Tiger Division #1 Review!

Tiger Division #1 features a fun team of diverse heroes whose leader has a mysterious destiny!  Tiger Division has an interesting back story, Director Ami Han, is known as the White Fox.  She first appeared in the Korean webcomic, Avengers: Electric Rain #1 (2014) from Yeong-Hoon Goh.  This is available on Marvel Unlimited and Pop Mythology.  White Fox was introduced to American audiences with Contest of Champions #1 (2015).  Luna Snow, Seol Hee, made her debut in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 (2019).  Luna Snow, White Fox, Silk, and Shang-Chi were part of the Agents of Atlas.  The South Korean national hero, Tae-Won, known as Taegukgi first appeared in Taskmaster #3 (2021).  His name refers to the flag of South Korea.  Taskmaster inflitrated the Tiger Division Base copying Ami Han and then using Taegukgi.  It also was the first appearance of the team.  Then, we had the introduction of many team members with Black Cat Annual #1 (2021). This includes The General, Mr. Enigma, and Gun-R II.  A villain, Mongdal took over Taegukgi, with Black Cat caught in a battle against the criminal group, Choi Faction who also sent Mongdal.

The first issue is by Emily Kim, who wrote the Silk title, and artist, Creees Lee, who worked on this year’s Marvel Voices: Identity #1.  It begins at a park next to the Han River in South Korea.  Some women are having a picnic talking out a strange dream, but they are stunned by burning ferry ship headed towards them!  Luna Snow, ice powers and also a K-Pop star, blasts the fire. Still a boy is thrown by an explosion and barely clings to the ship’s rail.  He falls and is snatched up by Lady Bright who surfs in on a card, part of her sorceress power!  Mr. Enigma, a demigod, on a wind surfing board uses his power to send the waves against the ship.  Similar to Maui from Moana (2016)?  The crowds start to run, a little boy is crying, like the scene in Jaws (1975).  He is picked up to safety by The General, a “supernatural totem”, he looks like a giant in green armor with a tin can head with spokes.  He talks awkwardly.  Then, the mecha-like Gun-R II tells The General that the ferry will crash soon.  Lee has a great mixture of comic books and manga, plus a style of his own.  Gun-R II sends out a pink beam for the crowds to follow.  The personalities and powers are a lively mix!

Luna Snow asks for an update and the robot hero says there is another “foreign object.”  It is the super powered Taegukgi who flies in and holds the ferry back, crumpling its hull.  A police captain commends the hero on his save.  She tells him that her kids want his special edition action figures.  He can’t believe he is seeing Ajumma, Korean for a middle-aged woman or aunt.  Taegukgi can see her, but not Lady Bright or any of the others.  She had died, but watched over Tae-Won.  Ajumma wants him to reveal the secrets from his past to take on an upcoming danger to the world!  Taegukgi is left alone until Gun-R II tells him that they have been called back to base by Director Han.  I like the battle introducing all of the heroes and that th most famous and powerful hero has a flaw he needs to overcome.  The Tiger Division HQ is at the peak of Buramsan Mountain.  Ami Han, the shapeshifting White Fox, enters telling the team about the theft from the Southeast Storage Unit.  She projects from her watch a hologram of the Psylot Gem!  The General tracks the energy trail of the gem while Taegukgi has to look back to his past!  Tiger Divison #1 has an interesting group of superheroes, a leader that has fulfill his destiny, and a looming danger!
