The Mandalorian, “The Pirate”, Review!

Episode five of The Mandalorian brings back a familiar X-Wing pilot, his investigation, and attempt to help Greef Karga deal with pirates! Re:cap - “The Foundling”, it is a desperate battle as the Children of the Watch try to stop the reptavian with Ragnar in its clutches! Bo-Katan had lost parts of her armor to the creature’s claws. The Mandalorians use grappling lines, Bo-Katan reaches the reptavian’s head, and starts slashing it. Paz Vizsla crashes down. Din knocks Ragnar free, but the youngling falls! He catches hold of the boy as the tied up reptavian crashes into the lake.

The gigantic Dragon Turtle crushes it in its jaws, “There’s always a bigger fish”, very like the pterandon eaten by the Mosasaurus in Jurassic World (2015). Din takes Ragnar to his father. Paz Vizsla thanks Mando. Bo-Katan’s Gauntlet ship lands as The Armorer leads Grogu. Father and son leave the ship to the cheers of the other Mandalorians, clanging their gauntlets cross-wise together. Din and Bo-Katan follow, he picks up Grogu, and The Armorer says Bo-Katan’s actions honor House Kryze. The highest honor of the Creed is to save a foundling. Bo-Katan points out three more foundlings. Mandalorians lead out the three reptavian chicks from the ship. Sparing them, not eating or killing them, like the Roc chicks in 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)! Do they later learn to ride them?

The Armorer takes Bo-Katan to the Forge to replace her missing pauldrons. Bo-Katan asks for a symbol of her Nite-Owls and the other of the Mythosaur! As The Armorer forges the shoulder armor, Bo-Katan notes that she saw a Mythosaur, The Armorer says it was a vision. Bo-Katan looks at the large Mythosaur symbol at the Forge. “Chapter 21: The Pirate” moves to Nevarro where a ship lands at the spaceport. At the square is the statue of IG-11 with one arm and legs. He will soon be restored somehow, have they checked Kuiil’s place?

In his office, Magistrate Greef Karga is making plans with two engineers for the city with a projected holomap. Then, he hears a disturbance outside, the crowds are looking at the Corsair of Gorian Shard descend! I wonder why there is a ship detection alarm for the violating Nevarro space, ship patrols or city defenses? Karga’s Copper Droid asks about negotiations. Greef wants the protocol droid to evacuate the city. He answers the hologram call of the large pirate captain. Gorian says he knew Greef in charge of the Nevarro Hunters, but nope, he has gone the path of Lando Calrissian! The pirate notes the death of his helmsman and Greef counters that the New Republic protects Nevarro.

Gorian says that Nevarro is independent, but the magistrate notes that the Spinward Patrol stops by to the pirate’s laugh. He is told that Pirate Nation has the Mid-Rim. Gorian shuts down the transmission, Greef looks from the balcony, and calls over an R5 droid. The Corsair’s guns, reminds me of the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, blast the streets of Nevarro City! The protocol droid brings up an escape pod, but Greef wants to be there for his citizens. A Y-Wing descends to the coastal New Republic base of Adelphi. There are a number of roundish military bunkers. An alien song is heard as New Republic pilots play a game like shuffleboard on a table.

The bartender (a Snivvian like the cantina patron, Snaggletooth, really named Zutton) brings a message to Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee). We last saw him in The Book of Boba Fett, “Return of the Mandalorian” (2022). His leather jacket with patches makes him like he is born to be wild. The bartender takes out a case, a holo-viewer, for Carson. Greef in Princess Leia style a request for aid calling in the favor from “The Siege” (2020). The consequence will be that Gorian will make it a pirate base! He is met by Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum) from Star Wars: Rebels! Freaking out. The Lasat people are based on an early design of Chewbacca. He had left to find the new Lasat homeworld of Lira San in “Family Reunion - and Farewell” (2018).

Carson wants to try to ask for additional forces from Coruscant. He takes his X-Wing there and walks to the same New Republic building we saw with Dr. Pershing. Carson notes his appointment and this is seen by Elia Kane, a slight connection with “The Convert.” In his office, we see Colonel Tuttle, played by Tim Meadows. The show likes bringing in comedy actors for parts, but this character is too much like a SNL skit. Carson walks in, but Tuttle hasn’t heard of Nevarro, and the colonel cuts off Greef’s message. Elia takes the time to ask if Tuttle needs something from the commissary.

Ok, she is an Amnesty Officer, but has access to New Republic command? I think she is a sleeper agent for Moff Gideon. Elia says she was on Nevarro, too much of a coincedence, and says it is not part of the New Republic. Carson eyes her Amnesty badge. Tuttle rejects the request since they can barely help the member worlds. Carson notes that there were TIE Fighters seen there, he sees a connection with Moff Gideon and now the pirate king, then he says he heard Moff Gideon didn’t go to trial! The pirate king disrupts that part of the sector, probably given all of the intel from Elia Kane, and then Gideon's forces can easily reclaim it.

Elia notes the conflict will make Nevarro sign the New Republic Charter, kind of like the Trade Federation occupying Naboo? Carson is of course distrustful of Elia’s Imperial thinking. I wonder if this is in part what the Rangers of the New Republic show would be if it wasn’t cancelled. On the dusty sands of the lava flats, the citizens of Nevarro walk, it looks like there is twenty-five of them. They take refuge by a cave as Greef sees the pirate occupation of Nevarro City through macrobinoculars. He makes an announcement that they will be help. Carson’s X-Wing flies to the rocky terrain of the Mandalorian covert.

He spots the Gauntlet fighter and begins to land. Carson introduces himself with arms open as snipers watch him from above. Paz Vizsla is there to meet him, Din says they should be a secret, but Carson says he has a colleague from the Rebellion there, R5-D4! Mando says the covert, but move to another hidden location. He says he owes a favor to Carson who shows the holo-message from Greef, the Mandalorians ready their guns, seriously? He would be easily gunned down. Carson tosses it to Mando. Talking confidential, Carson says Mando will help Greef, and also that it has something to do with the Empire. He goes to his X-Wing, makes a promise to keep their location a secret, and leaves. Bo-Katan asks what he will do and we see in the cave, Din speaking to the others. He notes that they saved him from Greef, but Greef has saved his life and also Grogu.

Din adds that it was the Imperials chased them out and about the land offer from Greef! Good Greef! A chance for them to settle permenantly, tempting for that alone to risk lives.

The Armorer takes the speaking hammer and Paz Viszla takes it telling about the hunters on Nevarro. He brings up why? And then adds that they are Mandalorians! He owes Din and Bo-Katan, yes!, love the loyalty! Paz Vizla finishes with “This is the Way” repeated by the others. Bo-Katan shows them her ship which drop them off to fight. The plan is that she will assist with her ship and Din’s ship.

The N-1 and Gauntlet fighters leap into hyperspace! Inside her ship, Bo-Katan notes that Gorian’s ship will have snubfighters, she tells them they can be heroes, just for one day, going Bowie there. The two ships drop out of hyperspace towards Nevarro. The city is smoking with large areas of burn patches. Some of the pirates push around a drink server, “You sons of a motherless goat!”, and a drunken Quarren blasts at the Kowakian monkey-lizards in the tree. The N-1 Starfighter flies overhead, the Ugnaught Pirate Coxswain points out the ship making a strafing run on the Corsair. The snubfighters are launched and Vane taunts The Mandalorian.

Greef thanks Mando and Din pulls his fighter away so Bo-Katan can blast the pirate fighter!  He has led the Corsair away for the drop. This is similar to the Edge of Tomorrow (2014). The lil’ Anzellian droidsmiths watch the ground level combat and cheer on the Mandalorians! The second team lands near the courtyard. Din blasts another subfighter and the Corsair. Bo-Katan makes a run on the Corsair destroying an engine! The Coxswain recalls the fighters to the Corsair. A Kowakian monkey-lizard points out the pirates in time for the Mandalorians to take cover! The second team is surrounded. A Mandalorian is hit!

Then, Paz Viszla lands and unloads his heavy fire from his blaster cannon! He mows down pirates on both sides! The pirates install a blaster cannon from Greef’s office railing. A Trandoshan gunner blasts several Mandalorians. Vane can only watch as Mando destroys ships up and down, one crashes into the Corsair! The Coxswain reports that they lost another engine and shields are going down. The gunner continues, but we have walking in the office, The Armorer with her hammers, she takes them down painfully! The tide has turned for the pirates and Paz Vizsla orders the others to advance! The pirates start to run, but are covered by Greef’s blaster along with the other citizens! Still, Gorian wants to go down fighting! “The Pirate” has some great action, Carson Teva putting together the rise of the Imperial remnant, and Bo-Katan showing her ability to lead!

The Ark, “Every Single Person Matters”, Part I Review!

The Ark is heading to faster-than-light with the complication of the Trusts, the unknown factor of Kelly, and an uncertain FTL device may put the plucky crew in danger! Re:cap “A Slow Death is Worse“, the discovery of The Ark-3’s only survivor, Kelly, who tells the crew that faster-than-light speeds were accomplished by Evelyn Maddox. She took over Trust Industries. Ark-2 was destroyed, but Ark-3 followed Ark-1’s path to Proxima B. Angus Medford and Alicia Nevins discovered that Ark-15 fired upon Ark-3 with the Aliciaminium! Felix Strickland and Kelly find the weapon’s locker and he ejects the firearms while we see a gun tucked behind Kelly! Eva Markovic and Lt. James Brice find the Maddox unit, but it sets off a self-destruct! This is shut down by Lt. Spencer Lane who has found the code from revived William Trust! The ending was just crisis after crisis! This ep, Lt. Sharon Garnet tries to contact Lane who is at the secret compartment with the confused William Trust (Paul Leonard Murray. Lane tries to explain the situation, but is struck by Helena Trust (Mercedes De La Cruz)! He wants to know why they are on Ark-1. Next, we find Brice in bed with Eva, that was expected. They agree it is a one time affair, he is about to kiss her, then Garnet calls the bridge crew!

At the bridge, Garnet asks them if they have seen Lane, Strickland has made final checks on Ark-3. Brice drops a notice about near death experiences to get a sharp gesture from Eva, funny! Garnet has Nevins run the footage and Brice mentions the Aliciaminium, still love the name, she ignores it! Strickland asks for an enhancement and they see Maddox on the hull! Nevins goes to check Ark-3’s archives, Eva works on the retrofit, and Garnet sends Strickland to find Lane. Nevins finds Angus at hydroponics when Kelly suddenly stands up, warning! warning! Kelly is surprised Ark-15 attacked her ship. Nevins wants to include Kelly, but she refuses. She wants to go to a remembrance for Ark-3 and Angus decides to go with her. Buddy, wrong tree. They leave Nevins behind. By the way, in this whole exchange, Nevins never babbled, a development? They get to the ceremony and Kelly doesn’t seem too concerned about her former crew members, maybe because she killed a few if not most of them! William Mulcahy (Steven William Moore) also presides over this memorial. She puts her arm on Angus interested in his work.

Strickland reports to Garnet about Lane missing. Lane is unconscious as William paces, seriously?, they just let him lie on the floor? He recalls in a flashback that they were leaving the company headquarters. William was angry at the takeover of his company. Strange nod by Helena to a guard before entering the car. They kiss and Helena injects William with a device. Yeah, someone who suddenly wakes up and attacks a crew member can’t be trusted. He realizes his wife put them in Ark-1! A search party with Strickland, Nevins, Brice, and Jelena checks the ship, Stickland has already looked for Lane, it will be at a place that is not a common part of the ship. They look, but report to Garnet that they couldn’t find him. Strickland has Nevins look up Lane’s last transmission. She has found the location, Sector OT, unknown to all of them! Dr. Sanjivni Kabir is conducting an autopsy of the other Ark-3 crew member, Ross, she records her findings. She is very shaken that the bleeding she was trying to stop was not effective. He had died of heart failure. Angus checks on her next to Kelly, be careful Angus. He says he has come for the NOR (Natural Organic Reduction).

Not really considerate, Angus, Kelly just stares on, and Dr. Kabir says she is still conducting the exam. She sends Angus away. Helena tries to explain that losing his company and the threat on their lives is why she took them to Ark-1. Then, she brings up his affairs. Lane wakens, Helena tries to apologize, and help him up!  Lane brings them up to date that they are years from Proxima B. William offers to help on the bridge, but Lane explains he has to protect Trust. William brings up that when the atmospheric de-carbonization initiative didn’t work, he built The Ark. Helena trying to act nice asks for Captain Lester, Lieutenant Commander Susan Ingram, and Ensign Trent. He says they all died. Strickland and Jelena are checking the cargo hold where he had pursued Trent. He realizes there is a space between their search area, but not how to reach it. In the engineering room, Eva is attaching the Maddox retrofit almost by rote while Nevins is impressed about it. Nevins mentions that the faster than light discoveries led to disease control which interests Eva. Then, she brings up Angus, and Eva says she should “hold on tight.” Then Strickland and Jelena arrive and he wants her help with the Ark blueprints.

Eva says it is “redundant systems”, but Strickland wants her to follow them. Cat is resting when Dr. Kabir enters. She takes off her robe to show a mole she wants removed. Dr. Kabir is there for a session so Cat gets to her seat, funny! She admits her hands were shaking and that she was addicted to pills. Cat sympathesizes saying she was in a UV storm ten years ago, became dependent on pills, and then went to a rehab center! So, she says her quarters are her rehab center. Cat is becoming more and more an important crew member. In fact with the tensions of the crew, I wonder why Lt. Garnet did not make a shipwide announcement and have Cat work to assist Dr. Kabir with so much time on her hands. The doctor says Strickland locked up the drugs, more drugs came from Ark-3, so Cat offers to keep them under lock and key to give them out when needed. Yay! Strickland and Jelena begin searching the wall for a latch and he manages to open the door. William is still pacing and Lane reveals the hidden door to the genetic material. William says it was to be installed on their scheduled Ark, but Helena planned ahead, so they kiss. The next door has locked out the team and Eva has to by pass the door lock.

William is impressed seeing the genetic library, he points out to Lane the butterfly, he says the butterflies pollinated the last crops. Next, he says only the command crew were briefed on the library. Then, they hear the door open. Strickland enters first and Helena recognizes him! I hope she somehow saved Felix’s daughter! Strickland and Jelena escort the Trusts through the ship with the rest of the group, some crew members are excited at their appearance. Including Cat and Nevins! One woman spits at William for his experiments. Helena defends her husband and reminds her of the ship. Jelena takes the woman away. They reach the bridge, Garnet is about to welcome them, but Brice gives William a right cross! This is stunning! Stickland holds him back and Brice yells that someone who had Klampkins, his disease, and that he put it into the atmosphere! Garnet has Jelena take away Brice. He walks away. Garnet apologizes, introduces herself as acting captain, and then has them on the bridge with food and Dr. Kabir check on their post-cryo. Helena wants Felix to guard them. Garnet looks at Lane who admits he knew about the Trusts since Trent’s death. Love the tension! The Ark continues to travel in space and with a very human, relatable crew and more secrets!

The Mandalorian, “The Foundling“, Review!

Another excellent episode of The Mandalorian, directed by Carl Weathers, and featuring Grogu learning and remembering and Bo-Katan! Re:cap - “The Convert”, Dr. Pershing was warned about continuing his research, he meets with Elia Kane and says he needs a mobile lab. She says they can find one outside of their perimeter which would result in being sent to the Re-Integration Institute. He notes that perfectly working technology that is Imperial, but his co-worker says it would need authorization with the decommissioning of the Alliance fleet. I think this would take the New Republic in the same problem as the Old Republic. The fleet, especially the Mon Calamari ships, could be used for system defense and also to fight off any new threats. Elia takes Pershing, he is a little nervous, to a hovertrain station. Elia greets a Bufopel in a fur coat, it is a bulky alien seen in The Last Jedi (2017), as Taungsday, the third day of the week. A bit more of the Star Wars world. She tells Pershing that they are head to the Shipyard Depot. Ticket droids start to check the compartment, surprisingly poor CGi, it is like they are floating while walking. They carry tickets and not scan i.d.s to enter trains in Star Wars? Elia has Pershing leap off the hovertrain before the stop. No security is alerted? No cam droids? Nothing to stop anyone from taking anything from a shipyard?

They walk into a decommissioned Star Destroyer and introduce themselves. Elia opens a door to a lab and Dr. Pershing assembles some material in a case. They see some guards and start to run to the bridge, but a spotlight from an airspeeder falls on the duo as NewRebublic guards surround them. Elia takes away Pershing’s case as he is arrested. He wakes the next day attended to by a Mon Calamari med tech (John Ott). His voice doesn’t sound very Mon Calamari. Pershing is told Amnesty Officer G68, Elia, turned in a report. She watches from a window. A Mind Flayer is set placed by him, explained to be at low voltage used for trauma not wiping out his mind. The Mon Calamari says he will return when Pershing is finished. He says he was set up by Elia. A Twi’lek Amnesty Affairs Commissioner (Sunkrish Bala) thanks Elia. She wants to be there for Pershing whom she is a friend. She turns up the dial, if a device is changed from the Empire, why is there a Mind Flyer setting? watches, and chomps on a biscuit. Mando has brought Bo-Katan to the Children of the Watch covert we saw in the first episode. Again, I don’t have a problem with Dr. Pershing, but his middle part of the story feels like filler.

He tells Bo-Katan to keep her helmet on. Paz Vizla sees their ships land from the cave and other Mandalorians follow. He denies them entry since Din is thought to be an apostate. Mando tells him he was at the mines and they were told lies to keep them in exile. Bo-Katan vouches for Din, Paz Vizla doesn’t recognize her, and told that she is apostate like Mando. He shows the vial of the Living Waters, there is some whispers, and they allowed in. They meet with the Armorer and Din gives her the vial. She pours it into her water and says he is redeemed. The Armorer also gives redemption to Bo-Katan Kryze and accepts her into the covert! The other Mandalorians greet them and Bo-Katan looks at the Mythosaur symbol. “Chapter 20: The Foundling” picks right up with the Children of the Watch praticing with weapons outside of the cave, fighting in matches, watched over by judges. Bo-Katan checks on them.  A Youngling uses his jetpack, kinda unconvincing like he is pulled up by wires, no jet exhaust, but it continues. She sees Grogu alone by himself almost meditating, but really not part of the group.

It is not really rocks he is levitating, but crustaceans, stone crabs?, and Din takes him to the other foundlings. They are dueling hand to hand and Mando sets down Grogu as to be the challenger. Ragnar, now with his helmet, throws down another foundling. Bo-Katan wonders about Grogu, shin height, taking on a teenage boy. Din calls over a judge. The judge can’t believe the challenge, but Mando tells him he is Grogu’s ward. He tells Bo-Katan that he will move onto to apprentice by the challenge. Ragnar chooses training darts. The boy asks about Grogu’s helmet and Din says he can’t say the Creed. Mando tells Ragnar, “One does not speak, unless one knows”, part of the Creed and notes that Ragnar might learn from the challenge. Bo-Katan straps the wrist dart onto Grogu and says her father was the same way! She has faith in him, Bo-Katan is starting to become my favorite Mandalorian. The judge says there are three darts, Din tells his son to squeee his fist to launch the darts, Ragnar fires instantly. He splatters green paint on Grogu’s robe. Another point is scored. Din tells Grogu that he can use his Force abilities.

Ragnar fires, but Grogu does a Force leap over him and then back! Ragnar is surprised and Grogu launches three darts at his chest winning! Bo-Katan asks Din if he taught him the leap, but he says it wasn’t him. We know it was Luke Skywalker. Ragnar walks to the edge of the lake, a reptavian swoops down, and pulls him away! This reminds me of Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) except a condor dragon snatched up Cindel. Great! They brought in blurrgs from that movie, now there is just Teek!  It is pursued by Paz Vizla and other Mandalorians on jetpacks! Paz Vizla has also lost jetpack fuel with Din at his side. They see the Gauntlet fighter flown by Bo-Katan follow it in the setting sun. She returns to the covert and asks for a hunting party and found the nest of the reptavian. Bo-Katan tells Paz Vizla and the Armorer that she can climb the peak of the beast. Din volunteers The Armorer assigns Paz Vizla and the Shriek-hawk Training Team to join them. They leave and The Armorer takes Grogu to the Forge. She fashions a new piece of armor for Grogu at the heart of the Mandalorian people. The Armorer shows how The Forge is like the Mandalorians and that it can “show weaknesses.”

Grogu watches as a press repeatedly strikes the armor piece. This brings Grogu back to when clone troopers were breaching the door to the Jedi Temple. A Jedi says to take him to Kelleran. It is breached with a thunderclap sound, a canned sound effect, part of what is used when Stormtroopers entered the Rebel Blockade Runner. A female Jedi Knight tries to hold of the clone troopers as Grogu reaches the elevator, her body falls in it! This maybe a big ask, but SW is usually comprehensive, so I would like to know who were the Jedi who came to Grogu’s defense. The elevator reaches the top floor, and out of the door comes Kelleran Beq (Ahmed Best)! I thought it was cool that Ahmed Best saves Grogu, but not if his character came out of nowhere, and he has not. Ahmed Best from Jar Jar Binks to instant fan favorite! Kelleran appeared in the Star Wars Kids and Youtube game show, Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge (2020)!  Kelleran uses a green lightsaber which in the Expanded Universe would make him a Jedi Consular like Yoda! Kelleran picks up the fallen Jedi’s blue lightsaber and uses them in a dual fighting style, Jar’Kai, used by Ahsoka Tano! I really like Kelleran’s use of the lightsabers against the clone troopers!

He fights off a number of clone troopers, but gets in a two-person speeder bike with Grogu and flies from the burning Jedi Temple. A Republic gunship blasts at them, damaging the engine at the rear of the bike!, firing within the Galactic City? I also wonder if this distracts attention away from Senator Organa and Yoda’s escape in Revenge of the Sith (2005)? He takes a gunship into a hovertrain tunnerl and then plows through the plaza with the Umate display from last episode. Kelleran makes a crash landing on a platform next to a H-type Nubian yacht which was flown by Padme! A Naboo captain (Juan Javier Cardenas) checks on him and then a gunship lands with clone troopers. The Naboo security forces try to hold them off as Kelleran and Grogu enter the ship. They are followed by V-Wing starfighters. Kelleran makes the jump to hyperspace while Grogu is stunned by the Armorer’s hammer strikes. She attaches the circular rondel to Grogu’s chest with a Mudhorn symbol. Bo-Katan’s ship lands and the seven Mandalorians walk to the peakof the reptavian. She points out an outcropping where they can make camp. Bo-Katan asks Din how they can eat with helmets on and he explains they find places where they can remove helmets alone.

They leave and Paz Visla tells Bo-Katan as leader she can stay by the fire. A nice moment with Bo-Katan taking off her helmet, it would be a shame to have an episode without seeing Katee Sackhoff’s face! In the morning, Bo-Katan notes that the war party should not use jetpacks to alert the creature. They ascend up the peak with grappling lines. I don’t get why Paz Vizla carries around his heavy blaster cannon which he is really unable to use. They also wear regular boots not with climbing attachements. Din signals to Bo-Katan who also notes to the others that they are reachng the nest. It is a interwoven with large branches. A red Mandalorian helmet lies in the nest. Din locates a heat source with his helmet. Paz Vizla rushes in to find his son! For some reason, I think his mother is The Armorer. Instead, three reptavian chicks snap at him!  This is right out of the two-headed Roc scene in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)! Nice nod to Ray Harryhausen! The reptavian mother regurgiates Ragnar to feed her chicks and then bites Paz Visla to take him and Ragnar in her claw to fly away! The others chase after them. Bo-Katan is bashed and starts to fall before ejecting her shoulder pauldrons! Grappling lines are used to attach to the reptavian and the two Mandalorians have to be rescued! A great episode of The Mandalorian, deeply exploring the Mandalorian culture, the rescue of Grogu, Ahmed Best’s return to Star Wars, and the spotlight on Bo-Katan Kryze!

The Mandalorian, “The Convert”, Review!

This episode moves from Mando and Bo-Katan to another part of the Star Wars universe for an unknown reason. A necessary Re:cap of “The Mines of Mandalore”, Din Djarin is driven to finish his mission and Bo-Katan Kryze leads him through the undercity. She says the fighting between clans made them weak against the Empire. They reach the mines, she said she took the Creed, but is cynical about the myths. They reach the Living Waters and she reads from a plaque about Mandalore the Great fighting the Mythosaur. It became the symbol of Mandalore. Mando takes off his cloak, pistols, and jet pack. Then, Din recites the Creed walking into the dark water, chest deep he is dragged under the waters! Bo-Katan with her helmet on leaps in and is assisted by her jet pack. She searches for him, helmet light on, and then deactivates it to see Din’s helmet light. He has fallen to the cavern bottom. Bo-Katan pulls him upwards, her helmet light illuminates a tusk, and then the eye of the Mythosaur! She gasps air bubbles, but continues on taking Din to the surface! “Chapter 19: The Convert” starts at the rescue, on the steps, Bo-Katan looks out at the still waters.

Mando starts coughing, Grogu is at his side, he says, “I am redeemed.” Bo-Katan says she is his witness. She is ready to leave. Din picks up a vial of the Living Water. Bo-Katan asks what he saw and he replies he just saw the chasm. She says it must have been from the bombing. Bo-Katan asks if he saw anything alive, but Mando is just surprised. It pulled him down and let him go almost as a test of Bo-Katan’s faith. Her Gauntlet fighter leaves the planet. Din only wants to be left off at ship and Bo-Katan mentions not taking off his helmet. They repeat, “This is the Way.” Suddenly, they struck by a blast! Five TIE interceptors are in pursuit. They are not close enought to Kalevala. Din mans the rear cannon. Bo-Katan breaks atmo and heads towards her castle. She says she can’t slow for his transfer to his N-1. He manages only to destroy one fighter. Grogu closes up his pod. Mando makes the jump, TIEs streak past him, a short burst of his jet pack sets him on the landing pad. An interceptor starts his run on the landing pad, but the N-1 does a quick take-off! Din goes into a free fall and unleashes a torpedo to destroy the interceptor. Bo-Katan is evading the other TIE interceptors around Kalevala’s cliffs. R5-D4 panics.

The Gauntlet clips the edge of a cliff and an interceptor runs into it! I like the cliff starfighter chase! An interceptor is destroyed by the N-1! Bo-Katan has Din split up to take out another TIE fighter. She pulls a reverse, cutting engines, and using a wing to turn around. Bo-Katan blasts the last interceptor. They head back to the castle. There are explosions as TIE Bombers level the Kyrze Castle. Similar to the attack on Maz Kanata’s castle. Bo-Katan starts to hunt down the bombers, she destroys one with a missile. Din sees on his target scope filled with enemy targets. Bo-Katan pulls back and R5 falls like he is almost fainting. She remarks that there are too many for a warlord. It looks like her former army has turned the former Imperials against her. Mando sends over coordinates to Bo-Katan, “someplace where they can’t find them.” Dr. Pershing was last seen in “The Rescue” (2020), he had part of his ear blasted off by Cara Dune when he disrespected Alderaan. Comms Officer, was also seen in “The Rescue”, she admitted the shuttle for emergency docking.  There is explosions as TIE Bombers level the castle. as TIE Bombers level the Kryze Castle.

Mando sends over coordinates to Bo-Katan, “someplace where they can’t find them.” This shifts to to the night skyline of Coruscant. This is not the jump place of Mando, but just a sudden transition that is confusing. At the Galaxies Opera House which we first saw in Revenge of the Sith (2005), a speech is given by Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi). He was last seen in “The Rescue” (2020) where he was insulting Alderaan and got his ear blasted by Cara Dune. An officer walks up the steps to take a seat, a hologram projects Pershing who speaks on the circular stage. He explains his research was used unknowingly. The officer takes her seat, it is the comm officer (Katy M. O’Brian) who allowed the shuttle to land in “The Rescue.” Pershing says he lost his mother, but cloning could have saved her.

He says the Kaminoans used cloning from a single individual and his research was to use the best of two donor’s genetic code. He is met by several aristocrats including a Mon Calamari one. They fawn over him which makes absolutely no sense with the rest of his segment. Pershing is taken to the Amnesty Housing by a taxi droid who suggests him destinations. He finds several amnesty officers having a drink at a table. Pershing is greeted by Amnesty Officer M-34 (Max Fowler). His own number is Amnesty Scientist L52, but he is famous enough to be a featured speaker at the opera house? I don’t understand the dehumanizing numbers. The New Republic seems harsh. Pershing explains that he was transferred from the Re-Integration Institute. M-34 introduces G27 (James Chen), M40 (Matthew Bellows), and the comm officer now known as G68. Besides G68, the others are unimportant and don’t play into the rest of the episode. He recognizes her from Moff Gideon’s ship. The others just heard rumors about Gideon like he escaped or a Mind Flayer was used on him. This was mentioned by Cara Dune in “Redemption” (2019). The term comes from the Dungeons & Dragons monster who was also introduced in Stranger Things.

G68 offers to show Pershing around Coruscant. They mentions things they miss and Pershing brings up the yellow travel biscuits from the ration packs. Later, he finds a box of travel biscuits at his door. In an office space cubicle, Pershing works cataloging data cards for the archives, a job for droids. So he is well known enough to lecture at the opera house, has many wealthy citizens who could be patrons, and Pershing is stuck doing a rote administrative job? If this is a commentary on enemy scientists after war time, then it is a boring one. G68 and Pershing have glowing treats, colorful popsicles. Later, she reveals her name is Elia Kane. There are magic tricks and a juggling droid on stilts. Yes, a carnival-like atmosphere make Coruscant a family environment. Not corrupt like in Attack of the Clones (2002) or dangerous in the Clone Wars. Pershing’s attention is drawn to a rock formation, G68 explains that it is Umate, Coruscant’s highest mountain. The music is a carnival variation of the Revenge of the Sith opening with the Battle of Coruscant. G68 tricks him into trying to touch Umate, but a droid warns him. The next day, Pershing meets with a parole droid who just asks basic questions, he asks if he can continue his work. The droid says cloning is forbidden by the Coruscant Accords. The Mandalorian, third episode, moves from action to inaction, a change in tone and characters with Dr. Pershing, it is like if in The Book of Boba Fett, episodes suddenly become The Mandalorian, oh, ok.

The Ark, “A Slow Death Is Worse“, Review!

The Ark has encountered another ship, but more mysteries emerge with a survivor! Last ep of The Ark, Brice is unconscious as Lane checks in. He wakes up saying she loves him and gets a slap. Brice thanks Eva for covering for him. He admits he has a terminal disease without a cure. He has “clusters” of passing out which was last one year before launch. A tense, dramatic moment away from the romance. Garnet revives with gel covering her burns. She asks about Dr. Kabir and coughs. Garnet sets herself up and Dr. Kabir admits she took amphetimines. Garnet thanks Strickland for helping Dr. Kabir. She is wheeled in by Strickland, wrapped up medical bandages. Lane and Alicia update her. Eva has scanned the planet and has not found the alien substance or the plutonium. Lane says it should be called alicianium! Lane asks Brice to check out the other side of the planet. What they see stuns them, The Ark-3! I don’t think this is some time travel. If a ship traveled at near-light speed, then time wouldn’t seem to pass for the ship, but it would to others. Ark-3 could travel at near-light speed and pass Ark-1 without even noticing. The Ark-1 approaches Ark-3, Sharon sends a call, but no response. Lt. James Brice’s shuttle is to the side.

Brice starts his approach to the ship. It’s command module is scarred with green liquid, the aliciainium. At the pilot center, Lt. Garnet wants Alicia Nevins to monitor them and this includes Garnet to stay in her medical condition. Lt. Spencer Lane thanks Garnet. Brice walks with Eva who wants to know why he volunteered for a dangerous mission. Cat walks onto the bridge. She admits that her best friend was on Ark-3. Garnet sends her to observation. She walks out to see Angus Medford who has an aloe plant. Cat tells him to get over his crush. Lane leads Lane and the others in his compression suit. He says it is a search and rescue mission. Lane looks down to see the bodies of the Ark-3 crew members! They find that they all died from suffocation. Eva explains it was a hull breach. She takes off her helmet. The others follow. Strickland has Jelena Griff protect the compression gear. Garnet orders them to the sleeping pod bays. It is exactly the Ark, but filled with bodies. Lane reaches the bridge and starts activating it. Eva says the deaths reminds her of the mass graves after the continental fires! She has reached sleeper pod 1 which had crew quarters. Lane reports that he cannot enter his command codes.

A crew member, Sasha Novak (Milos Cvetkovic) enters captain’s quarters and finds a half-drunk bottle of bourbon. He opens a closet and the captain’s body falls out. Then, the door closes! Chills. He is the survivor, not a simple Red Shirt, so worth saving as an engineer. There is a biohazard alert! Eva cuts through the door’s control and Sasha falls out. Lane performs CPR and saves Sasha. Strickland turns over the body of his husband, Robert Strickland! This is a nightmare! Lane heads to the first mate’s quarters and found a man with a knife in his chest, he starts to run as the doors close. There is a person with a helmet and medical gown! Lane runs after the person and pulls off the helmet, a woman, Kelly (Samantha Glassner)! He holds her broken arm. She says there are seven dangerous people in medbay. Lane reports it to Brice, but they are all dead by pills. Kelly says twelve of them were in maintenance suits. They start to run after the other survivor, Ross. Strickland confronts Kelly. Lane has found Ross on the floor. They drag him to Ark-1’s medbay. Dr. Kabir sees internal bleeding from his stomach. She has Strickland reset Kelly’s arm. They monitor Dr. Kabir, only she can save Ross, she cuts using a medical laser. He starts to crash and Kelly breaks into the operating room, the last survivor.

Strickland asks her about Robert and she says met him in the mess hall and the Ark-3 was re-directed to Proxima B. He says his daughter would be 8. Strickland walks away. Dr. Kabir runs out to comfort Strickland and he says Robert would leave without her. He has lost everything. William Trust was in another section. Could his daughter be a stowaway? This pain after pain after pain, yes, it is sci fi, fictional, but I hope something hopeful happens to Strickland. At the conference room, everyone argues until silenced by Garnet. She says she was an engineering trainee. Nevins says a warp bubble had them move faster than light speed. Ark-3 would only take nine months. Kelly says Ark-2 was destroyed in light speed! Garnet orders a break. Garnet limps over to see Cat, she healed fast, and then gave a list of crew members to Cat. Kelly is surrounded by crew members with questions. Cat breaks up the mob. Garnet calls for quiet. Kelly agrees to tell everyone, she says New Africa, Australia, and the Americas were destroyed. The tides took out much of the rest of the world. She says the world government collapsed and Kelly adds GSA was still operating with twelve Arks ready to go. They could be the last of humanity! So much is going on, but the original intent was fuel, I hope they got it, parts, and technology to upgrade the engines.

At the bridge, Kelly has a new look courtesy of Cat, Lane admires her. She mentions there is medicine in the medbay, they take Nevins. Garnet has Strickland go to the Ark to find milistary supplies. Kelly volunteers to return to her Ark. The plutonium is loaded into cases. Jelena Griff  (Tamara Radovanovic) finds in a crew quarter, a katana, she sees Strickland and drops a bag with the sword important to Robert. A crew member brings Dr. Kabir, medical supplies including ampethemines. Kelly says a door was blocked, but Strickland enters his security codes and unloads a locker of rifles and pistols. Kelly is tearful and says that his daughter was with Robert at a food market that turned inot a riot. She says she died from a bullet. He puts the weapons into a chamber and sends the weapons into space! Strickland leaves and Kelly has a pistol tucked in behind her! I don’t know if I can trust her and that maybe Strickland’s daughter somehow lives! Can't trust Kelly's word about the fate of anything, why doesn't the ship have multiple records of happened to the Earth? The geniuses work on restoring the security camera footage. Angus flatters Nevins, I heart Medins. The appearance of The Ark-3 has put more mysteries, a new character, that may up the danger to our Ark-1!

The Last of Us, “Look for the Light “ Review!

The Last of Us season one finale brings us to the Salt Lake City hospital, but of course with consequences for Joel and Ellie! Re:cap “When We Are In Need”, Ellie tried to get help for Joel recovering from his stab wound, this is from James and David, from Silver Lake. The latter who has taken a strange interest in Ellie. She took back the penicillin to inject into Joel. Ellie finds crows take flight, runs to warn Joel, and then rides out on the horse to distract the hunters. James shoots the horse, David brings back Ellie, and the others search for Joel. One hunter enters the house, he starts to walk down the steps to the garage, but finds no one on the table! Joel stabs the man who silently dies. Ellie wakes up in a cell watched by David. He wants her to trust him. Another hunter approaches Timothy and is knocked out by Joel’s rifle butt. Timothy is being interrogated by Joel, strapped to a chair, and stabbed in the knee! Joel shoves his knife in Timothy’s mouth and wants the location of Silver Lake from a map. He points it out and Joel kills him. The other hunter is angry and Joel brings down a lead pipe on his head! He is absolutely ruthless in finding Ellie! She tries to get out of the cage, but intead is repulsed by something. David brings her a plate of food which he says is deer meat. Silver Lake Solent Green is People! David sees in Ellie what he sees in himself, a “violent heart.”

David puts his hand on the bar, then over Ellie’s hand, eeee!, then she breaks his finger! Joel staggers over to Silver Lake and finds a blood trail leading to a bait shop. He takes Ellie’ backpack, in another is the body of their horse, and the headless corpses of three people. David walks in with James and readies his gun.  They grab Ellie and she bites David’s hand! James holds her to a table and David holds up a machete, when Ellie says she’s Infected! He slams down the cleaver and looks at  his bite. Ellie picks up the cleaver to bury into James! Ellie killed Joel! David shoots at her and Ellie finds the doors are locked. He takes up the cleaver and then Ellie tosses a torch that starts to burn the restaurant. I think the other townspeople would have seen their meeting place burn. Joel searches in the storm, he is not going to rescue her, this is not that show. Ellie sneaks into the kitchen and takes a knife. She stabs David, but is thrown down, David and he climbs on top of her! She grabs the cleaver and then loses it chopping him again and again screaming! There is no Ellie here. She stumbles outside and then held by Joel, Ellie screams, and then tries to reassure her. Then, he says the best line in the show, “It’s okay, baby girl.” This is his name for Sarah, his daughter, whom he lost so long ago. Twenty years from the show’s first episode, “When You’re Lost in the Darkness”, both broken, but they are family.

“Look for the Light” begins in darkness, a woman, Anna (Ashley Johnson) is heard desperately running, then we see her running in a yellow dress, very pregnant. Johnson of course is the original voice of Ellie in the games. Anna crosses a field, a city is in the background, to reach a farmhouse. She enters and says, “It’s me”, but no one responds. Anna blocks a door and then is about to give birth!, she has a switchblade ready. An Infected woman burst through and goes after her. She reaches for the switchblade and stabs until finally stabbing it in the head. She gives birth next to the Infected and the baby screams. The mother says, “You tell them Ellie.”! Ellie gives birth to Ellie!, the bite when she is alive might be the mix like Blade’s mother turning him into a dhampir, half-vampire, but I don’t it will be this easy. Great intro! Three flashlights in the night, a man tries to open a door, then turns to see Marlene! We haven’t seen her sice she was wounded in the premiere, “When You’re Lost in the Darkness”! She enters through a back door and finds the house is empty. Marlene carefuly climbs steps calling out for Anna. She reaches the top floor and finds Anna with baby Ellie. Anna hands over Ellie and her switchknife! She wants Marlene to take Ellie and kill her! Anna pleads for Marlene to end her. Marlene hands off the baby, asks to cover her eyes, and then walks over to room and we hear the gunshot!

Baby Ellie cries and then we shift to the older Ellie with her eyes closed in the back of a truck. Joel calls for her and has can of a Beef-A-Roni. Also, a game of Boggle. They start walking, headed to a hospital in Salt Lake City, and Joel mentions he saw a broken guitar in an RV. She is distracted, still disturbed from what happened last episode, they reach some rubble. Ellie says they are going to cut through a building and find a skyscraper to look around. Joel says they could blast their way through the debris, then repeats her plan. It’s a joke, Ellie has lost her enthusiasm and humor. It has some orange tarps that make it look almost like a horror scene. He wants to boost Ellie up to lower a ladder. Instead, she is looking through building plans. Joel checks on her and then they get back to boosting her up. Ellie reaches the top level and then she is excited and drops the ladder! She races up building stairs, Joel follows, and then she reaches some forest grounds. A giraffe is grazing on a bush next to her! This is more stunning than the Brachiosaurus in Jurassic Park (1993)! They are at head level with the giraffe from the building. Like Dr. Grant, Joel hands Ellie some leaves to feed it, she is impressed by the giraffe’s tongue. This is a real giraffe, not Cgi or an animatronic, which makes it that more amazing. It has snapped her out, maybe just for a moment, a nice moment for this show. The giraffe moves on and Ellie chases after her. Other giraffes are around a baseball field with a small watering hole in its center. Ellie likes the view.

Joel says they don't have to go the hospital. She says she been through too much not to go to the hospital. Ellie reassures Joel that she will go with him back to Tommy’s or to a sheep ranch afterwards. It is the strength of Ellie that finishes their mission. They walk to a much of medical tents which Joel explains was made by the army. He says that he was in one for his shot to his temple on the second day. He admits that he was the one who shot and missed, attempted suicide! Ellie brings up the old adage “Time heals all wounds.” Joel tells it wasn’t time and looks to her. He asks for puns and Ellie takes out No Pun Intended Volume Too. Joel is unimpressed by the first jokes and as they talk, we see behind them a soldier toss a grenade at them! He hears it and pulls away Ellie as it explodes! Joel is of course disoriented with the ringing from the grenade. Soldier pull away Ellie and knock out Joel with a rifle butt!  White-out. White curtains. The shape of the Firefly symbol. Joel starts to wake and then is greeted by Marlene. She says Ellie was worried about him. Marlene also adds that she had five men to protect her and Joel made it there with Ellie. All Joel wants is to see Ellie. Marlene explains that the doctor thinks she has been growing Cordyceps since birth so it makes normal Cordyceps think she is already part of the fungi. She says that the doctor will remove it and then try to duplicate the chemical messengers for everyone.

Joel says that Cordyceps grows in the brain. There is a guard in his room with a M-16. Joel wants to see her, but he is struck by the guard. Marlene says she was at Ellie’s birth and made a promise to Anna. If anyone knew that the cure cost the life of a girl, what would they think? Marlene orders her guards to take Joel to the highway with his pack. She hands over a switchblade. If he tries anything, she orders them to shoot Joel! This absolute decision is like FEDRA, no discussion, and subjects can’t be told what will happen to them. Marlene doesn’t know or care about Joel’s loyalty to Ellie. The guards push Joel along the halls and he stops at a fire alarm. He is moved on to a dark stairway. Of course Joel stops until the guard leans in to try to push him, Joel grabs his rifle and shoots the other guard. He shoots the remaining guard’s leg and asks where is Ellie. Joel kills him and then goes room to room killing others, their lives have no value to him since they are keeping him away from Ellie. A pure soldier, acting not out of rage or fear, he quietly kills floors of Firefly soldiers. Joel reaches the Pediatric Surgery wing. He reaches the operating room, Ellie is sedated on the operating table, and Joel says, “Unhook her.” The doctor picks up a scalpel and Joel gives him a round to the head. Joel repeats again, “Unhook her” as the nurses scream. One of the nurses is played by Laura Bailey who voiced Abby Anderson in The Last of Us Part II (2020).

He takes his baby girl down the escalator and out to the garage. Joel sees a truck being charged up and Marlene is there with her gun. Marlene says that Ellie would have wanted the operation. Joel hesitates. He can’t fail Ellie like he did Sarah. Joel is driving the truck, Ellie revives in the back seat, he says the Fireflies were giving her tests, there are others like her, dozens of them. We know he is lying. There is the scene where Marlene starts to lower her gun. Joel says the doctors couldn’t make the cure work. Then, we see Marlene shot! Ellie notes the hospital gown, Joel makes up that raiders attacked the hospital, and they can find new clothes. He says he is taking them home to which he is most likely saying is Jackson, Wyoming with Tommy. Ellie turns to sleep. We see Joel carrying Ellie, but using his other hand to shoot Marlene. Joel puts Ellie in the back seat, hears Marlene moan in pain, and then gives her a last bullet to stop her from coming from them. They reach Wyoming when the truck dies, Joel tells Ellie it is a five mile hike. He points out that Sarah liked hiking and says that she was more “girly”, funny. I don’t know what has happened to the town when they were away. Joel says Ellie would have liked Sarah. They reach a hill overlook of Jackson. Actually, Maria didn’t give them permission to leave the town so I’m not certain she would want them back. Ellie hesitates. She tells Joel about the first person she killed, Riley. Then, she has Joel swear about what he said about the Fireflies was true. He does so. Ellie agrees to continue with him. Did Joel do the right decision?  The real question is did he do the right thing for Ellie? I’m not sure about that one. A compelling, watch every moment show that isn’t mired with its monsters, it is more concerned about its people and their complexity.
