Cloak and Dagger, “Lotus Eaters”, Review!

Last episode, “Funhouse Mirrors”, Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) discovers that he is part of the “Divine Pairing.”  He also works for his brother’s friend, Duane, and finds one of his workers, Kev (Tanner Ellis), runs drugs. Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt), tries to get close to Mina, the daughter of one of her father’s associates, and she learns about both of them before Mina catches on.  She follows Mina (Hess Ally Maki) to the hospital where her father, Ivan (Tim Kang), is catatonic.  Tandy uses her powers to reveal his hopes, but finds nothing. Detective O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) has teamed up Connors (J.D. Evermore), the police officer who killed Tyrone’s brother, and they chase after Tyrone, Kev, and Duane who reveals that he saw his brother’s death.  Tyrone overhears Connors planning to kill O’Reilly.  She shoots Duane and Connors chases after Tyrone, but his powers enable him to escape to the church.  Tandy finds him there.

The Lotus Eaters of the title is from Greek mythology, eating the fruit of the lotus makes people forget, in this case, they have to break free from it’s spell.  This episode begins we get an Easy Bake oven with a cookie finished by a young Mina (Hannah Hardin) for her father.  In a bag, he takes away the cookie, and flies on helicopter to the oil platform.  He finds out the conductive shielding tiles did not arrive.  He stomps over to see Nathan Bowen (Andy Dylan).  On his desk, takes out the cookie from the bag, the control room is empty.  An alarm goes off and workers scramble.  We see Ivan in his hospital room, mumbling the song from the scene.  In the church, Tyrone goes over the death of Duane with Tandy.  She tells him about the survivor, Ivan, in the hospital.  She brings him to the hospital and the catatonic Ivan Hess (Tim Kang) in his hospital bed.  Tandy wants to help him since he is the only person who knows what happened.  They both reach to touch his hands, they emerged in a forest, The Door in the tree is an industrial door.  Tyrone reaches out and his cloak powers shift them inside the rig.  A rig worker swings an ax and Tandy stabs him with her Light Dagger.  Ivan is surprised to see them. This mind exploration works better than any X-Men movie or show.

Tandy says his name, but he doesn’t know who he is, a phone rings and he slams it down.  He watches a baseball game on a map and Tandy realizes that the rig will explode and everything will repeat.  They need to shut off the Kill Switch and the valves in the Core Room.  Tandy and Tyrone race out of the room and find the possessed workers attack them.  They use their powers to take out two of them.  More workers surround them and then it repeats Groundhog Day-style.  They are back in the office with Ivan, he takes them into another room with klaxons going off, he says the energy has turned the workers into what he calls Terrors.  They kneel as a Terror worker with a burned face, Ivan calls Mr. Flambe,  hunts for them.  He goes back to putting up the blueprint and drawing the baseball diamond.  Tyrone tries to remind him of his daughter and Nathan Bowen.  He realizes that Bowen is the person making the phone call. This flashes to Tandy as a girl hearing her father talking to Ivan.  The phone rings.  Tandy reaches for it to listen and talks to her daddy.  Some emotion there!

Tandy hears the voice of her father.  She says she misses him before the explosion.  Tyrone is worried about the situation.  Tandy just stares at the phone.  Tyrone uses his power to shift to the Core Room and sees workers scrambling to fix the problem.  A blast turns them into Terrors, Tyrone tries to turn the valve, but the workers surround him.  Tandy picks up the phone and talks with her father as Tyrone fights with the Terrors using a pipe, he shifts away from a worker’s ax, starting to turn the valves and there is the explosion again.  He tells them that he did everything, but it didn’t work.  Tyrone wants Tandy that they should get back to the Real World.  They both agree to release Ivan’s hand and Tyrone shifts back, but finds Tandy is still catatonic.  He returns and finds Tandy sitting and throwing cards.  Tandy throws her Light Dagger at a Terror.  Tyrone realizes that she may have been down in Ivan’s mind for some time.  The twists are great!  Tandy speaks to her father and Tyrone hangs up the phone.  He argues with her and she just realizes that his name is Tyrone.  She says her life was horrible.  Tyrone says he is she has one friend, him.  The first explosion goes off.

She thinks that she will always have her father.  They see Ivan and he steps out.  Tandy says she stopped counting the number of times at two hundred.  She says if the situation was reversed, if he could talk to Bobby, forgetting his brother’s name is what she goes through all the time.  Tandy throws her Light Dagger, but Tyrone shifts away.  He gives her the hard truth about her lying, drug use, and if she told that to her father.  Ivan steps out again and Tyrone promises to leave if she asks her father a question.  A question only he would know.  The phone rings.  Tandy asks her father about who is in the back of his car.  He says no one.  She cries.  The emotion in this show is strong.  The explosion whites out as Tandy says she misses her father.  The Divine Pair have to work together to free Ivan.  Tandy is able to jog Ivan’s memory in his catatonic state reminding him of his daughter, telling him from a daughter’s point of view; the secret ingredient in her cookie, cardamon.  Tyrone realizes only he can hit the Kill Switch and turn the valves.  The two working together with their powers is awesome!  They also get a bonding moment at the end of the episode.
