts into unconsciousness as her body turns blue.  Then, a gaping pink mouth swallows her!  I keep thinking of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy where the Heart of Gold ship manages to take in Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect as they drift in space.  Vess revives, I like her expressions, “What the Beck?”  A voice apologizes to her.  I like Gaston’s art style which reminds me a bit of Amanda Conner.  It is the telepathic voice of the Space Pig who doesn’t know its identity.  The Star Pig, a Tardigrade like in Star Trek: Discovery, but pink, is seen in a splash page above the broken space craft and Dooder still floating!

It is segmented with chitin and has six stubby legs.  Vess walks around the Star Pig’s gusts and she makes a connection with the Sarlaac!  It says it won’t digest her.  Star Pig tells Vess that the others are in “a state of Tun”, hibernating, or Vess adds, dead.  We see the body of the teacher in space, gruesome.  Vess wants to know what is happening.  Star Pig can only explain that it was experimented on, escaped, and they have to wait for scavengers.  It seems content to sit on the remains of the engines.  Vess wonders if it has any weapons, but Star Pig explains it’s just a large space pig!  It mentions that Earth is popular in the univese and that scavengers will arrive to take artifacts.

Then, we have the arrival of the scavengers’ ship, a saucer-shaped, massive, yellow ship, with two large mandibles and a glass dome.  Vess has a panic attack while the scavengers bring everything including the Tardigrade with a tractor beam.  Star Pig notes he can survive almost anything. Tardigrades, also called water bears, are microcopic, 0.020 inches long.  Something like The Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. Inside the hold of the ship are the bodies of Dooder and Mrs. Lanning, Vess passes out.  In the ship’s hold, they are discovered by a strange, purple cloud with several eyes in the front of its mass.  It also is trapped in the lingo of the 50’s.  The spore cloud, calling itself Johnny B. Goode, considers the human, Vess, as a collectible, and also Space Pig as a rare secret to immortality!  Vess somehow has to survive these two bizarre entities in the first issue of Space Pig!

Baymax! Review!

Baymax! fulfills his duties as a personal health care companion in this animated short series!  He is a popular character that has spun out of the Big Hero 6 (2014) movie directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams.  This in turn led to Big Hero 6: The Series (2017-2021) with most of the original cast returning to voice their characters.  It originally started out in Marvel Comics, chronologically with the Sunfire and the Big Hero 6 limited series.  The first issue was released on July 1, 1998 was by Scott Lobdell and Guz Vasquez.  This was released before the team’s creators produced Alpha Flight #17 (October 14, 1998) by the creative team of Steve Seagle and Duncan Rouleau with assists by Gus Vazquez.

Seagle and Rouleau are part of the group, Man of Action Entertainment along with Joe Kelly and Joe Casey.  Man of Action created the Ben 10 show and worked on other animated series.  Don Hall is executive producer of Baymax! which debuted on Disney+ on June 29th!  There are six episodes of the show and the first episode is directed by  Dean Wellins.  The first episode, “Cass”, is only 12 minutes long, but is packed with funny moments!  It has the series intro with Baymax’s eyes, two dots and a line, showing scenes from the episodes and also Baymax’s distinctive red lollipop treat. He walks past a background scroll of the city of San Fransokyo.  It is a perfect fusion city since the comics had Tokyo as a setting, but combines with San Francisco!  Then, he steps into his red charging bay that he travels on and also deflates for portability.

The map of San Fransokyo comes up and then tracker moves to the location of the episode.  We close in until we get the Lucky Cat Cafe, is a clever nod to the maneki-neko, the white good luck cat with the swinging paw, a setting of the film.   It’s a quiet day in San Fransokyo with a line of pink cherry blossom trees.  A line of customers patiently wait for the opening, it is seen by Cass (Maya Rudolph) and her chubby cat, Mochi.  Cass opens the cafe and serves several customers.  She refills cups before being asked while talking to customers about their novel and haircut, knowing all their names, and cleaning up all at the same time.  Cass is the superhero of baristas.  She carries a tray full of cups and plates while talking to Sayaka.  Then, trips over a step stool!

Sayaka runs over to check on her and Cass is on the floor saying, “Ow! My ankle!”, then realizes what is going to happen!  She tries to shush Sayaka, but can hear the whirring over head.  Cass climbs up to the counter as some squishy, carbon fiber feet walk towards her!  Sayaka is confused when Baymax (Scott Adsit) introduces himself.  Adsit’s voice is endearingly calm and repetitive.  He repeats her painful remark.  Baymax scans her and immediately says, “Scan complete.”  He holds Cass as she collapses when he gives his diagnosis, a sprained ankle.  Baymax has Cass resting on the couch up stairs and gives her ankle a cyro spray from his finger.  He recommends that she rest for several days.  She worries about her customers and notices that Baymax is downloading data on running a small business!

He says that her worry over the cafe is causing her stress which won’t help her healing.  Baymax walks down trying to reassure her.  Cass installs a camera on Mochi’s head, a funny moment, and then we see the cat’s perspective, then he batters the camera. Cass resolves to check on the cafe on her own.  Baymax slowly pumps caramel creme into a cup.  The line of customers are not amused.  Then, he tries to put on a lid that keeps popping.  I’m rolling in laughter at this point.  Cass just wants to serve her customers at any cost, Baymax is well meaning, but just takes his time.  We have some dramatic moments with Cass’ promise.  I really like in the credits, “Dedicated to all of our healthcare professional heroes.”  There is also a fun end credit scene with Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter)!    Baymax! works best as a healthcare companion, his purpose, more than a superhero, but there are laughs at other’s reactions and Baymax helping save the day!

Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen!

Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen!  He was inspired by King Kong (1933) and worked with stop motion pioneer from that film, Willis O’Brien, on Mighty Joe Young (1949). Harryhausen worked on his own technique called Dynamation which integrated live action with his stop motion work in The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953). The story was based on Ray Bradbury's "The Fog Horn" and they had a life long friendship.  Harryhausen began a long time partnership with producer Charles H. Schneer with It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955). His next movie spun off the alien invasion films with Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956).  Harryhausen ventured into the realms of fantasy and the Land Beyond Beyond in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958).

He made creatures like the cyclops and the dragon into living, breathing animals.  It stands as my favorite Harryhausen film.  A film that has the wonder of Jonathan Swift's novel was The 3 Worlds of Gulliver (1960).  Another favorite Harryhausen movie was Mysterious Island (1961) which had a group of Civil War soldiers stranded on an island filled with a giant crab and giant bees.  A fan favorite of Harryhausen’s films is Jason and the Argonauts (1963). The skeleton fight at the end is one of the best special effects sequences.  First Men in the Moon (1964) based on the H.G. Wells 1901 novel which also inspired A Trip to the Moon (1902). One Million Years B.C. (1966) is a classic for Raquel Welch’s fur bikini alone with cavemen battling dinosaurs.  Then, there was The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977).

Harryhausen’s final film was Clash of the Titans (1981). Superior to the CG remake, it has the beauty of the Pegasus and a terrifying Medusa, I saw at a Harryhausen exhibit that the model has tiny threads of red hair which I didn’t see on film!  Dr. Marston was played by Harryhausen in the comedy, Spies like Us (1985).  The film was directed by John Landis.  Ray Harryhausen appeared with the actress from his Mighty Joe Young, Terry Moore, in the 1988 remake. He received the George E. Sawyer Award at the 1992 Academy Awards.  Another Landis film, Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) had Harryhausen as one of a bar's patrons.  Harryhausen wrote Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life (2010) and The Art of Ray Harryhausen (2006). Harryhausen died in 2013, but his work continues with the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, his films, and museum exhibits. Happy Birthday Ray Harryhausen!

Superman and Lois, “Waiting for Superman”, Review!

It is the finale of Superman and Lois!  Ally has begun the merging of the Inverse (Bizarro) World with Earth, she has drained Superman of his powers!, and John Henry is lost leaving Natalie behind!  The episode’s title refers to the 2010 documentary, but this is a better story.   The episode begins with Chrissie Beppo giving the account sanctioned by the Department of Defense, a look around the world, as we see the orangish worlds collide!  Chrissie gets only the message of Lois.  The result is the same with Lana, Sofia is the only one who saw Kyle leave, Lana tells her daughters they will look for their father.  There is lightning or a flash as the distortion runs in the Kent house.  Almost everyone is there; Clark, Lois, Jordan, Natalie, and Jonathan.

They have shifted to the Bizarro World and Natalie sees her tablet hoping to contact her father.  Lois is concerned about the merging turning them into parasites.  Clark tells her that they won’t let that happen.  This is all outside of their experiences.  Natalie is on the porch working on her tablet, the Kent boys try to reassure her, and Natalie goes over her mother’s death in the other world and never having final words.  Then, John Henry’s distorted voice is heard!  Jordan says he is in the voide between worlds.  Natalie has worked out that her father needs her escape pod.  Then, we have the entrance of Tal-Rho!, he says his return is important since his brother is powerless.  The kitchen flickers again.  They all shift and then appear in the house on Earth, but Jordan realizes his mother is missing!

Lois is in the broken down house of the Bizarro World!  She sees the El post office box as the farmhouse and barn flicker!  Then, Sam Lane from Earth runs up to his daughter.  They need to find someone who can help them, Lois mentions Chrissie.  In the Earth house, there is the sudden entrance of Bizarro Lois!  Natalie runs out to get her suit.  Jordan and Jonathan want her not to enter the portal.  Jonathan says she is their family, Natalie hugs her brothers, but leaves.  Sarah leaves a message for her father’s phone, Lana finds that a store owner hadn’t seen Kyle, there is another shift.  A mini-van comes out nowhere and crashes, but there is no driver inside.  Tal-Rho likes Lois’ “Corpse Bride” look.  Funny.  Clark wants to try to fight for the world, Tal says he wants to fight for the only family he’s known.  He flies into space to confront Ally, she stops him, draining his power.

Jordan has heard Tal scream.  Clark tells him to help him and escape.  Jordan sends Ally spinning into space and then streaks down to rescue his uncle.  They slam in front of the farmhouse.  Clark says that there is someone who can stop her, himself!  Jordan reminds his father that his cells are not absorbing the sun.  Clark says he needs a jumpstart!  Tal-Rho says he was the Eradicator, directly taking in the sun’s energy, and floated around for weeks.  Clark says Tal-Rho has to throw him at the sun.  He says he was sent to Earth to be Superman.  Jonathan says he sounds like his mother.  Clark tells him, “That’s because she’s the smartest person in our family.”  This makes clear how important Lois is to all of them.  He tells his son not to lose hope.   Tal-Rho superspeeds Clark his costume.  Then, they both head to the sun.

Natalie orders the A.I. to enter her escape pod and fly with her to the mines.  Lana goes to the firehouse asking about Kyle.  The mayor tells Kyle’s coworkers to go to their families.  Sam and Lois sees the streets with Ally’s followers holding their arms out.  They see Bizarro Chrissie who gets out a translator.  Sam Lane disappears and then Chrissie!  Lois sees a plane that crashed into a building!  More flashes and then a jet flies overhead.  Next, Kyle is there who has lost his family on the Bizarro World!  John Henry gives his final message and needed the X-K in the pod to destroy the portals.  Natalie didn’t bring it.  Tal-Rho has taken Superman to the edge of the sun.  They do have a conversation in the vacuum of space.  Tal-Rho flies them towards the sun and then throws him to the surface!  He says, “Earth is lucky to have you.”  Superman cries out in pain.

Natalie and John Henry are floating between worlds. She brings up the plan to divert the X-K from their suits to the pod.  John Henry agrees and they start the power transfer.  Bizarro Worlds, Lois and Kyle see that more followers are being transported.  Kyle blames himself for losing his family and kneels crying.  Lois consoles him and then he flashes away.  She watches as the Earth moves closer.  Kyle looks up to find himself on Earth with confused people wandering the street.  He calls out for his family and then sees them.  Jordan and Jonathan see the suns merge and then rush up to their grandfather.  He reassures them that he just saw Lois.  The sons start to argue, Sam Lane stops them from arguing, and says he saw other worlds with leagues on them.  He says, “He’s the finest of any Earth.”  Bizarro Lois watches all of this, could this be a Lois to fall for John Henry?

Superman screams bathed in the heat of the sun, he sees visions of his sons Lois, this calms him and then takes in the energy!  The escape pod flies towards the merge.  It separates the suns.  Ally is still there and Superman explodes out of the sun’s energy!  Natalie gives her farewell message to her father as their air runs out. She says, “You’ve always been my hero.”  Nice family moment in a sci fi setting.  Ally flies towards them, but they separate.  A submarine crashes into the Kent fields.  Sam Lane tells his grandsons to run.  John Henry and Natalie land brought there by Superman!  Lois sees Clark hurtle past her.  Then, past Smallville citizens and Mayor Lana.  His suit is ablaze with sun’s energy pulsing through the partitions of his suit and into his chest symbol!  He collides with Ally holding her wrists.  She tries to drain his energy and he tells her take more, overloading her!

The Allys shriek and Superman punches them separating Allys that fall to Earth.  He flies down and then puts them in the hands of John Henry and Natalie.  Then, Superman streaks around Earth, a fantastic call back to Superman the Movie (1978)!  This is all to build enough momentum to fly down and shatter the worlds apart!  These visuals are so epic, setting the standard for Superman effects in any movie or television program.  He lands on the streets of Smallville to the applause of Kyle, Lana, their kids, Chrissie, and finally Lois who just says, “Superman.”  We see fireworks in the Smallville skies including one in the shape of Superman’s symbol.  Kids run into the street as Superman or John Henry and Natalie.  This under the banner, “Miracle Monday”, this is another callback to the 1981 Superman novel written by super scribe, Elliot S. Maggin.

Mayor Lana is giving a speech ending with “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow”, ok, the new Superman slogan, forgiven.  Superman flies by overhead.  Everyone applauds.  She is congradulated by Clark who apologizes for not being there for her campaign.  Chrissie is eager to see Lois’ article, but she is told that Clark is Superman.  She realizes that Lois is telling her the truth, but is not shocked.  Lois says she was dating him for “several months” before she knew.  Months, not years!  Everyone is buying Superman merch. Jonathan is friendly with Candice.  By a tractor, Jordan talks to Sarah, she says she didn’t apologize to him for her kiss at camp.  They agree to a do-over.  Night, John Henry shares rhubarb pie with Natalie.  Clark starts a dance with Lois as Chrissie stares at them.  Kyle asks Lana for a dance.  She is not ready.  Kyle still asks for a last dance.  Clark and Lois look at them.  Later, Lois sees the two Allys guarded in their cells, she asks if there was a time when they were complete.  The two Allys hold hands, not alone.

Clark and his sons see two, new trucks given by Uncle Tal.  Jonathan enters the truck.  Bizarro World, Tal-Rho enters a bar and offers drinks to everyone.  The bartender mentions the trouble from his wife and he asks her name.  Entering the diner, John Henry sees John Diggle (David Ramsey) from A.R.G.U.S.  He brings up Bruno Mannheim, the boss of Intergang, he was introduced in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #139 (1971).  Diggle tells him that Mannheim had killed John Henry Irons on this Earth!  A mystery!  At the farm, Lois says goodbye to Lucy who is driven to Metropolis by Sam Lane. The family takes a boat out to sea, Jonathan says Jordan is sea sick!, Clark wants to do this as a family.  He says his mother, Lara, has never seen Jonathan and she may have Kryptonian technology for him.  Clark throws a crystal out to the water.  Suddenly, the icy spires burst from the sea, a Kent family miracle, a new Fortress of Solitude!  Clark says, “It’s only the beginning.”  I would like to see the return of Amy Jo Johnson, Elizabeth Henstridge, and David Ramsey into the director chairs!  The Superman and Lois finale defines again best of this series; the family, hope, and sacrifice of Superman and the entire cast!

Ms. Marvel, “Destined”, Review!

The episode begins with a distant flashback to “British Occupied India, 1942”, the time of the Partition.  We hear smashing noises.  A wall with ancient reliefs.  There is digging and removal of artifacts, very Indiana Jones.  A black woman of this archelogical team, Fariha (Aduka Ononogbo) tosses a helmet. Najima, whom we just saw last episode, has found the bangle.  She gets the attention of Fariha and Saleem (Dan Carter). The bangle is on a severed, blue arm!  Aisha (Mehwish Hayat) walks up saying a man at the temple says they need two bangles.  She removes the bangle.  Fariha says the British most likely took the other bangle.  The British soldiers outside threaten them and the temple is rocked by cannon fire.  Najima sends Fariha to find Aadam.

Fariha says the British Army is burning the temple!  Aisha puts on the bangle, it glows as well as her eyes.  Fiery debris starts to fall.  Najima tells Aisha to take another exit while she joins the others.  She promises to return and then the temple starts to collapse.  Night, at Aadam,’s house, she picks up the narrative for Kamala.  She explains that they are from another dimension and says they were exiled.  This actually reminds me of a book, The Toybox (1995), by Jackie Cassada. It is based on the Changeling the Dreaming role-playing game.  Six changelings, faeries trapped in human bodies, are trying to find a remaining portal to return to their world of Arcadia.  Aadam (Ali Alsaleh) is amused by popcorn, the comedian of the group, Kamala wonders about their age. Aadam says Kamran is 17 to Kamala’s relief.

Najima smiles and agrees with what Kamran said, “she’s adorable.” She takes Kamala away as the others are caught up in conversations.  Kamala thanks Najima for saving her and she is told that they didn’t know about her.  Then, they detect Noor, which Kamala translates as light.  I wonder if Dagger from Cloak & Dagger uses her Lightforce powers from that dimension?  Najima explains that Noor slows down aging, but they can’t tap into its full power.  She thinks Kamala can use the power since she is from this Earth.  Kamran’s power has not been released since he doesn’t have a bangle.  Kamala thinks bad things happen because of it, but Najima says it led them to her.  It is offered by Kamala to Najima, the One Ring handed by Frodo to Galadriel?  Najima explains in the Noor dimension, they are known as Clan Destine.  I was surprised, this was a group created by Alan Davis, first appearing in Marvel Comics Presents #148 (1994). It was lead by Adam Destine.

Kamala is told they are known by many names including Djinn, this is the childhood boogie man for Kamala, the basis is an Arabic spirit that later was known as genies.  Kamala is a “Genie in a Bottle”!  I love the background!  The djinn Elalyth married Adam Destine and she came from a land called Yden.  This feels like the show is breaking away, slightly, from its comic book roots where the comic book has Kamala with Inhuman genes activated by a Terrigen bomb.  I prefer this version.  Kamala bursts into Bruno’s room, she sidetracks saying she doesn’t like the name Night Light, funny!  She explains what happened to her after the rescue.  Kamala is there to ask for his help.  She asks him about interdimensional travel and also the Noor dimension.  This reminds him of a paper by Dr. Erik Selvig!  We see the Damage Control car pull up and Agent Deever walks with other agents into the mosque.  She asks Sheikh Abdullah about the enhanced individual “operating” from his mosque.

Deever wants the agents to search the place, but Nakia says she has no legal right!  She says Damage Control that they can’t enter private property without a warrant.  Something Nakia learned from Law & Order, but really shows her leadership as a console member, no one else stepped up.  Sheikh Abdullah tells them to come back with a warrant and to remove their shoes!  Kamala watches the videos from the previous night, look at Iman Vellani’s face that go through all kinds of emotions!  Nakia enters and crashes on the bed. She sees Kamala’s video and recognizes Night Light, but doesn’t like the name, funny running joke!  She explains that Damage Control agents entered the mosque and also that Nakia was voted in as board member.  Kamala is too distracted to notice her friend’s accomplishment!  They get ready for the Mehndi Party, a pre-wedding party where the bride gets mehndi or henna designs on her hands and feet.  Tyesha is surprised about the number of family members.

Aamir enters and says that the tradition is to hide one pairs of shoes, but they hid all of his shoes!  It is brought up to Sheikh Abdullah about the agents.  Then, Muneeba mentions that Bruno had dropped by with a box.  Kamala goes alone outside on the porch with the box.  Sheikh Abdullah walks out and talks with her.  Kamala is doubtful she is good as a superhero, then she is told it is the actions that make people good.  Wise advice. Kamala opens the box to find a blue-green, gold-rimmed mask!  Night at the Circle Q, Bruno is at the register, Yusuf asks if he can keep a secret.  Then, brings up a fruit pie forbidden by his wife!  Yusuf laughs and sees that Bruno is reading about the Djinn.   Yusuf offers to translate the pages written in Urdu, this amuses him, and he tells of the hidden Djinn.  Later, at his room, Kamala is feeling her injuries, and Bruno says his research informed him that interdimensional travel is possible.  It would need a power source like the sun.

I’m thinking that maybe Aisha was looking for the other bangle and together they would have Captain Marvel level power?  Kamala wants the non-technical explanation and Bruno says that once the Djinn travel back, it could be destructive.  She thinks that this might be her purpose, not being a superhero, and Bruno finally admits he was accepted by CalTech. Kamala is in the bathroom when Muneeba sees the injury that is explained by a fall from Kamala’s bike.  She asks her mother about getting her dream, but not as she expected.  Muneeba says to her America was her mountain, but it was a struggle.  Slowly, she found her mosque, friends, and of course family.

Muneeba says Kamala doesn’t have to take on her challenges alone, tearfully Kamala hugs her mother.  She gets a text from Kamran writing she wants to help, but worried.  Kamran says to focus on the wedding.

Then, we get the wedding the next day!  Feels a little Sixteen Candles (1984), but more of a drama.  Aamir paces and Yusuf puts on his coat.  He worries about the funds in his bank account.  Yusuf encourages him that he has chosen love and is brave.  Kamala overhears the conversation and is also inspired.  Sheikh Abdullah presides over the ceremony with both sets of parents at either side.  He has Tyesha and then Aamir answer three times if they will take each other as husband and wife.  These quiet, family moments are the best parts of Ms. Marvel and beautiful.  Everyone cheers for the married couple.  Najima sees Kamran’s phone, he tells her Kamala thinks it’s dangerous, and his mother knows.  She wants the return to happen at any cost!  At the wedding after party, Aamir and Tyesha Kahn sit on chairs at the edge of the stage.

Their heads are made to touch explained to Bruno by Ruby. Then, we get a lively dance, with Yusuf and Muneeba. Tyesha’s parents join the dance.  Then, Kamala and Nakia have a dance line, and Bruno joins them.  Next, it is Aamir and Tyesha.  It is awesome, very Bollywood, and more natural to the story as a celebration than Kingo’s dance in The Eternals (2021).  Following the dance is the tribute band, Brown Jovi!  Kamran enters as Kamala asks Bruno to dance.  She warns Kamala about the Clan Destine.  Kamala activates the fire alarm.  Kamran tries to stop his mother.  Kamala sees Saleem take down a security guard.  She reaches the kitchen, but Saleem and Fariah enter.  Aadam knocks out one of the cooks and they all run.  The battle begins all to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”!  A battle with Kamala outmatched!  Ms. Marvel, “Destined”, has Aamir’s wedding with many cultural touches, the introduction of the ClanDestine, but will Kamala survive against them?

Ms. Marvel, “Crushed” Part Two, Review!

Ms. Marvel continues with “Crushed” where she encounters new boy, Kamran, and learns about the bangle connected to her powers!  Re:run last episode - Kamala’s family stand above her, surrounding her, trying to check on Kamala.  Later, she is in her room calling nani, Sana Ali (Samina Ahmad) on her cell phone, Kamala asks about the bangle.  Nani says it came from her mother, Aisha, who disappeared in the Partition.  We had Muneeba upset about the talk of the Partition, but the key to it all is Aisha!  Yusuf walks up the stairs and overhears the conversation.  He asks for Kamala, but she is undercover trying to ask about Aisha.  Yusuf tries to enter the door, but Kamala slams it just with her powers!  This has to be the best use of a superpower!

He finally enters, but Kamala pretends to just have wakened.  The next morning, Yusuf tries to convince his son to have Bon Jovi cover band, Muneeba says Slippery When Wet is how they met!  Very funny!  Of course, Bon Jovi is a New Jersey band, makes sense.  She is applying eyeliner to Kamala who shrugs at the mention.  Aamir has to walk away.  Kinda funny!  Kamala brings up Aisha, but this makes her mother suddenly serious, saying she moved to America to get away from the shame Aisha brought to the family.  Tyesha enters and she is familiar with Bon Jovi.  At the Eid Mubarak celebration, Aamir and Tyesha are there, and Bruno has his outfit which he thinks is too bright.  Muneeba is happy.  Last episode, we had Kamala convincing Nakia to run for the Mosque Board and represent women.  The Gyro King will vote for Nakia if he is an exclusive vendor for events.  He is popular so I think of this as a plus.

She agrees if Nasaj puts up her flyer.  This is important for Nakia’s campaign, she has Bruno pass out flyers and goes with Kamala to convince The Mosque Bros, other groups, and most important, the IlluminAunties!  I like Nakia’s strategy with the logos for all of the groups.  She goes to talk to her uncle, Yusuf, but he wants to vote for his best friend, Rasheed.  Nakia mentions that Kamala is on her campaign, his daughter and his “other daughter.”  Zoe is bored waiting for Agent Cleary is fan of her Tik Tok videos and then hints that she was attacked by the “enhanced individual.”  Zoe says she saved her life and then brings up that she had seen the mystery girl.  This gets the interest of Agent Deever then questions her about the girl, even bringing up the Latinx term.  Creepy scene.  Zoe stops talking.  They are going to search every area (except high schools?) while the FBI is also on the case.

Agent Cleary warns her to be respectful.  Night, Kamala is sitting with the IlluminAunties and asks about Aisha, the aunties bring up she had affairs and killed a man during Partition.  Idle gossip.  A boy, Hameed (Ishan Gandhi), is hanging on the top of a mosque tower taking selfies.  Then, he falls and is just able to hold onto a curtain!  The rest of the celebration hear his screams.  It’s Ms. Marvel time!   Kamala changes into her costume, Bruno covers for her saying she went home, and the crowd points out Night Light!  I guess Damage Control will know where to search.  Kamala tries to encourage the boy as she climbs around the dome.  He says he likes ice cream pizza that gets Nasaj’s interest!  Kamala starts walking on the crystal discs.  Hameed starts to fall and Kamala tries to catch him.  She generates a large disc that they both land on.  Kamala leaps off the disc to do a superhero pose.  This blows up on social media.

“With great powers”, Kamala, remember the saying.  She reaches out for the boy, her bangle glows, and she sees a strange woman reaching out!  Hameed starts to fall, Kamala forms discs to slow his descent, but crashes into a car roof.  Sheikh Abdullah checks on him.  Kamala runs away at her feat that injured Hameed.  She reaches an alley, but is discovered by drones, and Damage Control with Agent Deever.  Shooting at a super powered suspect is not good.  Kamala disc runs over their head, the disc is blasted, and Kamala ends up injured on the street.  This is when Kamran drives up and speeds her away.  In the back is Kamran’s mother, Najma (Nimra Bucha)!  The involvement of Damage Control, interest in this superpowered girl, doesn’t this get the attention of The Avengers like Hawkeye or S.W.O.R.D.?  Ms. Marvel deals with an imperfect superhero who is still discovering her powers, caught between her interest in the new boy, and helping out her friend!

What’s In (The) Store - Stuart Ng Books!

Today is the 25th Anniversary Storewide Sale at Stuart Ng Books!  I was fascinated by their booth at WonderCon, so the sale and temptation of the art book selection, brought me there today.  The store is located in Torrance, 20655 S. Western Ave., it is but closed at this time.  There is still time until midnight to get the discount at www.stuartngbooks.com!  I have looked through the website, but always find it best to go through shelves and see what is interesting.  There are many signed items including the latest The Art of Lightyear book.  It is a wonderland of some art supplies, art books, references and techniques.  Many artists visit the store from animation studios, comic books, and others!  I saw autographed books, sketchbooks, and there are prints and posters.

Sketchbooks and paintings at Stuart Ng Books!, author’s photo.

A table had the latest book, I saw The Art of Haddon Sundblom, this is an good girl pin-up artist, mentor to Gil Elvgren, one of my favorite artists!  He also created the image we know today of Santa Claus for The Coca-Cola Company!  I found this out when I went to the former World of Coca-Cola in Las Vegas, now just a store.  To its left is a turnstile of Golden Books an hardback books for kids.  So many books of artists I’ve seen the artwork, Robert McGinnis, his covers can be seen with the Titan Comics issues of Gun Honey.  If you are not familiar with the artists, it’s time to just check out books on them at Stuart Ng Books.  This aisles continues with superhero books and then animation like Disney art books.

Mandalorian pendants, a Cthulhu statue, and sketchbooks!, photo by the author.

On the near wall, has tables of sketchbooks, artgerm, Terry Dodson, Adam Hughes, and Tula Lotay, plus paintings mounted on the wall.  At the front of the middle aisle had Mythosaur pendants from The Mandalorian and Stephen Hickman’s Cthulhu statue.  Then filled with European art books in their original language, French like Moebius and Milo Manara, Italian, and then continues with English translated comic book trades and artbooks.  There are prints, fine books including artbooks and postcards of Eyvind Earle.  Against the far wall is the rare art books with glass cabinets with statues, not the usual comic book statues, but I also saw the model of the Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954).  The owner showed me around the store, all of the employees are helpful, and the customers are all art lovers.  This is items that are at all price levels.  A must for anyone who like animation, movies, artists, sketchbooks, artbooks, and more!
