The cover by Tommy Lee Edwards is set in Oga’s Cantina with some interesting patrons except in the real Oga’s there is 100% less aliens, droids, and costumed characters. It features Doctor Aphra on the cover and she was introduced in Star Wars: Darth Vader #3 (2015). She is a young archeologist who is a criminal and somehow more clever than Darth Vader with her serial killer droids. It appears that Aphra is integral to the comic books and has met every character in them, but her importance is of course negligible since she is nowhere in the films and tv series. “The Betrayal of Kashyun” continues with Ethan Sacks and Will Sliney. We have the plucky group led by Kendoh to try to take the Sword of Kashyun from the Ithorian antiquities dealer, Dok-Ondar, and have arranged transport by Hondo Ohnaka. He is also working with Dok-Ondar. A First Order Star Destroyer moves from the planet Batuu. It sends out a shuttle which descends to the forests outside of Black Spire Outpost. Stormtroopers are in a fire fight while a stormtrooper unloads a tracked speeder bike. Two Resistance fighters are blasting at the stormtroopers. One is in a helmet like the heroes of the 80's cartoon series M.A.S.K.
The speeder bike stormtrooper cuts them off and blasts them. Important characters are not readily identified. He reports in that they are not Resistance fighters, but fugitives with Death Marks from General Hux. This shifts to the outside of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, this is exactly like the outside of the shop at Galaxy’s Edge. The female Jedi statue is very memorable. Dok-Ondar speaks to a statue, a tribute to his parents, nice story point which makes me want to see the statue in person. Hondo Ohnaka walks up talking about the threats against the merchant. He is brought inside his shop because there is a droid monitoring them. Kendoh and her gang watches them in hologram. Dok-Ondar discusses with Hondo that the two halves of the Sword of Kashyn are dangerous together. Kendoh mentions a “mysterious patron.” It is an unstable situation with something very dangerous and not knowing the players. Maybe it is a Jedi. Kendoh has the gang ready to get into action. Her henchman, Remex, goes aside to activate a device. A cam droid deactivates and behind Dok-Ondar and Hondo is a stuffed Wampa Ice Creature, which is something I didn’t see at Galaxy’s Edge.
Hondo wants his business partner to relate his story with Doctor Aphra. She is twirling a blaster as the assassin droids, the astromech-like Bee Tee, and Triple-Zero, the wanna-be protocol droid both in black colors that’s how we know they’re evil. Dok-Ondar has brought along some Shistavanen henchmen, the werewolf-like alien seen in the cantina. Dr. Aphra explains the Sword of Kashyn which is a Sith relic. They land on Moraband, the Sith homeworld that was seen in the “Sacrifice” (2014) episode of Clone Wars, the ship approaches a valley with hooded statues with swords next to a pyramid structure. Dr. Aphra in a breath mask appears with the wolfmen and Bee Tee to enter the temple. She senses a trap and “checks her boot” as one of the wolfmen activates a panel. It has a fiery energy to a statue (which wasn’t seen) smash the wolfman with a mace. Dr. Aphra destroys it. Dok-Ondar is on the ship when communications go out, it is a strange panel with Triple Zero’s behind, but he activates syringes from his fingers noticed by another wolfman. Dr. Aphra seems to have the upper hand, but Dok-Ondar is the patron and has the ship. Dok-Ondar seems more respectful of artifacts and able to stay on ahead of distrustful mercenaries. Still, there are further complications at Black Spire Outpost! We are near the conclusion of this series and most of the questions are answered in an issue with some good story developments!
