Brzrkr #6 Review!

Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney’s Brzrkr has come to the mid-point of the series where his immortal memories are returning and now he is unleashed!  The cover by Lee Garbett has B. With black armor and bandaged arms with red hands reaching out from him against what looks like a swarm of blood or smoke behind him!  A closeup of Brzrkr’s face as he is monitored in the tank, he starts growling, and then his eyes flare blue!  This moves to his mission in the Ukraine, a helicopter is over the target area.  He is debriefed about insurgents and is needed to cover the entrance of a museum.

B. leaps out of the helicopter, Captain America-style.  The team leader, Jim (his name is revealed near the end of the comic), is under heavy fire as he collects a palm-sized goldlocket into a bag.  A military supporting character is needed in this series, he could just give the missions, and may take part in some of them.  It is too disconnected having countless, fellow soldiers die on missions nameless and unknown.  He shoots his way out and then turns in a gasping close-up. Brzrkr is lifting up the side of a tank as it fires, his blazing blue eyes turn, as a rpg is launched, he catches it and throws it at the tank to destroy it.  Jim, is carrying b’s broken and bloody body into the helicopter and takes off from the city.

Artillery fires from the ground.  The combat leader pulls out B. and leaps out of the helicopter.  Vertical panels show their descent.  Very nice design elements with the artwork.  Jim turns Brzrkr to bear the brunt of the fall into a forest!  There is a rain of body parts, gruesome, at the crash site, Jim finds a branch has pierced his waist.  He reports to B. that they have no rescue.  The team leader has bound his wounds and fashions a crutch from branches, then they start walking.  They reach a rusty boat and b. tells team leader not to contact the base.  He thinks back to Winter in 800 A.D. with a Viking ship lashed in the dark seas.  It sinks and he manages to swim to shore in the Spring!

B. starts walking and says he remembers the mountains, from his childhood?  At night, he finds calendula, the marigold flower, it helps to heal wounds.  Jim asks Brzrkr questions that of course he is not ready to answer and instead takes first watch.  Morning, the soldier wakes up and finds that B. has almost healed, he still has patchy hair.  In a series of vertical page long vertical panels, we see the day turn to night as they walk until Brzrkr has to assist Jim.  In the moonlight, wolves have gathered, B. walks towards them, tears into one wolf’s neck with his teeth, and the others flee.  At the campfire, the soldier asks Brzrkr why he chose to fight for them.

He says he punches trees, the protocols help, but he is uncomfortable with peace.  In Roman times, he is awarded a medal in his legionnaire armor.  We get scenes of war against hordes of soldiers, a campaign against an army using elephants, possibly Carthage, and in feudal Japan. He takes up the unconscious Jim and walks talking to him about his father and mother.  B. wants to find his father. They reach snowy mountains.  They may find rescue, but the mysterious organization has plans for b. that involve the locket!  Brzrkr continues with violent action, we getting closer to what he wants, and the organization that tries to control him!

Four Protocols out of Five!
