I Am Groot Review!

I Am Groot gives us the adventures of Baby Groot  in a series of animated shorts!  The series is created by Kirsten Lepore whom is known for writing and directing “Bad Jubies” (2016), the episode of Adventure Time.  The tree-like character first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 (1960) as one of the alien conquerors of the Earth defeated by a scientist who unleashed a swarm of termites.  Comic creators, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, with artists Tom Raney and Wellington Alves formed the Guardians of the Galaxy in the cosmic event, Annihilation: Conquest #6 (2008).  This gorup was in the Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) film where Groot sacrificed himself to save the others on Xandar.   Still, we found at the end that he survived in a new form, Baby Groot!  He became Teen Groot in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).  It is streaming on Disney+ since August 10th!

There are five episodes in this series.  The first of the 5 min. Shorts begins with “Groot’s First Steps.”  We get the Marvel Studios logo, but at a different speed, already funny.   Next, there is Baby Groot in his pot by a window on the M-ship dubbed by Peter Quill as the Milano. He wakes up and is prepared by spherical robots.  He has the roundish, brown eyes like a child and moss-like hair on his pompador-like ridge.  Baby Groot says his classic line, “I Am Groot” (voiced by Vin Diesel) which apparently translates to words that his fellow Guardian, Rocket Raccoon, only knows.  He is eating corn puffs when his pot cracks!  He is taken away by a robot and then replaced by an alien bonsai tree.  The robots spay and buff this tree and even Groot’s cloth blanket is taken away for the bonsai!

Baby Groot lashes out in jealousy, but this has a way of bouncing back.  He does have limbs that stretch out and snap off to help him move around.  The playful, electronic music is by Daniele Luppi who also provided the music for the comedy, Assassination of a High School President (2008).  Baby Groot is mischevious, but also manages to learn how to walk like a baby!  The next episode is “Groot: The Little Guy”  where we hear chittering sounds from a fuzzy creature on a desert planet.  Baby Groot now mobile has reached a tree stump and begins putting together some twigs.  We get the “5 Minutes Later” and Groot has assembled a tower also a wind chime!  The tower is shaken, then we see a pinkish tongue that belongs to the Vyloo seen in a container in the attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!  They have the fuzzy, white bodies, roundy black eyes like a baby bird with a long snout.

This one has a purplish mohawk and flicks its purple tongue until Baby Groot falls.   The Vyloo takes the tower as a nest, but is swiped away by a predator!  Groot starts yelling and stomping around, we get some minutes, with Baby Groot continuing to yell, temper tantrum!   He lifts up a rock and sees tiny, bluish creatures with four black eyes.  Studio Ghibli-type creatures called Grunds.  Baby Groot towers over them like the Twilight Zone episode, “The Little People” (1962).  His “I Am Groot” greeting blows them away like little jelly beans!  The lil’ aliens are intimidated by the massive Groot, but have their own way of dealing with threats!  The episodes have fun designs, a Baby Groot that is destructive, but in his own way, helpful.  We also have an appearance by Rocket Raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper.  Fun corners of the Guardians of the Galaxy worlds with cute aliens.  All of the I Am Groot shorts are amusing, fun shorts with a fan favorite.
