Rings of Power, “The Eye” - Part Two, Review!

Rings of Power has the next moves of Durin IV and Elrond, Galadriel finding Míriel and her decision, and what happens with Nori and the Harfoots!  Durin IV found that the piece of mithril did heal the dying gold leaf and went to secretly mining with Elrond.  Durin IV shatters a tiny window of rock next to shining vein of mithril!  His eyes take in the wonder of his discovery.  My favorite part of this show is how much is told in silence and through the character’s eyes.  Elrond looks and sees an entire cavern that is hope for his people!  He turns to find that Prince Durin is facing his father, the king!  Elrond tries to explain about the find, but Durin III is angry.  Durin IV pleads for his father to see the mithril vein himself.  The king was worried about the safety of mining and his son found the vein without endangering others.  This is just stubborness on the part of Durin III seeing his son’s defiance of his orders.  Instead, the king orders the Elf to be thrown out of Khazad-dûm!, Elrond sits facing the doom of all Elves. Durin III has his son alone and tells him that he was sickly child, but saw in him, a past Dwarven king.

He thought Durin IV would “move mountains.” The prince counters that his father stops him from accomplishing anything. Durin IV says that he considers Elrond as much a brother as if he was born from his mother. This angers Durin III who sees his son using his wife to defend his betrayal of Dwarves. The prince rages that his father is betraying the people’s future by clinging to the past.  King Durin tears off his son’s crest, symbol that he is heir to the throne, around his neck and tosses it away. Then, he walks away and then says to Prince Durin that he is no longer heir! In the morning, Poppy is happily singing and eating an apple, this shocks Nori awake. She says the food is needed for supplies, Poppy says to look outside the tent, and Nori sees that all of the Grove is thriving with crops and plant life. This was after the volcanic rock, I guess Sadoc feels foolish, and really too quick to judge.  Nori is confused and Poppy says the Stranger “fixed it.”

Poppy, pop singer?, is singing and fetching water from a stream.  Then, she sees a large footprint!  Her bucket floats down to be picked up by The Dweller with the other Mystics!  When night falls, Nori and Poppy watch them, The Dweller finds the yellow flower left by The Stranger.  Sinister music, a choral like the Ringwraiths, from Bear McCreary. Nori appears and tells them another direction!  She turns back and they are gone, then The Dweller takes a locket of her hair!  Her father, Largo, is there with a torch along with Marigold, Sadoc, and others.  The Dweller reaches out touching the torch’s fire and extinguishes it!  She blows the sparks from her hand and it ignites the entire Harfoot village!  Their homes are lost!  A camp in the mountains is the destination for the Númenorean soldiers, Berek rears up, and Elendil tries to calm him.  He senses his rider!  Valadil says that Berek defies all of them.  Elendil removes his bit and bridle to set Berek free.  He regrets saving Galadriel, then Galadriel and Theo have reached the camp.

He goes around the camp and then enters a tent for the wounded, there are some gruesome wounds; a wound sewn, loss of leg, and burnt skin.  His mother is missing, but then we hear Bronwyn’s voice, family reunion!  Next, we see Arondir walking over, and Theo hugs him. Galadriel enters and asks for Queen Regent Míriel.  She is alone in a clearing, a red band covering her eyes!, Elendil reports they are ready to leave in an hour.  She asks about the Southlanders and he replies that a garrison will lead them to a protected town.  Galadriel and Bronwyn join them, Galadriel bends the knee, but Míriel says that is not custom in Númenor.  She blames herself for the queen regent leaving the island.  Elendil just wants to sail away as fast as possible.  Míriel reaches for Galadriel’s face, the latter has a single tear fall, but the queen regent says to save it for the enemy.  She swears the return of Númenorean armies and Galadriel says the Elves will join them!  Sisters in war!  Míriel calls for Elendil to ready the ships at the tide, but he is silent.

The Harfoots including Largo are picking through the destruction of their homes.  He tries to get Nori to help, but she doesn’t say anything.  Largo tries to give her hope, but Marigold wants her daughter to know the harsh truth.  Also there is Sadoc, who caused the loss of the cart homes, sending away the only defense they had against the Mystics.  Sadoc says they should have time to mourn.  Largo gives a speech to all of the Harfoots, he says they are not heroic, but the Harfoots do “stay true to each other.”  A Largo moment!  He of course should be leader and not Sadoc trapped in the old ways (like Durin III).  Nori’s father has reignited hope, she goes to help the Stranger, and Poppy joins them.  Marigold joins them, tough woman!, Malva says they will need a tracker - Sadoc.  Not really, The Stranger was never trusted by Sadoc and sent off, but maybe this is his redemption.  They start their journey, The Fellowship of the Harfoots, Sadoc may be in the lead tracking, but Nori should be the leader.

The Númenorean ship is sailing, Míriel stands at the bow, above them on a cliff, Arondir and Galadriel watch the ship leave.  Bronwyn says that they are now ready to travel and headed to Pelargir, a former port city.  It was used by the Númenoreans at the River Anduin’s delta.  Sounds like the exact place that Halbrand used to leave Middle-Earth.  Galadriel says she will report to Gil-galad to face the consequences.  Then, Bronwyn mentions their king, and Galadriel goes to the wounded tent to see Halbrand with a bloody wound on his left side.  He was discovered on the road, Bronwyn tried to treat him, but Galadriel says he needs Elvish medicine.  It seems some time when he was found to actually turn up in the narrative.  Halbrand walks out of the tent and the Southlanders bow to him.  Bronwyn leads a chant, “Strength to the king”, Arondir has horses out for Halbrand and Galadriel.  He should really accompany them for protection if the king is important.  Theo offers her sword back, but Galadriel tells him to use it as a soldier.  Doesn’t Theo have problems with swords?

He leads another cheer, “Strength to the Southlands!”and they ride off.  This part is very implausible, getting onto a horse would be extremely painful for someone with a side wound, riding with all of the movement impossible.  This resolves to Durin’s axe and he admits his failure to Elrond with Disa also on the steps.  She blames his father and tells him that no matter what he said, his brother and other Dwarf lords, he will rule with her.  Disa says that they will have the mithril.  Durin IV holds the healed leaf, but tosses it into the mithril mine.  He orders the guards to seal the mine.  The leaf floats down and finally rests on a rocky surface before it ignites!  We hear a growling before we see the flaming form of the Balrog!  Adar walks in the orangish hell of the former village.  He tells the Orcs to throw off their sun cloaks.  Waldreg has the Orcs cheer, “Hail Adar, Lord of the Southlands!”  Adar says the Southlands doesn’t exist and looks at Mount Doom.  The Southlands title transforms into Mordor!  I imagine “The Eye” might refer to Sauron, but this episode does feel like a finale with Míriel returning to Númenor for reinforcements, Galadriel heading back to Gil-galad with Halbrand to get healed, Nori and her fellowship off to save The Stranger, and Adar ruling Mordor!
