Superman and Lois, “What Lies Beneath”, Review!

Last season, Superman, Lois, and their twin sons, Jordan and Jonathan, have moved to Smallville.  Superman at first fights Captain Luthor, but it is revealed that he is really John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks)!  He came from another Earth, Earth TUD22, dominated by Superman!  Morgan Edge, head of Edge Industries, had an interest in the Shuster Mines and his assistant, Leslie Larr (Stacey Farber) helped with his plan.  It was revealed that Edge was really Tal-Rho, Superman’s half-brother!  His plan was to use X-Kryptonite from the mines to put Kryptonian minds into humans!  They are defeated, General Sam Lane (Dylan Walsh) retires, and it all ends with a crash outside the farmhouse, and we find John Henry Irons’ daughter, Natalie (Tayler Buck)!  The episode begins with Natalie hugging her father and then sees her mother, Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch), on the other Earth!

The Kents are silent as John Henry takes Natalie away to explain.  Lois walks away from her family!

It shifts to “Three Months Later”, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) checks on Lois working at her desk.  Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) walks to the kitchen and then Jordan (Alex Garfin) comes down stairs with heavy cologne.  Clark wonders about Natalie’s first day at school.  Lois doesn’t want to talk about the situation.  Downtown Smallville, kids are excited about Superman.  Kyle Chandler (Erik Valdez) and Lana Lang Chandler (Emmanuelle Chriqui) are sitting on the back of his truck, he doesn’t like the commericalization of Superman merch.  The bus pulls up and they are excited to see their daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarette), return from camp.  At the Smallville Gazette, Chrissy Beppo (Sofia Hasmik) interviews a job applicant, Michael, and Lois quickly sees him out.  Chrissy is frustrated that Lois has turned down all of the applicants for a month.

At the Chandler home, Lana gets a box of mayor candidate Daniel Hart t-shirts, Jordan uses super hearing to eavesdrop on Sarah whose busy with her mother’s campaign.  The Smallville High football game is practicing with Jonathan on the sideline.  Later, as Clark drives up to the farm, Jonathan is frustrated and gets advice from his new girlfriend, Candace (Samantha Di Francesco).  The actress has also appeared in a 2020 episode of Batwoman.  Clark hears an emergency with a submarine.   Superman flies over the stormy seas in North Korea, he x-rays the sub, but a sonic blast sends him spinning into the water!  The sub is in danger, the ringing stops, and Superman moves to save the day.  The sinking has stopped, and awesome scene, Superman lifts the submarine from the ocean!

The captain turns the periscope and sees Superman telling the crew, “Superman saved us!”  Superman hears another distress signal and flies away.  Morning in Metropolis, John Henry in his RV goes over the cover story for Natalie.  Lois returns home and bursts into Jonathan topless in his room with Candace.  Lois gets mad at her son.  At the Department of Defense, Lieutenant Anderson (Ian Bohen) is on the phone, when Superman arrives, he tells him that he knew all about Superman who stays out of policital situations.  Bohen is currently in the Yellowstone show and like Hoechlin was also in the Teen Wolf (2011-2017) series.  Superman hears Lois saying she wants him home.  Lois sends Jonathan to his home and explains the situation to her husband.  Clark trusts his sons, but Lois doesn’t like how he is taking things lightly.

He asks if it is about Natalie and gets a sharp remark before she sends him to Lana’s house without her!  A shift from the Lois we know, understanding, working family, job, and Superman’s problems.  It may be that the situation with Natalie is not resolved, technically.  Sarah is blindfolded as Jordan uses his heat vision.  He has lit candles on the pond above the bridge they are on.  Sarah likes the surprise, but says she has to head home.  At Lana’s house, Daniel Hart (Nathan Witte) deals with the angry coach who is covered by Lana.  Kyle is stunned and goes to the kitchen meeting Clark.  He gives advice about Lois and their argument.  At night, John Henry is waiting for Natalie, when she suddenly walks up.  She is upset about her friend, Anika didn’t recognize her.  Natalie is angry at the situation and wishes she were dead.  A sad moment.  This is the Army brat situation, moving to another part of the world, and not recognizing anyone.

Jordan walks in and Lois starts questioning him, but her son only wants to go to his room.  Lois looks sorrowful, disconnecting from her son.  At the Kent house, Jordan checks on his brother, and Jonathan admits they are going to get a talk from their father.  After the party, Clark talks to Lana, concerned about Kyle.  He explains the situation which is exactly like what is happening with Lois.  There is a shudder detected by Clark and Lana.  Sarah has felt a tremor as Kyle works on his car.  Is there something to Sarah, Kyle didn't feel it, she also felt ill at the bridge.  Her father realizes that Jordan was putting too much on her.  Kyle has a home spun wisdom, but his job as firefighter would probably be needed later.  Clark returns and Lois explains she was angry at Jordan and then admits she felt nothing when Natalie called her mother.  Lois says this was the same as her mother who had abandoned Lois as a child.  I love this real world situation.

Clark hugs her and then hears the disttress signal seeing a crack in the window.  He warns Lois about the earthquake and then flies to see the chaos in Smallville.  The water tower breaks and Superman flies in to lift it up and freeze breaths the rupture.  Explosions at the mine, a dump truck is about to fall, but is flown to safety by Superman.  He uses his x-ray vision to see a person punching the rocky walls, it is a Kryptonian from the House of El?  Superman is struck by the sonic distortion and flies away, he checks the miners and then flies to the sky.  The family is cleaning up the damage from the earthquake.  Lois calls John Henry.  Lt. Anderson and the super duo is met by Superman.  He says they are from the school, trained by the DoD, he says that he offered him to join the “team.”

Superman warns Lt. Anderson to not to use the symbol on their suits.  The school that Anderson mentioned was hinted at last season, a school student, Tag, escaped from it in “Haywire.”  The scene with Lois and Natalie is a superhero reflection of the abandoned parent trying to reconcile with the child.  This is what makes the show great, very human, understandable scene missing from many superhero series and movies.  Natalie may be from another world, like Kal-El, but she is as much Lois' daughter as Clark Kent was the son of Jonathan and Martha Kent.  General Lane probably wouldn’t want Kryptonians to be used for any purpose.  It could be somehow connected to Leslie Larr.  Plus, the earthquakes are all connected to something underground!  Superman and Lois excels with emotional, family moments and bringing in some incredible, comic book story points!
