West Side Story (2021) Review!

West Side Story is given a new coat of paint and updates to the story courtesy of the four leads and director Steven Spielberg!  The original musical was on Broadway in 1957, the new setting for Romeo and Juliet was concieved by theatrical director Jerome Robbins. He is known for his musicals, The King and I (1951) and later Fiddler on the Roof (1964).  Robbins was the co-director, but was fired halfway through filming, and choreographer for the 1961 West Side Story film.  The music is by Leonard Bernstein, the composer of On the Waterfront (1954) and of course the 1961 movie.  Bernstein is credited in the new movie and David Newman is the composer of the 2021 West Side Story.  The book, written story, was by Arthur Laurents who also wrote Gypsy (1959), another collaboration with Stephen Sondheim, this was his first Broadway musical.

Sondheim in a September 16th interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was disappointed with the original film saying, “I don’t think West Side Story’s a good movie at all because it’s not a movie.  It’s a photograph of a stage.”  He passed away on November 26th, but this film is a lasting tribute to his work, a tip of the cap.  Steven Spielberg is of course known for many popular and dramatic movies.  He had some song and dance numbers in his films including the “Anything Goes” number in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).  The cinematography is by frequent Spielberg collaborator, Janusz Kaminski, who first worked with him on Schindler’s List (1993).  There are some beautiful and cinematic shots in this movie, but also, minor point, strange arrangements like a closer shot of a dance number that doesn’t capture the sweep of the musical.  Others are closeup with characters talking off screen.

It may be the editing, there is the long time editor who works with Spielberg, Michael Kahn, and Sarah Broshar who worked with Spielberg on War Horse (2011).  The screenplay is by Tony Kushner, who also wrote the screenplay for Spielberg’s Munich (2005).  The film opens with the off screen whistle.  We start panning up from some rubble, then to a sign that says the area has been bought by the “New York Housing Authority for Slum Clearance”, next a billboard for the future Lincoln Center.  Construction of the Lincoln Center began in 1959 and completed in 1969.  Now it is the home of several well known performing arts organizations; the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera.  The construction is just a set up and not seen throughout the movie.  The young members of The Jets gang emerge from an underground hole and they contact their leader in a trailer.

Riff (Mike Faist) leaves the trailer with his girlfriend, Graziella (Paloma Garcia-Lee).  Faist was in the drama film, The Atlantic City Story (2020).  His Riff is loyal, a bit thin compared to other gang members, but the actor can sing since he was in the Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen.  Garcia-Lee was previously in the Fosse/Verdon (2019) mini-series, but her character is basically a cameo.  It’s really the same with most of the members of The Jets, their names don’t come up, but they are featured in one song.  The 1961 movie had more identifiable Jets and they are more fun characters, the Jets here are just punks and petty criminals.  They walk the streets, have to pause as black men and women cross the street, then steal what they want.  I do like that they occasionally break into dance, but this is brief.  The Jets pick up other members and then get paint cans.

They reach a court area with Puerto Rico flag artwork, pushing away Anybodys (Iris Menas), and begin to deface it with the paint.  Their rivals, The Sharks, enter and there is no dance fighting, it’s just fists until Baby John (Patrick Higgins) is captured.  He is given a vicious reminder.  This is when the police arrives; Officer Krupke (Brian d’Arcy James) and Lieutenant Schrank (Corey Stoll).  James plays Derek Bishop in the Hawkeye series.  Stoll was Junior Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark (2021).  They break up the gang fight and Schrank wants to know who hurt Baby John.  He is tough on The Jets, but the racism is clear with The Sharks.  He sends Bernardo (David Alvarez) and his gang away.  Alvarez was in the American Rust crime drama.  His Bernardo is a real leader caring about his gang members, but also works as a boxer.  Most of the gang members are boxers, meeting at a ring, so they would be tough fighters compared to the untrained Jets.

Bernardo returns to sing “La Borinqueña”, the national anthem of Puerto Rico.  This is the other part of the film, it has more Spanish than the first movie, but with no sub-titles in later important lines, I miss the emotional context.  The opening just shows the rivalry between the two great houses, pardon, gangs.  Later, Riff meets with his gang, says that he wants a rumble with the Sharks and Tony should be there.  Then, they sing the “Jet Song”, this ends at a quarry and fades to black, the transitions are just strange.  Tony is checking bottles at the basement, his room, of Doc’s drug store.  The character of Tony is more developed here, he was in prison for year, on his return Valentina hired him as a stock boy because she saw his potential.  Riff meets with Tony and wants him to go to the dance, but Tony doesn't want to break his parole.  His aggression is his weakness and wants to get away from any kind of violent life.  I read that Elgort can’t sing compared to his co-star and that is just foolish.  He is a singer who recorded several records.

Riff leaves and Tony walks up the steps to see the store owner, Valentina (Rita Moreno).  Moreno was of course Anita in the 1961 West Side Story and recently was Lydia Riera in remake comedy show, One Day at a Time.  Her character was once married to Doc and she serves his function as a neutral party to both gangs, but seems to not trust the thieving Jets.  They look at the reflection in the store’s floor and Tony sings, “Something’s Coming”, dancing a bit with Valentina!  Then, we get Maria (Rachel Zegler), a stunning debut for the actress.  Zegler has forthcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.  Maria is new to the country, she can’t be controlled by her older brother or really anyone else, and features Zegler’s soprano voice.  She is disappointed in her white dress for the dance.

Her roommate and Bernardo’s girlfriend is Anita (Ariana DeBose).  The actress was part of the ensemble in Hamilton and also Alyssa Greene in The Prom (2020).  Anita has her own independence as seen in the “America” number (which has a few changed lyrics), but of course loves Bernardo.  Anita decides to add her red bow to Maria’s dress which is identical to Natalie Wood’s dress in the 1961 movie, nice touch by costume designer Paul Tazewell.  Bernardo enters with the young man who will be Maria’s date, Chino (Josh Andrés Rivera).  This is also Rivera’s first movie.  Chino has a bit more development, he is going to trade school, and has potential so Bernando doesn’t want him to be a part of The Sharks.  They head over to the dance, open the doors, and we get the spectacle of the dance courtesy of Kaminski.  There is a swirl of dancers, lights, and a band.  Excellent choreography by Justin Peck using the Robbins dances, but giving it good energy.

The war council is at the bathroom, not at Doc’s, and they agree to the rumble.  Later, the rival dancers get pushy.  The conflict is broken up by Officer Krupke and the school principal.  Instead, the principal has the women circling the men, everyone is reluctant until Bernando leads out Anita.  Riff and Graziella follow.  The circle starts turning, but at the stop of the music, the dancers find they are matched with their rivals.  Anita breaks the tension calling for a mambo from the band.  Tony arrives greeted by Riff.  Maria and Chino step away from the dancers, but Chino eventually joins them.  Tony walks to the side of the dancers and sees Maria “across a crowded room”, yup it was Some Enchanted Evening.  She walks through the dancers and they meet behind the bleachers.  It is kinda awkward, but you can see the connection between them especially their dance.  This angers Bernardo and sows his hatred against Tony.  The balcony scene is a brilliant staging and the romance works there.  The emphasis of West Side Story is on the Puerto Rican characters which is good, mixed with the young love between Tony and Maria, and the inevitable battle between two gangs.  The original has its moments and flaws, the same with the current re-imagining, both are excellent entertainments and one is not superior to the other, but go see this West Side Story!

Video Game Review: Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge!

At Downtown Disney, there were banners for the VR Experience from Meta Quest 2, Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge.  This was a game platform created by ILMxLAB for Oculus Quest in 2020.  I had previously played Lightsaber Dojo which was from Vader Immortal (2019).  It of course connects to Galaxy’s Edge, the park expansion, that opened at Disneyland on May 31, 2019.  The VR Experience is at the former ESPN Zone.  It has a large stand that features Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge across from the building.  It is open until January 5, 2022.  The doors of the building has promotions for The Book of Boba Fett which previously up promoting Disney shows.  On that note, there is a photo op for the upcoming Boba Fett series, out on December 29th, next to the Star Wars Trading Post store.  It is the throne that Boba Fett sits on complete with Rancor head ornaments.

Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy’s Edge, Downtown Disney, photo by the author.

There is a large, trapezoid overhang hanging over the entrace, several cast members are there to ask questions and sign you up.  It is an iPad with a QR code which is basically a form to sign.  You are led past a wall ad of Meta Quest 2 before you lined up to the side.  It is a short wait, about 15 minutes or so, before you go to the eight or more glass rooms.  They have the promo artwork from the game, a table for santizing supplies, and the controllers.  You hold out your arms for the cast member to attach the two white controllers in your hands.  Then, you slip on the head visor, regular Oculus devices.  If you are not familiar with them, there is a small joystick for movement, the under button grabs items.  The forward trigger is used for your blaster.  Also, it provides 3D sound.

When you get the right set up, you start the game, this was at Oga’s Cantina.  The difference of course is that it is empty and a few aliens are there.  There is the bartender, Seezelslak, who is voiced by Bobby Moynihan.  He was provided voices for Star Wars: Resistance.  He is an Azumel, a species with multiple eyes, six, but looks like a cousin to Ree Yees from Jabba’s Palace.  They appeared in the video game, Star Wars: Force Arena (2017) and also Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) where Argus Panox was at the sabaac game.  There are some sabaac cards on a table, I could move them around, but I was more interested in the ronto wrap that was on the bar table.  Azumel is angry at someone and then chases out a porg around the bar.  He introduces himself and then Mubo enters, voiced by Matthew Wood, he is known for voicing General Grievous and several voices in Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales.

Mubo has googles on his forehead and owns the Droid Depot at Black Spire Outpost.  He is a blue Utai, the short humanoids with telescoping, black eyes from Utapau in Revenge of the Sith (2005). He is interested in you finding “the cargo.”  The floating droid R00-8Y, sprays pink mist at you, Mubo says it’s odor neutrailzer.  He sends to you coordinates for the crash site with the “special packages.”  You had previously tangled with the Guavian Death Gang and they are after the cargo too.  Mubo wants you to find them in the Batuu wilds outside of the outpost.  Mubo leaves and Seezelslak offers a drink so he can tell a story.  He mentions a Jedi Padawan and her “little green friend”, Yoda.  Sleezelslak wants you to find ingredients on your quest to complete the drink.  Next, you reach Three Suns Overlook which shows a canyon, the rocky spires, and Black Spire Outpost below you.  I had difficulty moving around and couldn’t find the crate of blasters.  So no combat for me.  Still, I was able to fill out a survey to get a water bottle and poster.

Hawkeye, “Partners, Am I Right?”, Review!

Last episode, Kate is at Eleanor’s house looking at Bishop Security to find what she can on Jack, Clint walks, and then gets the Ronin sword held to his throat by Jack!  Kate screams out to Jack who steps back with the sword still at Clint, then Eleanor walks in wondering about the Avenger.  Jack realizes who it is and calls him Archer.  At the dinner table, Kate explains she was working with Clint on a case.  Eleanor gets a text that her laptop was used and asks her daughter about it.  Kate and Clint get into a fun back and forth about working together.  Eleanor walks Clint to the elevator and brings up that Natasha Romanoff was good at the job, but not good enough, deep cut.  He promises her to keep Kate safe.

In the elevator, Clint texts his wife to check on Sloan Ltd.  Eleanor leaves a voice mail to a  mysterious person.  Clint calls Laura who tells him that the Tracksuit Mafia is working for Jack.  She also asks him in German if something else was missing from Avengers Compound like the Rolex.  The watch again which the Tracksuit Mafia was searching for in the first episode.   It really sounds Laura was a former S.H.I.E.L.D. intelligence agent, she understands her husband’s situation, can be trusted to track data in minutes, and may have retired to watch over the family.  Rumors have pointed to Mockingbird, Barbara Morse was in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. played by Adrianne Palicki, Hawkeye marries her in the comics. It could be that Mockingbird is just a S.H.I.E.L.D. alias assumed by both women.

Eleanor talks about Kate’s obsession with Hawkeye to Jack while Kate is on the nearby couch. She brings up the company party and dances with Jack.  Kate smiles at her rmother’s happiness.  At the apartment, Clint ties packs on his wounds, he buzzes in Kate who has brought pizza, Pizza Dog, and movies.  Kate uses a marker to lay out the players in the scheme.  Clint says he doesn’t make plans so Kate is the leader?  She brings up boomerang arrows and Clint shows her an aimed coin flick.  Kate practices and is able to do the trick.  Clint brings up the shot he didn’t take, attempting to kill Natasha, but he thought that didn’t want to be an assassin.  Kate realizes that he is the Ronin.  Clint tkes off his hearing aid and  goes over his time as Ronin and the death of Natasha.  In the morning, he says his is going to talk to Kazi while Kate finds the trick arrows with the LARPers.

He has tracked them and they are “training” while Kate walks with Pizza Dog.  Kate introduces herself and asks for help from Officer Wendy Conrad (Adetinpo Thomas).  She says that she needs to recover the trick arrows from a NYPD facility at Manhattan Bridge.  Kate has to agree to help the LARPers including Grills in exchange for the trick arrows. Kazi enters his truck at a used car lot.  Clint is in the back seat.  He knows that Kazi has been working for William Lopez and then Maya.  Clint warns Kazi about Maya’s vengeance against Ronin.  He returns to the apartment and sees the LARPers and Kate says the trick arrows are on the way. He gets a text from Laura that the Rolex was not destroyed, she has tracked it to a location, he is about to leave when Wendy enters with the trick arrows.

Night, Clint and Kate are watching an apartment from a rooftop.  He goes over the plan, but Kate is already walking across the street, so he advises her via the earpiece.  She changes his plan and helps an old man enter the building.  Kate reaches the door and lockpicks her way in.  Lights start flashing and Kate hits them with the goop arrows.  Clint says she is looking for a vintage watch that belonged to someone he worked with, which Avenger?  Kate finds the watch, it has the auction tag, and then she sees a note page with his family on it!  He tells her to get out of the apartment, it’s a silent alarm!  It’s Maya’s apartment!  Then, Kate hears fighting on the other line. Not much action until the end, but the dual fight scenes and stunning cameo are awesome!  Is this the breaking of the partnership?  Hawkeye has shown he can’t take on all of the threats alone.  Hawkeye idles a bit at the beginning, but brings back some fun characters and has good action!

Re:tro Re:view - Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zendar #2!

Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zendar #2 has more adventure with the alien world, Zendar, and our heroine, Victory Harbin involved in a deadly plot!  The cover by interior artist, Alessandra Rinaldi, has our hero, Victory, with her golden pistol next to the learge, fanged, white-coated Hucklebuck.  The script is by Mike Wolfer.  Catch up with the review: http://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/08/beyond-farthest-star-warriors-of-zendar.html.  The beginning has the pyramid-like Keelar Royal Palace which is at Kosaba, the island city.  Inside, is the throne room that has the bulky, Keelar guards and ruler, Korvakos, they look like their fanged faces jut from their chests.

A prisoner, a Ki-vaa tribe member, they are green-blue humanoids with black eyes, horns, and white hair, is brought to the throne room.  He is asked by the bearded Korvakos about how many are in his tribe.  The prisoner can’t answer and is struck by a guard.  He answers that Ki-Vaa count every person who ever lived, those who died, so they are beyond numbers.  Korvakos rages that the prisoner may not also how many there are of Zo-vaas, protectors.  The prisoner answers there is one.  Observing the city is Victory Harben, Hucklebuck, and Tii-Laa, the Ki-vaa female ally of Victory.  We see royal palace has a drawbridge; a ramp, a rotated platform and a ramp on the other side.

The ERB Universe titles have detailed worlds and people, things are identified, and even villains have a biology and culture.  Tii-Laa explains to Victory that the Keelars stay in the palace in the daytime.  Victory wonders about a frontal asault on the city while Tii-La leaps off the cliff.  The Ki-vaas are also aquatic with gills, so Victory works out a strategy.  She debates swimming to the central platform to find the controls.  Hucklebuck, now squirrel-size, scampers from Victory’s shoulder and starts to run off.  Victory chases after him.  Tii-La is swimming while Victory thinks over her journey bouncing from one world to the next one.  There are tentacles that reach out for her!  It some five tentacled monster that captures her leg, but Tii-La rips it with her claws.

Still, she is drawn in by the beast.  The tentacles loosen around Tii-La as another aquatic beast attacks the first one.  “There’s always a bigger fish”, as Qui-Gonn said in The Phantom Menace (1999).  Hucklebuck reaches the end of the ramp and then enlarges to rhino-size.  He angrily blurts at Victory in his singing voice.  Victory mounts him and Hucklebuck jumps across the platforms!  He goes back to squirrel-size. The palace doors open and Keelar guards rush out!  Tii-La emerges from the river water and uses her claws to climb the palace walls.  She leaps down on the other side.  The guards are confused about Victory and she pulls out her pistol which stuns the guard who has seen its power.

Victory is asked if she is “One from Above.”  She agrees and the guards line up and honor her with their right arms lifted up. She is accompanied by the guards who mention another “One from Above” who helped the designs of their city.  Victory stops the narrative to go over the eleven planets of the Omos system including Poloda.  It was visited by Tangor in the Edgar Rice Burroughs in Beyond the Farthest Star (1964).  The special restored version is available from https://edgarriceburroughs.com/store/product/beyond-the-farthest-star-restored-edition/.  Victory mentions meeting Tangor, but that is a tale she mentions for another time, hmm, I wonder where will we see that one?

She goes on to think that Poloda developed interplanetary travel, but not the planet Banos so the tech did not reach every planet.  Victory tries to ask the guard if the other traveler was Tangor, but the guard says he was like “smoke in the air.”  Victory is asked if she is there to see “The Gift.”  She is shown a device, a chamber, three Ki-vaa prisoners are lead to the chamber.  One enters the chamber and is drained of life!  Nice close-up of Victory’s eye with the reflection of the dying prisoner!  Victory has her pistol out, the “uncertainity” gun, great action close-up!, and the Keelar guards run.  Then, we get a fight with Ti-Laa against several Keelars that she defeats.  Ti-Laa asks about the Go-Vaas, we saw in the first issue, that is the bodies of the Ki-Vaa who must be taken to a pool.  Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zendar wanders further into this strange world, what is The Gift?, and what is its connection to the other visitor of Zendar?

L.A. Comic Con - Last Day!

There were some changes this year for the L.A. Comic Con, but it was a mix of great experiences and tired feet!  The convention started in 2011 as the Comikaze Expo.  It became Stan Lee’s Comikaze in 2012.  Later, it became the L.A. Comic Con and still remained at the Los Angeles Convention Center.   I worked at the 2016 con and I think most likely I have not attended since that time.  The change I noticed, picking up badges was in the next building, I remember it was in the hall so you just take the escalator to the con floor.  The other part was of course expected, your vaccine card (or negative test) was shown with your i.d. before you enter the hall for badges.

L.A. Comic Con, Show Floor, photo by the author.

Next, it was great that there were piles of hand sanitizing wipes, so it is easy to clean your hands, much easier than hand sanitizing pumps that usually run out.  I hope all cons can have something similar.  The other part was confusing for me, my autograph ticket reads, “Sun, Dec 5, 2021” that also read “at 4:00 p.m.”  So I expected that would be the time.  Wrong.  The signings were all day and when I got there before 4 p.m., two of three signing celebrities were gone.  It doesn’t read the con opening, 9:30 a.m. to the last time, 4 p.m.  So I’m trying for my refund.  Remember that no convention guarantees you will get an autograph, but I think the ticket must make the times more clear.  I also didn’t get much help from information who thought my tickets were for Friday.

The convention was primarily in South Hall and the West Hall.  I think the entrance once you get your badge is by Kentia Hall that featured video games.  So it was a walk to South Hall which passes the autograph and photo op area, crowded, I didn’t see any tables to ask questions about the autograph tickets.  Then, the South Hall is expansive, I walked around, no paper maps or signs.  I found out that you have to download the app for schedules and maps, less information than the usual con maps.  I will say ATMs were easily assessible and found in many locations.  So my objective was really to make my sweep around Artist’s Alley.  Also, I have to note that I only went today, Sunday, but really needed to go at least another day to get the layout and not try to pack everything in a limited time.  I mentioned this before, but I usually go to get my Hero Initiative 100 Project books signed.

Cosplayer, Joanie Brosas, at her table, photo by the author.

In this case, it was about four books, you get some fantastic artwork signed by artists you know and some that may be new for you.  It’s also fun to find the artists and walk around Artist’s Alley.  You can find the books at the Hero Initiative table at cons or check their website: https://www.heroinitiative.org/merchandise/.  Also remember that whatever you buy, it’s a worthy cause helping comic creators in need.  I got a watercolor sketch from Agnes Grabowska, recommended for anyone who likes original art.  Remember that many artists have art prints, I like smaller artwork that I can easily carry around.  I picked up a special edition of Spider-Girls’ first appearance and the new comic book, The R.I.G.H.T. Project #1 from the classic duo of Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz.  There was a great display of cars; Ecto-1X with Slimer in front, the Nascar Herbie, and the Pizza Planet truck.

It was great to visit the Edgar Rice Burroughs booth, I picked up the novel, Swords Against the Moon Men (2017).  The author, Christopher Paul Carey was there and answered some questions.  I was able to meet with actress Jackie Dallas at her table, she was Jen in Stranger Things and a news reporter in the “Mother” (2021) episode of Fear the Walking Dead.  Don’t worry if you missed her at the con, she is also on the guest list for Comic Con Revolution, along with many special guests!  It is on the weekend of December 18th and 19th.  Check out details here: https://www.comicconrevolution.com/ontario/.  I also saw cosplayer Ivy Doomkitty, cosplaying as Stay Puft Marshmellow Woman!, always fun to catch up with her.  A cosplayer that I just saw at that con was Joanie Brosas, she was dressed as Chun Li, and modeled for covers of Vampirella and Red Sonja.  L.A. Comic Con offered some fun meeting with artists, writers, and cosplayers!

Hawkeye, “Echoes”, Review!

Last episode ended with a big reveal, the Tracksuit Mafia member, Ivan, goes to report the capture of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop.  He says this to Echo (Alaqua Cox), a character who first appeared in Daredevil #9 (1999).  This is her first acting role and she has her own series, Echo, spinning off from this show.  In 2007, we see an unhappy, young girl (Darnell Besaw) hearing the muted sounds of her classmates.  She reads the lips of her teacher (Sissi Kal), wearing a hijab, and turns to a page in her school book to fill it out.  The teacher walks up to her desk and gets Maya’s attention and mentions something about an interpreter.

Maya Lopez has completed the page, the teacher is surprised, and smiles.  Later, Maya and her father , William Lopez (Zahn McClarnon) are making shadow puppets on her wall.  She signs to her father about the sounds of the sky and dragons.  He answers her while signing.  The father says dragons come from another world, he must have seen Shang-Chi.  She asks why she isn’t in a deaf school, but her father answers that he wants her in that school so she can move through two worlds.  Later, we get Maya watching a larger boy take on a sparing partner at a dojo.  Maya is watching his hands and stance.

The boy easily throws down his partner impressing the class.  William tells her daughter to use speed and than leaves her to be watched over by her uncle.  The instructor brings up Maya, the boy notices her prosthetic right leg.   Her opponent just can’t believe he is sparring with her.  She spins around him and knocks the boy down.  Then, we get the older Maya (Cox) in a boxing ring, her prostethic leg is easily seen.  She strikes her new opponent with her prosethtic leg and several fist strikes.  Maya sees her new opponent’s hands and then painfully throws him back with an “I see you” sign.  At a Fat Man auto repair, Maya climbs off her motorcycle.

She sees some movement and slips to the side of the building seeing Ronin cut down people with his sword.  She kicks in a door, but only sees dead men.  The Ronin shatters a window and Maya rushes to see her father stabbed!  We saw in the first sign that Clint signs to his younger son, maybe due to his hearing problem, but we can see also the connection with Echo.  He signs for her to go and then dies, Maya hugs him.  It is morning when we then shift back to the building, KB Toys, where Kate Bishop and Clint Barton were captured and tied to coin operated rocking horses.  The Tracksuit Mafia members mock the duo.

The horses run down and the Tracksuit guys move on.  Clint explains he was trying to clear her name from the Ronin when she broke in from the window and got captured.  Maya walks down the steps with Kazi. She cuts free Clint’s tape that bound him to the unicorn.  He signs that he is hard of hearing, but doesn’t know more signs.  Kazi steps in as interpreter.  Clint explains that Maya put on the suit by accident.  Maya signs that Kate beat up some of her men and is involved.  Clint says Ronin is dead and that his killer is… Black Widow.

He says he saw her kill Ronin.  Maya puts her arm to Kate’s throat, but is stopped by Kazi.  Clint has sawed the tape binding his arms and then runs off.  The Tracksuit Mafia searches for him, Clint evades them, but is knocked around by Maya.  She kicks him and knocks out the hearing aid before stepping on it.  Clint leaps through a window to take up his bow and Maya takes the other one.  Kazi holds his gun on Kate.  Clint looses two arrows that pins Maya to a wall.  Then, leaps off the top floor to loose one arrow that slices Kazi’s cheek and severs the tape holding Kate while he leaps into a ball pit.  Kate Bishop is finally able to prove her worth here and in the chase scene.

She fights with Kazi as Clint is efficient taking out Tracksuit Mafia guys with his bow.  Kate slides in knocking down tough guys, but Kazi is knocked out by Clint.  They race to find a getaway car.  Clint hotwires it and can only hear Kat in muffled sounds.  The Tracksuit Mafia bursts out of the door.  We get a tracking shot that looks like it is done in one take; swinging from guys trying to bash the car, Clint driving away while a window shatters by a bullet.  The green Trust a Bro moving van has gunmen in the back and then Kate takes the bow.  Clint says he has run out of regular arrows, pulls out a few arrows from the quiver, and Kate takes one to loose at a pursuing car.  It sends purple bubbles that goops up the windowshield.

Clint sends the car spinning to drive in reverse.  Kate looses another arrow that blows up the van!  Maya drives her red `77 Dodge Challenger that Clint passed up.  Another trick arrow from Kate, but it just sticks to the window!  Clint swerves into a Christmas tree lot.  The goopy car driven by Kazi follows them.  Kate’s arrow hits his front grill and lashes out lines that draw in the Christmas trees!  In all of the seasons of Arrow, there really wasn’t a goofy trick arrow scene.  Clint gives Kate two acid arrows to bring down street lights, but Maya veers past them.  Ivan has his gun out next to Clint’s car, but has to struggle against Clint.

Kate takes back her bow from Maya’s car and looses an arrow that sends purple gas flooding Maya’s car.  She crashes the car.  There is traffic and Clint spins the car to a stop sideways.  He has Kate loose an arrow into the air and then strikes it with an arrow that must have a Pym particle since the arrow enlarges to torpedo size and severs Kazi’s car.  Clint races to get the arrow from the Challenger as Kate looses the trick arrow that just bounces off Ivan’s chest!  The duo leaps off the bridge as the Tracksuit Mafia open fires on them.  Clint’s arrow attaches to a part of the bridge and they swing to a subway train!  He uses the plunger arrow to hold onto it as the train races away.  On the train, Clint says that Kate is one of the greatest archers.

At her apartment, he puts a bag of frozen vegetables on his neck and then gets a phone call from his family.  He can’t hear so Kate tries to write down what Nathaniel is saying.  Nathaniel says it is ok if he isn’t there for Christmas.  Clint says he will be there.  A nice moment with his family, but also between Clint and Kate.  At the warehouse, the Tracksuit Mafia is clearing out so Kazi signs to Maya, he brings up that her uncle is involved with the gang.  Mysterious at this point.  Jack?  Directors Bert and Bertie have ramped up the pace for this show!  Hawkeye has finally found its footing with some intense action, finally, good dramatic moments, and a nice dash of humor!

Wonder Woman 2021 Annual Review!

Wonder Woman 2021 Annual has a new threat for Amazons that also threatens Wonder Woman!  It has a stunnig cover by Mitch Gerards of a girl in the same pose as a Wonder Woman painting in a museum. This seems to be a spin off of Wonder Woman #25 (2008) which had on girl posing as Wonder Woman on a poster against a wall.  “The Exhibition” is by the writing team of Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan.  Andy MacDonald is the artist who also worked on Wonder Woman #774.  It opens at the National Gallery of Art which is at the National Mall.  Etta Candy is on a bench checking her phone when a stranger asks about a “timekeeper device.”  He is a pale man, in a black suit with sunglasses.  I’m getting shades of Paul Bettany’s Silas in The da Vinci Code (2006).  Etta, is of course kind to strangers, and offers him to sit on the bench.  He calls himself Altuum and his eyes beneath the sunglasses are pink.

This moves to a bank with police cordoning off a hostage situation, Wonder Woman walks up to an officer to get the situation, and then has them wait for her signal.  She brings up her shield to block gunfire along with her bracelets.  The masked robers react to Wonder Woman on the scene and open fire on her.  She shatters the door and gives them a warning.  Wonder Woman loops her lasso around a machine gun which slams into the temple of another robber.  Ouch!  One of the gunmen surrenders and another is about to shoot him, but Wonder Woman lassos him.  Back at the bench, Altuum calls himself the “Sole survivor.”  Akin to a vengeful Superman.  Then, Etta gets a call from work.  A gunman with a scuba google and ski mask is about to shoot the hostages.  A Zack Snyder’s Justice League situation. He points the machine gun barrel at a woman’s head and then shoots in a red panel.

Wonder Woman has pulled the woman away with her lasso and deflects the bullets with her shield.  She throws the shield at his face, note that Wonder Woman has incredible strength, even holding back this could put him in the hospital for weeks.  The last robber shoots, but Wonder Woman still strikes the gunman’s face, weeks?, it would be a month.  The robber tries to surrender, but Wonder Woman says the time for mercy has already ended.  The police get their signal with the bodies of the robbers are tossed to the street.  Wonder Woman turns over hostage medical attention to the police.  Etta meets with Diana, now in a red dress, adn tehy head to the museum, but Etta has a call to return to work.  Diana sees the reflection of Altuum in the door.  Inside, the exhibition, “Themyscira Through a Lifting Fog.”  The artwork and displays look fascinating, I’m hoping something maybe small scaled shows up at a con or display for the third Wonder Woman movie.

The tour group enjoys the docent’s presentation.  I would think there would be some interactive displays and ways for young girls or women to learn the Amazon ways.  The docent shows a large print of the first photograph of Wonder Woman that she says is blurry, it should be black and white.  The flattery embarrasses Diana and she moves away from the group to talk to Altuum.  He knows she is Diana.  Altuum hints that he has been on the island.  This opens to a two panel splash of Themyscira, with a large, walled city, very Minas Tirith with a circular tower in the center, mountains, a temple area in the center, and another city at the other end of the island.  Altuum says his people where underwater north of the Isle of Healing.  He tells her that he was waiting for Diana to die since he says he can defeat all of the other Amazons!  Altuum hints at a war that will have “sister against sister.”  This all is leading to “Trail of the Amazons”?

This is a back and forth with Altuum and Diana, he insults and brings up her mother, until Diana activates the fire alarm to evacuate the building.  It’s on!  Altuum brings up his people, the Enki, this immediately made me think of Enkidu, the wild man helper to the mythological Gilgamesh.  Actually, Enki is the Sumerian Lord of the Earth, this would displace them with the Greek gods. Diana tosses the bag and her sandals to give Altuum a right cross.  This is not held back, this is a full force punch.  He kicks her striking Diana’s collar bone and sending her smashing into a wall.  Diana later says that Altuum was holding back, he ends the conflict in a dangerous way.  At a cafe, Etta and Diana talk, it’s gotta be Etta going to Themyscira.  Diana gets a text from Altuum that sends her to Themyiscra for another battle.  I think he wants the Amazons see him defeat their champion on her own ground.

Star Wars Adventures Annual 2021 Review!

This year’s IDW Star Wars annual sees the return of the Hoojibs!  They first appeared in Star Wars #55 (1977).  The cover is by Arianna Florean, the interior artist, with Jaxxon, the green rabbitoid (a Lepi) chased out of the spotlight!  Jaxxon appeared to this SW continuity in Star Wars Adventures Annual 2018 from Cavan Scott and Mauricet.  He made his debut in Star Wars #8 (1977) when the comic book took up its own adventures with Luke, Han, and Chewbacca. Jaxxon was part of the Star-Hoppers of Aduba-3 who took on the raiding Cloud-Riders.  They made it into canon with Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).  The first story, “The Hoojib Menace” is by written by Cavan Scott, who also pens the Star Wars: The High Republic comic for Marvel.  Florean has a cartoony art style, but can also handle the starships and SW action!

It starts off with a splash page of the Millennium Falcon tailed by several TIE fighters, open with straight starship action, nice!  There is a blue planet below them.  Han is on the rear cannon while talking to Chewie about working for Jabba the Hutt.  He is not too concerned about the TIE fighters.  They should be launched from a large starship, but the fighters seem local, maybe from the planet.  Han brings up finding a pet to add to Jabba’s menagerie.  He says he heard of a Nimbanel trader from the Bon’nyuw-Luq sector.  The Nimbanel were an early rendition of Jabba in the comics.  They became canon in the Clone Wars animated series with “Sphere of Influence” (2010).  The sector seems to have an Irish connection, Bonny Loch?, luck? look?, I’m guessing the yuw is like ewe, the female sheep? Han destroys the last TIE fighter and they are on their way to the sector.

They land on the planet Abra, a planet with forests, the trader is checking on boxes before a cave.  The Nimbanel has a bald head, small, walrus-like cheeks and two hair braids from the end of this chin.  This is Bralem Mopak.  He tries to entice Han with a waiting list for the creature for three months.  Bralem has several bulky, bodyguard droids.  He hears Han mention Jabba and gives him a box free of charge.  Chewie growls that this is too good to be true, Han should have listened.  At Jabba’s Palace at the pit, the Rancoer is fighting the praying mantis-like Acklay.  A translator droid talks to a trader named Keradd, he is a Gotal, the furred alien with two horns, seen in the cantina.  They are working on an alliance when Han bursts in with his creature box.  It is apparent that he hasn’t opened this box.  In a splash page, Han, smiling opens the box.

The expressions of Chewie, arms crossed with a guarded look, and the Gamorrean guard’s surprise, is priceless. Out of the box, the Hoojib hops out, a rabbit-like creature with an antennae.  It makes a whining, “Yi-Yi-Yi” sound.  Jabba is not happy, but the trader likes the Hoojib.  He slaps away the Hoojib with Han and Chewie sent away.  At the docking bay, IG-88 and some of Jabba’s men try to take them back to Jabba.  Han blasts a Nikto, but they are caught by IG-88’s electrified cables.  They hang upside down in front of Jabba who wants to know who hired them.  The Hutt gangster says his deal with Keradd ended the moment they left.  The power suddenly goes out with Chewie and Han falling to the floor.  They try to escape, but IG-88 throws a flash bang-like device.  The duo is thrown into Jabba’s prison cell.

The Hoojib finds them and then feeds on the wires of the cell door.  Han discovers the Hoojib named Plif and help him with Bralem Mopak to keep the Hoojib from acting as his spies wth criminal leaders!  This is a fun story bringing back the Hoojib.  It seems like all of the fun parts of the early Star Wars Marvel comic.  The second story, “The Coin”, is by Chip Zdarksy and co-written by Jason Loo who is also the artist.  It has a trio of young thieves; Venraya and younger kids, Traff, an Ugnaught kid, and Moxxin, taking a Canto Bight coin from the criminal Wonn Ionstrike.  This is on Cloud City so it may get the interest of a certain Baron Administrator.  Star Wars Adventures Annual 2021 is a welcome return for the Hoojibs, just fun adventures!
