Ms. Marvel, "Time and Again", has an extended flashback that is almost a different show, but returns back in time. Re:run - “Seeing Red” conclusion - as Kamala and Kareem are at the bonfire, back at the house, Muneeba fusses off organizing things that are not her things in place that is not her house! She asks about all of the toffee boxes and her mother says it was meant for her, since toffee was her favorite as a child. Muneeba has Nani sit as she tries to massage her aching leg. She asks Nani if she will live with them in America. Muneeba explains it is because of her wild theories that her father left and she was isolated by the neighborhood. Nani was just trying to share, but Muneeba shares she just needed a mother. This confession seems like it took a long time. Kamala returns to the house, Muneeba is at the kitchen table, see offers her daughter a toffee. The next day, Waleed watches as Kamala activates her powers.
She forms crystal armor. Then, Waleed gives her a blue-green vest which he says has history to it, Kareem says she is a Red Dagger. Suddenly, from the window, figures drop down, it is Najima and the ClanDestine! Kareem takes away Kamala and activates steam to cover their escape as Waleed fights with the ClanDestine. They take the three-wheeled taxi cab, but the ClanDestine are behind them with a stolen truck. No alarm for the break in and no police in Pakistan? The truck has spun the cab against its front. A family up ahead is trying to start a motorcycle. Kamala forms a crystal ramp protecting them. Then, she uses her crystal foot to push them to the side and then send the truck flying to the side of the ramp. There is the other taxicab with ClanDestine. Kareem detaches the back of the cab with Waleed and rides with Kamala on the one wheel!
Two cars end up facing each other so Kareem and Kamala are sent into the street! Saleem chases after them, but Kamala was hiding in a truck, and then tries to drive putting it in reverse throwing off crates of bottles! Kareem is surrouded by the ClanDestine and starts to run. Saleem has his whip out, but is struck by the truck! Kamala and Kareem run pursued by Saleem. Waleed has reached an upper floor with Najima behind him. He throws his daggers and makes a leap across a street to catch hold of them! Najima leaps onto the balcony. Waleed sees the chase below and throws his daggers at Saleem. Najima then stabs him and lets his body fall. Kareem takes an explosive bottle and throws it into a pot. This explodes searing Najima. They end up cornered, Kamala really doesn’t use her powers in the chase, which is strange since she took on all of the ClanDestine alone for a time.
Kareem fights Aadam with his gold club and Najima slashes him. Kamala has to use her shield as Fariha forces her spear down. Najima finds that Aadam has died from Kareem’s dagger. She takes her weapon and strikes the bangle sending white waves out. Kamala finds herself on train tracks during the Partition. She climbs up to a train to see the crowds and trains about to leave! We begin “Time and Again” with a newsreel about the Partition separating India and Pakistan. The superhero lost in time after a battle is similar to what happened to Hiro Nakayama at the Heroes finale. The newsreel ends and we get “British Occupied India, 1942”, a woman is running, it is Aisha from a soldier. She turns and throws a dagger that kills him. At a village, a man (Fawad Khan) is speaking about bringing all of India together with Gandhi’s movement. Aisha watches him speak, a crowd cheers, but she also notices that British soldiers have arrived and disperses the crowd.
Later, Aisha is sleeping on the ground when she is prodded by a cane. It is of course the speaker who tells her about his roses she was sleeping on. He seems very kind and offers her to stay at his cottage. This takes well into the night and the man offers her paratha. He asks questions as she eats. The man keeps trying until Aisha introduces herself. He says his name is Hasan. Later, we see she has a rose in her hair, Aisha thanks Hasan, we see she is pregnant and has the bangle. Hasan watches Aisha sing a lullaby to their baby. A man, Rohan, has brought them food and drink, Hasan doesn’t want the charity when everyone doesn’t buy his flowers because he is Muslim. Aisha goes out with a lantern to meet with Najima who has searched for years for her, they hug, and Najima asks if she wants to go home. I’m sensing this is an Aquaman situation with the woman from another world starting a new life with this place. Aisha says the bangle is hidden and Najima gives her until sundown to find it.
The next day, Aisha urges Hasan for them to leave, she gives the bangle to her daughter, Sana (Zion Usman), Nani in the future. A long line of people carry torches in the night. It is at this point, 25 mins. into the episode, that I think the narrative thread is lost. Usually the flashbacks are 5-10 mins., but this one is like the makers have lost interest in Kamala Khan, her New Jersey family, and friends. I like the story of Aisha and Rohan, but it really needs to be compressed to a few moments. Rohan wants to know about the woman he had seen Aisha with last night. She reveals the bangle and Aisha wants Rohan to get Sana to the train. We see the crowded Karachi Station, in the confusion, Aisha gives Sana to Rohan because of the danger. Aisha moves through the crowd and confronts Najima. She is stabbed by Najima who goes looking for the bangle. On board the train, Hasan has lost Sana who has gone looking for her mother.
Aisha holds the photo of the family, her eyes glare purple, and the bracelet activates. This returns to Kamala, finally, who manages to find Aisha lying down. Aisha wants her to take Sana to the train and gives her the photograph. Kamala picks up the crying Sana. Hasan cries out for his daughter. Kamala forms crystal platforms for Sana. She is knocked over and the platform turns to tiny stars! Hasan sees the stars and takes his daughter to the train. The bangle glows again and turns to light, Kamala is back, everyone is on the ground. They all look up to see the white portal, the Veil! The next morning, Muneeba is worried that Kamala is not answering her phone. Owais mentions the Find My Phone feature and Muneeba is surprised she has just learned about it. Fariha is excited to see the Veil and return home. She reaches out for it is turned to purple crystal which shatters, showing her skeleton, which crumbles apart! The Veil is out of control, Kamala tries to use her powers to contain it, but it is too powerful! This episode of Ms. Marvel strays from its roots to discover Kamala’s heritage, so a return is more of a b plot.
