Venom Review!

This film is intriguing since it plods along slowly at the beginning trying to focus on Eddie Brock, then starts to roll when the symbiote attaches to him.  Then, it becomes very much like Upgrade, which had a voice inside the protagonist and forcing him to do evil acts.  It shifts into Incredible Hulk (2008) where two CG creatures battle it out.  The end result does keep the movie going without Spider-Man.  The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer who also directed Zombieland (2009).  Here the film suffers from pacing and CG that makes the symbiotes look like black Nickelodeon slime.  Venom has a story by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg with a screenplay by the writers and Kelly Marcel and Will Beall.  Of course, the character was previously played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3 (2007).

The character was created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988). They are given a quick credit at the end rather than a full credit.  The film is based on the 1993 Venom: Lethal Protector series which had Eddie Brock move to San Francisco.  This was by David Michelinie and art by Mark Bailey and Ron Lim.  Also, Planet of the Symbiote 1995 storyline which had Eddie separating from Venom and the threat of a symbiote invasion.  This was by the team of David Michelinie and art by Ralph Cabrera, Joe St. Pierre, Kyle Hotz, Darick Robertson, and Steve Lightle.  Besides Michelinie and McFarlane, these other creators are not given screen credit.

The movie begins with the descent of a shuttle which is tracked at the headquarters of the Life Foundation. Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed, is concerned for the safety of it’s cargo.  He of course has been in some great films, I took notice of him in Centurion (2010), and of course Rogue One (2016).  His motivation is confusing, he is worried about humans destroying the world, so he wants to achieve symbiosis with the symbiote for what reason?  Where did the symbioses come from?, in the comics they originate from the planet Klyntar, it is never clear in the movie. What is dramatic about the film is the score by Ludwing Goransson who also scored Black Panther

The shuttle picked up the symbiotes on Klyntar or the symbioses were traveling to Earth and taken in the shuttle in transit?  Something occurs which causes the shuttle to crash into Malaysia.  The Life Foundation recovery team brings three symbioses in cases.  So the symbiotes were found in cases or trapped there?  An astronaut, Jameson (Chris O’Hara) is found to have recovered from the crash and he passes the symbiote to a paramedic (Michelle Lee). The astronaut hints at John Jameson, the son of J. Jonah Jameson, introduced in comics and played by Daniel Gillies in Spider-Man 2 (2004).  The paramedic uses her symbiote powers to escape the ambulance and wanders the roads of Malaysia.  It shifts to six months later in San Francisco.

We have the apartment of Eddie Brock played by Tom Hardy.  He of course has played in the superhero universe playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and had the lead role in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).  Hardy is also listed as executive producer.  Eddie is wakened by his girlfriend, Anne Weying, played by Michelle Williams.  This is her first superhero film, but has been in genre pictures like Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).  A great actress, but a standard part, the girlfriend who has a new boyfriend, but it is really the original boyfriend that we are following.  She has moments especially for Venom fans.  Her character was introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #375 (1993). Anne is a lawyer for the Life Foundation.

Eddie shows kindness to a homeless woman, Maria (Melora Walters), and visits the store of Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu).  She is shaken down for protection money by a gunman and Eddie can only helplessly watch.  Eddie rides his motorcycle through the streets of San Francisco.  We see clips of Eddie’s reporting for The Eddie Brock Show.  He has a friendly conversation with the guard, Richard (Emilio Rivera), so we get Eddie is a nice guy. Eddie meets with his boss who is a kinda J Jonah Jameson.  His assignment is to interview Carlton Drake.  The Life Foundation headquarters nestled in the hills across the Golden Gate Bridge.  He is concerned with Dr. Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate) working with the symbiotes.  Slate has some interesting voice work in her c.v. including Harley Quinn in The Lego Batman Movie (2017).  Her character is basically the scientist who has doubts about the course of her project.

Eddie meets Anne for a dinner date.  Afterwards, Eddie goes to Anne’s laptop to go through her files when she is asleep.  Dr. Skirth monitors the symbiote as it attaches to a rabbit.  Later, Drake asks for human testing.  The interview happens with Eddie asks question using the information from Anne’s files.   The breach of trust results in Anne being fired, she hands her ring back to Eddie and he is fired from his job.  In Malaysia, the symbiote is transferred to an older woman (Vickie Eng) and then a young girl (Zeva DuVall) at the airport.  This is a lingering threat that Carlton lets slip.  Dr. Skirth contacts Eddie and brings him in with the threat to innocent people as part of the experiments.

Eddie finds that Maria is infected with the symbiote and he frees her.  There is  problem with the suitability of the host; the symbiotes were killing their hosts.  The reason behind why Venom chose Eddie Brock is interesting since it is not simple revenge. Eddie is able to escape the Life Foundation guards with Venom-enhanced powers.  This is when the movie starts moving, it takes some time to get there.  Venom's finishing move is to chomp the heads off victims, but it is bloodless with the PG-13 rating.  He is pursued by the security chief of the Life Foundation, Roland Treece (Scott Haze). I kept thinking that he and his men would be injected with the symbiotes like in the Swamp Thing (1982) movie, their ruthlessness would make them perfect candidates, but nope.

Eddie returns home starts having cravings wolfing down food, but he can’t hold it down.  Later, he tries to meet Anne at a dinner, she is on a date with her new boyfriend, Dr. Dan Lewis (Reid Scott). I understand his part, but all things being equal, he is a more stable partner than Eddie even before he was infected.  Eddie jumps into the lobster tank and begins to tear into one, he needs a living thing to eat.  It slowly becomes apparent that Venom is a parasite attached to Eddie.  Venom’s conversations with Eddie makes it interesting and fun.  Hardy also voices Venom so this is like his darker half speaking to him a la Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  This is almost beat for beat what happens in Upgrade

He takes on Treece and his men who try to use tasers on him, but Eddie goes full Venom extending his arms Mr. Fantastic-style to attack them.  Of course, he can’t use webbing because that is too much of a Spider-Man connection.  He goes to get examined by Dan Lewis who uses a MRI that makes him writhe in pain because it is the same frequency that weakens symbiotes.  A vulnerability, also extreme heat, that is similar to the comics. Eddie has to deal with Venom, take on Rio and take on the symbiote that makes it's way to San Francisco, Riot.  The mid-credit scene continues the story and the end credit is a scene from the next Spider-Man film.  The movie suffers from pacing and character development, but Hardy with the Venom voice over just makes it fresh enough to make it worth recommending.

Three Symbiotes out of Five!
