Wonder Woman #780 Review!

Wonder Woman #780 has Diana returning to Prime Earth after traveling through the Afterworlds!  “Where the Heart Is” is by Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan working with the art team of Travis Moore and Steve Pugh.  The regular cover has Wonder Woman posing in front of the Earth!  It opens with the Hall of Justice, this was the headquarters of the Super Friends cartoon, and introduced recently in comics with Justice League of America #7 (2007).  The Martian Manhnter pauses from his monitoring duty to open a bag of cookies, he usually prefers Oreos, and gets the opening of a portal.  A splash page has the return of Wonder Woman with the surprised face of J’onn J’onzz.  At the conference room, Diana meets with Superman and Batman. She hugs Superman and gets a handshake from the Dark Knight. Batman pauses at the door before heading to Gotham, it is slams on him with the arrival of Black Canary, LOL!  Dinah hugs Diana.  Then, a series of panels has her encounters with other Leaguers; Hawkgirl, Black Adam, Green Arrow, and the rest of the team.

She later talks with Batman and Superman when Dr. Fate arrives requesting Diana to help Justice League Dark deal with a problem in Atlantis.  He forms an ankh portal.   She is stopped by her mother, Hippolyta, who is currently in the Justice League.  Hippolyta’s uniform is white with gold edges and a purple cloak.  Diana surprises her mother by giving her a hug.  Hippolyta shed a single tear.  It was difficult to see her daughter sacrifice herself for the multiverse.  Wonder Woman was reduced to clay at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths.  It is a nice mother daughter moment.  Still, Hippolyta wants Diana to rest.  Wonder Woman decides to return to Themyiscra and flies over the ocen.  A boat filled with Turkish refugees is starting to tip over.  Very topical.  There should be more superhero comics with touches of real world problems, touches, not social commentary.

Diana carries the refugees back to the boat and then dives into the water.  She is pulling a Superman feat, lifting the boat and flying it to shore!  A splash page has Wonder Woman lifting the boat as aid workers are amazed.  Beautiful art by Travis Moore!  There is a series of panels, cell phone footage, of Wonder Woman helping the refugees. She should be helped by the aid workers.  Nice framing device. Then, we get a splash page of Wonder Woman flying with seagulls around her.  I like when comics are filled with pages that would make great posters!  We get a change in setting, “Greenway Apartments, Washington D.C.”, Steve Trevor is checking his mail.  He is stunned to see the Daily Planet headline, “Wonder Woman is Back!”  There were a number of faux Daily Planet papers on Superman IRL, how about one for Wonder Woman?  At “Gateway City Megamall”, the town is a coastal city in California that was a former base for Wonder Woman.

At the food court, Bat Burgers?, not Big Belly Burgers, (the DC Universe’s favorite fast food chain?), there is Donna Troy and Cassie Sandmark.  Donna is the first Wonder Girl, currently in the live action Titans show, played by Conor Leslie.  Cassie was the next Wonder Girl and she was in the Young Justice animated show.  They are watching the news on several screens and are happy with the news as is the rest of the food court. At the “Holliday Clubhouse”, the biker girls celerate the news of Wonder Woman’s return.  The Holliday Girls first apperared in Sensation Comics #2 (1942)!  The Prime Earth version seems interesting, I would like to see mre on them.  Then, we get the “Bana-Mighdall Stronghold” in Qurac.  These Amazons were introduced in Wonder Woman #29 (1989).  They were found in Egypt, but it looks like change to the DC Middle-East country.  The warrior Artemis, from Wonder Woman #90 (1994), is part of that tribe. She is told of the return of Diana and Artemis tells the Amazon to contact Queen Faruka.

At Themyscira, Nubia delivers the news to all of the Amazons.  Then, we get “Bar Pirata, Sao Paulo”, where Yara Flor leaves a gambling table to look outside.  Yara is of course, the latest Wonder Girl from Future State: Wonder Woman.  Edgar Cizko hears the Wonder Woman news, she dealt with him in Valhalla during “Afterworlds”, is speaking on the phone with a mysterious person.  Wonder Woman hovers above the cheering Amazons.  She congradulates Queen Nubia. There is dancing, music, and Kangas!  They are just an absurd, fun creation from Sensation Comics #6 (1942), canon in the DC now!  They head to Hippolyta’s room and Queen Nubia shows her a key entrusted to her. Moore’s depiction of Diana looks like a real person, maybe her smile gives shades of Lynda Carter?, the Bronze Age version never looked like a person.  They reach into a chest and Diana pulls out the Lasso of Truth!  Wonder Girl #1 had the conflict of the different Wonder Women, but now there is unity between them.  There is a place for all of the Wonder Women and Wonder Woman #780 has a celebration of new and old characters just in time for Wonder Woman Day!

Five Lassos of Truth out of Five!
