Top Five Movies of 2023 (so far)!

Summer’s end is the time to go over some of favorite films of 2023! It strangely began with M3GAN. Then, the bizarre Shin Ultraman, before I was stunned by Missing. This was followed by Pathaan which was a great Bollywood action movie. Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania which really eroded my interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It was not an easy time for me recovering from surgery which lasted months. I missed the anime movie, Suzume, to focus on healing up. I did manage to see Spirited Away: Live On Stage consulting with my nurses. I also missed the one movie that I had wanted to see, The Magic Flute, since it quickly disappeared from theaters. It was time to get back to the theaters with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Then, it was time to go back to catch films that I had missed out on before they left theaters, John Wick: Chapter 4. I finally caught The Magic Flute on streaming. I have missed documentaries like STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie, dramas like Air, and films like Past Lives. The summer was filled with movies like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Flash soaked with CGi, but fun in their own way. This will be the top five movies of 2023 to the summer releases.

What is interesting is films that are unexpected surprises, offering worldbuilding visuals, and exceeding expectations. #5 Missing, this movie was stunning with its complex mystery, the fear of losing a family member, all within the parameters of ScreenLife; a story told with computer, cell phone, and television screens. It has a great lead with Storm Reid, June is a normal teen, but is forced to be clever and work out what happened to her mother! Streaming on Netflix now.

#4 Barbie, yup, it is a sensation, but it exceeded the toy doll come to life premise, really used the fantasy to reflect real life, people and their problems, plus the designs are wild and fun, great music and cast with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it has a message and is funny! It is currently in theaters. #3 The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a perfect horror movie that is about tension, a brooding sense of evil, that again captured the “feel” of the Bram Stoker novel which I thought would never be possible.

The film expanded on the story, but events and characters were in line with Stoker’s tone. Also, presenting the character archetypes we know so well, the skeptical scientific guy, perfect for setting up who will be a victim. The visuals are stunning; the rain-soaked decks and the pale figure of Dracula in the darkness! Corey Hawkins as the ship’s medic is a great point of view character who uncovers what is happening with the ship! The movie is still playing in theaters.

So our top two, #2, you might have already guessed it, The Little Mermaid. The animated classic really launched Disney animation and is a great cinematic experience. The live action reached this high bar and surpassed it in certain ways. Musically, very strong in presenting the well known songs. Halle Bailey was stunning not only in her singing, but on screen charisma very much like what I see with the character of Ariel. Beautiful world building, again The Little Mermaid: Guide to Merfolk book gave details that the film could only offer a glimpse.

My favorite movies are memorable, I can flash through my memory of it to any scene, and also offering a world that I want to know more about which is Mermaid and also Demeter. It still in theaters and will stream on Disney+ on September 6th. This also applies to #1, The Magic Flute, I saw the brief scene in Amadeus, but this really introduced me to the full opera, but contemporary characters with a fantastic lead with Jack Wolfe, a funny performance by Iwan Rheon, and everything from themes of bullying, love, creativity, that is more than what I could expect. The Magic Flute is VOD at Amazon Prime, Applet TV, and Vudu. These are few of my favorites, are there films that are on your favorite list?
