At the end of the pilot, Abby is talking to Alec and reveals that she killed her mother! I think this is under the supernatural influence of her father. Alec finds the sample is a biological accelerant. He has realized that boxes full of the accelerant were dropped in the swamp and goes to recover them. Someone is corrupting the swamp! Alec takes his boat and pulls out a box. He is shot twice by a mysterious figure and Alec drags himself into the swamp water before an explosion. The killer boats away, Alec gets to the muddy shore, wheezing in pain. The vines wrap themsleves around him and take Alec into the swamp. Abby boats over to the explosion to check on Alec. Vines toss Abby into the water and she swims over to the shore. Abby turns to see the vines twist and the muck-form of the Swamp Thing (Derek Mears) emerges from the water! Abby gets to the river bank and runs. Swamp Thing tries to follow, but his red eyes close, and he sleeps!

The Swamp wakens and sees a police car. Abby and police officer, Matt Cable, are searching the area of the explosion. The sheriff and Matt's mother, Lucilia Cable (Jennifer Beals), sets a search. Abby tries to explain what she saw and Matt says it must have been a bear. Young Susie suddeny wakens in her hospital bed and her actions are the same as Swamp Thing! At a cabin with a fire, Abby talks to her friend, Liz Remayne (Maria Sten). Checks on Susie and she fears for the person she connected to empathically. Avery Sutherland calls out his wife’s name, Maria is in the bed of her departed daughter, Shawna. Morning, Abby is startled awake by the nightmare of a zombie girl. She calls Harlan for an update about Susie. She finds Liz’s girlfriend, Margaux (Kelly Walker) before she heads to work. Liz is a reporter and Abby tells her about Alec’s lab. She drives over to the Sutherland Mansion to see Sutherland. He says he hasn’t seen her in fourteen years. Avery says he doesn’t blame Abby for his daughter’s death. Avery wants to keep his research private.
Blind fortune teller, Xanadu is reading cards when Maria Sutherland walks up. She feels the presence of Shawna, Xanadu touches Maria’s hand and falls screaming. Xanadu has sensed something “out there.” Harlan finds that Susie is missing from her hospital bed. Liz takes Abby to a video store, the clerk is Daniel Cassidy (Ian Ziering). Abby wants to see Alec’s room, Daniel does have Alec’s journal on his laptop, there is a Blue Devil logo on it. She plays Alec’s entry when he was fired by Avery. Abby sees Harlan’s message that Susie has left the hospital. At the Sutherland Mansion, scientists drive up, Jason (Kevin Durand) and Caroline Woodrue (Selena Anduze), an elderly couple leads them to his work in the backyard. Avery brings up Jason’s accelerant and the diseases that may be connected to it. Abby talks to Matt Cable in the hospital hallway. He gets a call that the girl may have gone to the docks. She has snuck aboard the game warden’s boat into the swamp. The game warden sees a light and catches two men about to drop the accelerant box. He is killed by Sutherland’s man.

The Swamp Thing pulls himself up from the water. Sheriff Lucilia is suspicious about Matt going with Abby. Matt admits his crush on Abby. The killer throws the wardn’s body into the water and sees Susie run away. He picks up a machete. The Swamp Thing turns. He hears the killer yelling after Susie. Abby finds the police boat and she finds the warden on the boat and still alive. Susie is in the water under a cabin as the killer moves closer. The machete strikes through the floor of the cabin. Susie enters the cabin, but the killer is distracted by teh Swamp Thing that grabs his throat. He tries to stab The Swamp Thing who has his wounds healed. The vines skewer the killer and pulls him back until he is silent. The Swamp Thing looks up at Susie. Abby finds Susie, but she sees the Swamp Thing standing next to her. Susie’s empathy with the Swamp Thing makes me think of The Crow. She tells Abby that the creature’s name is Alec! I like the moodiness, touches of horror, and the pacing of this episode.
Four Vines out of Five!
