Doctor Who New Year’s Day Special, “Resolution”, Review!

Team Tardis has left the Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos and its first season.  Now we have the special which is the only Doctor Who we will have in 2019.  We see a misty 9th century battlefield, fallen soldiers, and we have three soldiers that have cut up and buried a body taken to Anuta Island, South Pacific, Siberia, Russia, and Yorkshire, England.  The last custodian failed taken by an arrow.  A narrator tells about the story of the Custodians.  The story of separating artifacts is mythological, we even have shades of it with the Horcrux of Voldemort in Harry Potter.  We have to scientists evacuating a find during New Year’s Day; Mitch (Nikesh Patel) and Lin (Charlotte Ritchie).  He asks her about the kiss they shared.  She uncovers something.  UV light causes the sample to glow.  The descendants of the Custodians see that what was buried has disappeared.  In the Tardis, the Doctor shows Team Tardis “cosmic fireworks” and they discuss their favorite of nineteen New Years.  I truly hope that those adventures are covered in novels, audio books, or comic books.  There is an alarm that the Doctor checks, something non-terrestrial in Sheffield!  Mitch finds something missing from the bag, Lin goes with torch to see a tentacled form on the wall, and reaches out to touch it!  We know what is the true form of the Daleks, but it needs the single, cyclopean eye.  Mitch hears the groaning of the Tardis, it appears, and Doctor scans him with her sonic screwdriver.  Lin tells them about the “squid thing.”  They suspect it went into the waters at the site, but the Doctor could easily scan for it with his sonic screwdriver.  Yaz sends off Lin and Mitch.  Lin sits in her car staring.

DOCTOR WHO -- “Resolution" -- MANDIP GILL, JODIE WHITTAKER, CHARLOTTE RITCHIE, NIKESH PATEL, TOSIN COLE, BRADLEY WALSH -- Sophie Mutevelian/BBC.

The Doctor takes the Tardis to Graham’s apartment, there is a ring at the doorbell, Ryan introduces everyone to his father, Aaron (Daniel Adegboyega).  The Doctor is angry that he wasn’t at Grace’s funeral.  Aaron is going to leave with his son, but Graham goes to talk to him.  Graham asks Aaron what is his intention with Ryan.  Aaron says he wants to be family.  Graham says that family is more than genetics, it is how time is spent with a family member.  Lin returns home and goes to the bathroom, the tentacled thing is attached to her back, and tries to control her.  In the Tardis, the Doctor has the sample analyzed, and tells Graham and Yaz that the DNA is Dalek!  Lin goes to her computer and under the Dalek’s control checks the weapons of the world.  The Doctor explains about the Daleks.  Yaz calls up Lin.  Lin is driving her car recklessly under the Dalek’s control.  Police car sirens are heard and Lin stops the car.  An officer checks on her and she tells him, “You are an enemy of the Daleks.”  A tentacle reaches out and pulls the officer into the car.  Her partner sees this and then screams when the tentacles appear around Lin.  She leaves in the police car with the two bodies to the side of the road.  This is an interesting appearance of the Doctor’s greatest enemy, in its primordial form, and the horror of the Dalek without the traditional metal shell and energy weapons.

At a restaurant, Aaron tries to sell a microwave oven, Ryan is not impressed.  His father is not saying the right words.  Ryan wants an apology.  Aaron tries to explain that he ran away because he was ashamed.  I absolutely love the focus on the drama of one of Team Tardis while a world threat is unfolding around them.  Mitch is talking on a cell phone while the Tardis lands and Yaz takes him into the Tardis.  He realizes that they are not from the Order of the Custodians.  At Graham’s apartment, Mitch shows them the books of the Custodians, and the Doctor realizes that the ultraviolet light revived the Dalek.  Mitch knows that Lin is in danger.  The Doctor uses Mitch’s phone to track Lin.  She finds that the Dalek is attached to Lin!  Ryan returns to the apartment and enters the Tardis.  The Tardis is shorted out and the Doctor determines that it might be a Recon Scout.  At MDZ, the police car arrives, Lin meets a man and takes his body to use his handprint to access reach into a storage area that has a gunstick, the weaponry of the armored Dalek.  Lin hears the Doctor’s voice and the Doctor confronts the Dalek with her giant microphone.  The Dalek laughs.  She activates a hologram of Lin and says, "Do that to my face.”  She tells Lin to fight and tells the Dalek that she delayed it long enough to reboot the Tardis systems!

DOCTOR WHO -- “Resolution” -- TOSIN COLE -- James Pardon/BBC.

Graham is surprised that the Tardis has left him with Aaron.  The Doctor uses the Tardis systems to track the Dalek, then uses UK security helpline.  She asks for Kate Stuart of U.N.I.T.   Kate is the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and first appeared in Doctor Who in the Eleventh Doctor episode “The Power of Three” (2012).  The operator says the U.N.I.T. was suspended!   The Doctor tells everyone that they are on their own. Graham shows Aaron a box of his stuff kept by Grace.  He delivers her message that she was proud of him.  Graham says he still has time.  Lin has reached a metal working factory.  Lin/Dalek tells the owner she will continue the work and kills him with the gunstick.  She works the forge to construct a new Dalek body!  Lin gets tired and the Dalek forces her to continue.  She throws herself into wooden crates.  Team Tardis has reached the factory.  The Doctor scans the body and knows he was killed from a Dalek weapon.  They hear Lin crying out.  The Doctor sees the mark on her neck.  Lin says that it’s still in the factory.  She has a little romantic part, a professional, plays a possessed, killer Dalek, then able to break from its control and survive!  Charlotte Ritchie is an exceptional guest star.  The Doctor has them take Lin to the Tardis and faces it alone.  The Doctor wanders the factory with her sonic screwdriver, there is an explosion, and out of it comes the Dalek!  It croaks, “Ex-ter-min-ate!” and she uses the sonic screwdriver to deactivate its weapons.  The Doctor tells the Dalek to scan her and she says, "I am the Doctor.  The Dalek enraged disables the sonic screwdriver and tries to blast her.  It threatens to summon the Dalek fleet and flies through the factory roof.

The Doctor updates the team, she gives a globe for Lin to take, she finds that the Dalek is flying towards military airspace!  Graham calls the Doctor and he tells Aaron to be prepared before the Tardis appears.  Yaz tells them to come in the Tardis.  The Tardis lands in the center of military forces.  A soldier says it’s an “unknown drone.”  The rifle shots ping off it’s metal surface.  The Dalek reveals missiles and the solder calls for a retreat.  A tank rolls up to the Dalek and fires a round, the Dalek sends a missile to destroy the tank.  Mitch explains that they can defeat it from the records left by the Custodians.  Aaron has an idea to use his microwave oven to destroy the Dalek.  The Doctor realizes it is headed to Global Communications Headquarters.  The Dalek crashes through the communication center and kills the officer there.  It manipulates the radar dishes.  The Doctor realizes that it has shut down all of the internet in the UK.  A family finds that instead of using the internet, they have to talk to each other  The Doctor is protected by the Tardis’ shield.  She gives it a final warning.  The Doctor gets reassurances from the others that she gave it a chance.  She deactivates the shield and runs drawing its fire.  They attach the microwave oven parts that melt the shell.  The Doctor scans with her sonic screwdriver and find that the signal wasn’t sent to the Dalek fleet.  The Dalek has attached to Aaron!  She promises to take it to the Dalek homeworld.  This ends with a hopeful message of the first day of the year saved by Team Tardis and their allies!  I’ve seen most of the Dalek episodes since “Genesis of the Daleks” (1975), their origin, and this stands above them all with not the standard pepper pot threat, but as horror, possessing people, and even the classic robot!  Still, the convergence of Aaron’s story and Ryan with the Dalek is brilliant!
