Star Wars: Obi-Wan #4 Review!

Star Wars: Obi-Wan continues with a fourth issue tackling some heavy war drama during the Clone Wars!  We continue with the missing parts of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story as he writes in his journals while he takes refuge from the storm in his homestead.  Last issue was the costly Battle of Abrion Bridge and now he is joined by his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker!   The Phil Noto cover has the two Jedi sailing up a river with helmeets of fallen clone troopers around them!  “The Sun Sets and It Rises” is by Christopher Cantwell with art by Madibek Musabekov.  The artist had previously worked on Star Wars #24 published on June 8th.  Obi-Wan hears the sandstorm churning outside of his home.  His vaporator is snapped apart by the storm.  The power cell his lamp winks out as Obi-Wan write in his journal, then he is left in darkness.  Obi-Wan thinks back to the closing days of the Clone Wars with Anakin whom he fought alongside his Jedi brother against Asaaj Ventress and other threats.  I like seeing part of the Clone Wars summarized on one page for viewers unfamiliar to the animated show.

The duo are called for a secret mission.  Anakin notes that they could help with the blockade at Herdessa, the planet was mentioned in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens role-playing game (2016).  Obi-Wan jokes that the Council thinks that Anakin could go back to Podracing.  The joking rapport between friends is interesting.  They meet with Admiral Yularen, he was introduced in the Clone Wars (2008) film and retroactively identified as part of the officers meeting with Governor Tarkin and Vader in Star Wars (1977).  This looks to be an off the books mission, highly classfied, Yularen asks if he remembers Commander Mekedrix from Abrion Bridge.  Mekedrix was distinguished in other battles, but Yularen says that the destruction of the Temple of Eedit on Devaron.  This place first appeared in the Clone Wars episode, “Monster” (2011).  Yularen says he has gone rogue and brings up Death Wind.  I like Musabekov’s backgrounds that show battles and different conflicts in a single image.

Anakin thinks it is the name of a spice trade corridor. Yularen says that it is also the name of an execution squad!  It has been striking clone troopers and Separatists.  On Minntooine, first seen in Star Wars, a Commerce Guild hub was slaughtered.  Note the content and violence may be a bit too much for young readers to early teens.  Yularen notes Mekadrix may have snapped from the horrors of the war.  Obi-Wan remembers his haunted look after the Abrion Bridge battle.  Yularen says that Mekedrix was tracked to the swamplands of Ando.  He is dangerous enough to be killed on sight which shocks Anakin that he can’t be saved that the Republic may not also be made whole.  The Jedi travel there and take a boat up the swampy river, very simliar to Captain Willard tasked to kill Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979).  Real world implications to Star Wars.  George Lucas was intended to be director, until Francis Ford Coppola helmed the wartime masterpiece.  Obi-Wan #4 deals with serious war drama in the sci fi of Star Wars!
