Star Trek vs. Transformers #4 Review!

We are getting close to the end of the battle of Cygnus Seven.  John Barber and Mike Johnson are writing the mini-series and Philip Murphy is providing the art.  The cover by Priscilla Tramontano has the classic Enterprise bridge scene encountering Optimus Prime.  Usually it is a villain so maybe Trypticon or Megatron?  Last issue, we had Kirk taking control of Fortress Maximus in Enterprise form.  He takes on the Decepticons as he dubs himself Fortress Tiberius.  Kirk has to struggle with Fortress Maximus taking over and he is supported by Ratchet.  Bumblebee with M’Ress and Jazz are on the planet.  McCoy warns Kirk that his fighting is rocking the insides with the miners.  Spock reminds him that he can’t take life, but Fortress Tiberius blasts Trypticon anyway.  The Klingon captain, Kuri, worries about the battle to Starscream.  On Windblade, Sulu is scanning the Decepticons.  Starscream is in the mine and discovers the Dilithium Crystals!   The Autobots transform into the robot form and Windblade has them duck under the attack of Trypticon.  Sulu reminds Jazz about his comment about humans being small to Trypticon’s size.

Starscream in jet form leaves with the Dilithium Crystals and uses the Klingon cloak to escape.  Optimus Prime rages and fires on the Klingons!  Optimus Prime takes this occasion to attack Megatron with his energy axe, but he is already weak.  Trypticon blasts Fortress Tiberius and Kirk feels the pain!  Jazz takes on Megatron during the battle.  Kirk struggles to keep his identity while plugged into Fortress Maximus.  He is able to regain his identity.  Megatron calls for Trypticon to transform into the Klingon bird-of-prey to pursue Starscream.  Spock, transported to the planet, Sulu and M’Ress take the Klingons into custody.  Kirk/Fortress Tiberius has detected Starscream and M'Ress wonders about the Enterprise.  The Federation ship via Lt. Uhura is trying to contact the landing party with Arex in command.  The Enterprise is without impulse engines or warp drive, basically drifting in space.  Uhura gets a transmission, it is the Enterprise!  Really Fortress Tiberius with Kirk in the captain’s chair.  He transports over Windblade, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Jazz to help with the repairs.  Then, sends M’Ress, Sulu, and Spock.  His First Officer reminds him that they can’t invade Klingon space to pursue Starscream.  While, Megatron is pursuing Starscream in the Trypticon bird-of-prey to his destination, Kronos!  There is no new characters, the battle expands from Cygnus Seven, but nothing too surprising.  The other Autobots and Starfleet officers should be added at this time.

Four Dilithium Crystals and Energon Cubes out of Five!

Happy Birthday James Earl Jones!

Happy Birthday James Earl Jones!  He is one of the most distinctive baritone of a voice which he turned to acting to control his stutter. One of his first film roles was Dr. Strangelove (1964).  Jones is an accomplished stage actor,  winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for The Great White Hope in 1969.  He took the part of Jack Johnson along with co-star Jane Alexander, from the stage to film with The Great White Hope (1970).  Jones  played Lennie on Broadway in Of Mice and Men (1974).  He of course provided the voice for Darth Vader in Star Wars (1977) and starred in Exorcist II: The Heretic also that year.  James Earl was the villainous Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian (1980).  His voice was also heard again as Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and then Return of the Jedi (1983).  An iconic role was his Tony Award winning performance in August Wilson’s Fences (1987) as Troy Maxson.  This is my favorite part he played.  One of his interesting roles was in the comedy Coming to America (1988) playing King Jaffe Joffer.  The following year, he was Terence Mann In Field of Dreams

In 1990, Jones starred as Admiral Greer in the Hunt for Red October.  Also that year, Jones won an Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries for his role as Junius Johnson in Heatwave (1990).  He was Gabriel Bird in the tv drama Gabriel’s Fire (1990-1991), in 1991, he won an Emmy for Best Actor for the show.   Jones returned as Admiral Greer in Patriot Games (1992).  He had another great role as Mr. Mertle in The Sandlot (1993).  Then, he was Earnest Moses in the superhero comedy The Meteor Man (1993).  Another iconic role for Jones was as the voice of Mufasa in the Disney animated film,  The Lion King (1994).  He was also Franklin Stern in a 1994 episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.  Next, Jones returned as Admiral Greer in Clear and Present Danger (1994). Jones was the voice of Unas in the “Thor’s Hammer” (1997) episode of Stargate SG-1.  In 2002, Jones was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors.   He was back on Broadway in 2008 starring in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  Jones played himself in “The Convention Conundrum” (2014) of The Big Bang Theory.  He returned to voice Mufasa in The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar (2015) and also Darth Vader in a few episodes of Star Wars: Rebels.  Jones also back as Mufasa in the live action Lion King and we can’t wait for him to be king!  It will be out on July 19th!  Happy Birthday James Earl Jones!

Happy Birthday John Carpenter!

Happy Birthday John Carpenter!  He worked on The Resurrection of Bronco Billy (1970) as co-writer, editor, and composter.  Then, Carpenter directed and co-wrote the sci fi film Dark Star (1974).  What became iconic was Halloween (1978) which he directed, co-wrote with producer Debra Hill, and scored.  The film made Michael Myers a horror icon with seven sequels with different directors and two remakes.  It also made Laurie Strode played by Jamie Lee Curtis into another icon, a female able to stand against the horror.  Carpenter worked again with Curtis on The Fog (1980) that also starred Adrienne Barbeau who has to encounter a ghostly ship.  It was remade in 2005.  Carpenter followed it up with the sci fi action film, Escape from New York (1981) with Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken who has to enter Manhattan which is now a dystopian prison.  He teamed up with Russell again in the remake of the sci fi The Thing (1982) with effects by Rob Bottin.  It was the first film in what Carpenter calls his Apocalypse Trilogy.  Carpenter cast Jeff Bridges as the alien taking the form of a departed husband in Starman (1984), a charming, sci fi romance that led to a 1986 television series.

The second movie in the Apocalypse Trilogy is Prince of Darkness (1987).  Carpenter brought his sensibility to the sci fi horror movie, They Live (1988) starring Roddy Piper, a fun movie.  He wears sunglasses to discover skull-like aliens controlling everything.  In 1992, John Carpenter directed Memoirs of an Invisible Man inspired by the H.F. Saint novel. Carpenter worked with Tobe Hooper on the 1993 horror anthology series Body Bags.  The last movie of the Apocalypse Trilogy was In the Mouth of Madness (1994) with a script by Michael De Luca.  The film captures the atmosphere ofand Thomas Ian Griffith.   H.P. Lovecraft's work.   He returned to the adventures of Snake Plissken with Escape from L.A. (1996).  Then, he directed Vampires (1998) and then the sci fi horror movie Ghosts of Mars (2001).   Next, Carpenter directed episodes of the horror anthology Masters of Horror.  In 2014, photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker released her book, On Set with John Carpenter.  Carpenter created the comic book series John Carpenter’s Asylum along with his wife Sandy King and Thomas Ian Griffith. He released his first album, Lost Themes in 2015, then Lost Themes II (2016), and then Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998.  Carpenter was executive producer, helped compose the score, and was creative consultant on last year’s Halloween which ignored the sequels.  Happy Birthday John Carpenter!

Star Wars: Resistance, “Bibo”, Review!

Season one continues with the twelfth episode!  At the hangar of the Colossus Base, Kaz and Neeku see Synara bring up a hovercraft with parts for the Fireball.  It is as if the battle from the last episode never happened.  Kaz identifies the ship.  They are distracted by the noise from a slimy creature that attaches to Kaz’s lunch container.  Neeku pulls it away and considers it like his childhood pet, naming it Bibo.  The name sounds like Beebo in Legends of Tomorrow or Bilbo without the “L.”  Torra Doza had a pet, Buggles, a voorpak who was in the “Secrets and Holograms” episode, so this is just expanded and made silly.  Tam complains besides the smell, Bibo eats engine parts, and attempts to eat Bucket.  Yeager enters and reminds his crew not to have pets.  He warns Neeku that if Bibo escapes he has to leave.  Synara is contacted via holo with Kragan, the pirate captain, that the pilots are from the Resistance.  Kaz interrupts them and she tells him the holo was just another salvage client.  Synara takes Kaz on a salvaging run.  He seems to fall for her similar to his friendship with Jace.

STAR WARS: RESISTANCE -- “Bibo” -- Disney/Lucasfilm.

Bibo has escaped the box again and makes chaos in the hangar.  Yeager discovers this and sends it away, but Neeku will leave with it.  Tam runs after them.  At sea, Synara’s hovercraft floats over the water, Kaz is tired, she asks about the identity of the pilots.  She shuts down the hover lift engines and a massive sea creature is underneath them headed to Colossus Base!  A giant creature causing problems like the giant lizard monkey in “Signal from Sector Six”?  Did someone get paid for writing this episode?  Tam goes to check on Neeku at the platform above the ocean.  He collapses in tears.  She gets a comm from Yeager about Engineering.  He runs off to Engineering.  The hovercraft is following the creature and it’s giant tentacle comes crashing down.  Neeku gets help from the Chelidae, ok, not a great appearance, but this saves this episode from a lower score.  The Children of Tehar have found Bibo.  She wonders about them and Kel says that his sister, Ella, has dreamed of something coming.  Ella points out that the creature is coming for Bibo and the whole station is in danger.  This is similar to the Sando Aqua monster in the Forces of Destiny episode, “Monster Misunderstanding.”

Synara lands her hovercraft and Kaz tries to scream out a warning, but is ignored.  Security droids attempt to arrest them for causing a panic.  Captain Doza scrambles the aces to protect the base.  Tentacles probe the station.  Synara is able to close the station doors.  Hype and the other Aces are taking on the creature.  Tam and Neeku see the tentacle.  Yeager has readied the Fireball for Kaz.  He has Kaz fly to protect Bibo.  It’s head turns and we can obviously see it is related to Bibo.  Hype tries to send Kaz away.  Bibo makes mournful sounds.  Jace wants it sent away.  Captain Doza authorizes missiles to strike the creature.  The Aces wound the creature, but Griff’s ship is damaged.  Neeku refuses to let go of Bibo, the creature’s eye sees Bibo, and he calls off the attack.  Kaz tries to convince Hype and he agrees to stop the Aces from firing on the creature.  Neeku says his goodbye to Bibo.  Kaz gives Neeku a new pet, worrt, but Neeku doesn’t consider it a pet.  The Bibo species is never identified, but it is known as a Rokkna native to Castillon in StarWars.com facts.  Strange that the Colossus Base explorers never scanned the oceans properly.  The ideas for this episode are completely unoriginal, but I did like the cameo by the Chelidae, and the characters throughout Season One.  This is new to have a Neeku-centered episode, but still no direction for the series, spy?, racer? (kinda for Kaz here), or Resistance effort against the First Order?

Archie Meets Batman `66 #6 Review!

The last issue of this comic crossover features a Mike Allred cover with Batman catching hold of Archie in the Batcopter from the Batman (1966) movie.  There is a fiery R, Riverdale that is burning on a dark hill.  It is written by Jeff Parker and Michael Moreci with pencils by Dan Parent.  The opening page gives readers an update like the Batman television show!   Our heroes pull away in the Batboat with Batman tied up.  The villain revel in their victory and to the cheers of the Riverdale citizens under the control of Siren.  Even worse, is the Joker swerving around in the Batmobile!  At Archie’s house, the heroes are sad at Batman’s sacrifice.  Jughead cheers up the gang’s spirit with a plate of Bat Burgers, I would like a nice, juicy Bat Burger.  Reggie has one of the Siren Eggs used to control the adults.  Dilton Doiley says he needs a supercomputer to modify it.  His messenger goes off and he realizes it’s Batman.

Batman sends back that there is a supercomputer in the trunk of the Batmobile, but the Joker is driving it now!  They need a distraction and Archie has a plan.  Riddler and Catwoman are dancing in celebration, they are interrupted by what the Riddler thinks is the Batmobile, but it is really the roadster that Archie was working on in issue #1.  Out of it, leaps Betty in red superhero suit with heart ST, Superteen? (Betty’s identity in Archie’s Super Teens), symbol.  The trio of Riddler, Catwoman, and the Penguin are stunned.  Then, a splash page of the heroes racing from the car, Jughead with purple suit with burger symbol (Jughead’s Super Teen identity is Captain Hero, Veronica with multicolored dress, mask, and cape, her identity as Miss Vanity, then Reggie with green suit, mask, and E symbol, Evilheart is Reggie’s Super Teen identity.  Another splash page as the heroes take down townspeople including Betty and Batgirl, throwing kicks at the same time while the Joker is stunned.

While the fight goes on, Reggie with PH, Pureheart the Powerful!, orange suit and Dilton with colander on his head, head to the Batmobile, and Archie announces he is going to save Batman.  I like seeing the Super Teens with the Batman heroes.  Batman admires Robin’s fighting.  Archie frees Batman who is a master escape artist, some rope really can’t stop him, but we see the heroes surrounded.  The Joker is happy and then he is interrupted.  Batman KO’s the Joker, The Penguin leads the counter attack, Captain Hero checks on Dilton.  He has set up the Siren Eggs through the Batcomputer.  Plus, we get Bargirl’s kick taking out Catwoman and Siren!  Batman choke holds Riddler.  Robin kicks Penguin and the Joker finds Dilton has broken the Siren’s song so all of the Riverdale adults have turned against them!  Now, we see the adults of Riverdale getting justice, Sheriff Keller has Joker in handcuffs while his son cheers him on, Principal Weatherbee bashes Penguin with a sign, and Catwoman gets an earful from Miss Grundy.  The parents apologize to their kids.  There is of course one last thing from this crossover that is missing.  It is there at the last page also a splash page, the Batusi!  A great end to a fun comic from beginning to end!  Great work by Parker, Moreci, and Parent!

Bird Box Review!

Birdboxing, blindfolding persons to perform stunts, is the new Youtube sensation inspired from the Birdbox film currently streaming off of Netflix.  The film was released on December 13, 2018 and directed by Susanne Bier.  She directed In a Better World (2010), the Danish film, that won the Best Foreign Language Film.  The screenplay is by Eric Heisserer who also wrote the screenplay for Arrival (2016).  It is based on the novel by Josh Malerman.  The film opens over a river cutting through a forest while a voice says there is safety in a community.  Then, we get a closeup of Sandra Bullock’s character, Malorie Hayes, warning her children, a boy (Julian Edwards) and a girl (Vivien Lyra Blair), about the river trip even though the radio voice said it would be dangerous for kids.  Bullock also serves as executive producer for the movie.   There is also the music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, they won the Academy Award for The Social Network (2010),, the duo worked on Jonah Hill’s film Mid90s.  She tells them not to make noise or take off their blindfolds.  The situation is similar to A Quiet Place, but in this case, to not only speak, but not to see. Malorie takes her two birds from their cage into a box.  Blindfolded they make their way to string, Malorie carries the girl, the boy holds her side.  She uncovers a boat that was hidden and puts the kids inside to push it to the river.   We get a flashback of five years with Malorie painting. Jessica Hayes, her sister, is played by Sarah Paulson and she points out that the emergency is on the news.  Paulson is known for American Horror Story, and last year was in Ocean’s Eight with Bullock. Mass suicides are breaking out that started in Romania.  Malorie’s painting has people who are lonely.  Jessica fears that Malorie will be lonely even though she is going to have a baby.  Of course, it seems like Jessica is not in the future.

Dr. Lapham (Parminder Nagra) checks on the baby, Malorie doesn’t seem eager for the baby, and Dr. Lapham gives her a pamphlet about adoption.  Malorie starts walking down the hospital corridor and the woman she saw earlier is bashing her head against a window until she is bloody.  She runs to the car, Malorie explains to her sister that the Russian plague is here.  Jessica wants to go to her place in Santa Rosa, away from people, they are surrounded by the chaos of people.  She gets the red eyed glare and starts driving recklessly so Malorie tries to get the jeep under control.  It flips over and Jessica walks into the street.  Malorie has to escape, she’s on the street, when a woman, Lydia, notices she’s pregnant and tries to help her.  She gets the glare talking to her mother and climbs into a burning car.  A man, Tom (Trevante Rhodes), and a woman, Lucy (Rosa Salazar) who says she’s a police officer, join Malorie in trying to enter the house.  Rhodes was in Moonlight (2016) and 2018’s The Predator.  Salazar was in the Maze Runner films including last year’s The Death Cure and has upcoming Alita: Battle Angel.  Douglas (John Malkovich), the husband of Lydia doesn’t want her in, the house is owned by Greg (BD Wong) who allows them in.  Malkovich is a well known actor, of course in Being John Malkovich (1999), last year he was in the action movie Mile 22.  Wong is in Gotham and Mr. Robot television series, and last year was in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.  The survivors try to discuss what is going on. There is an older woman, Cheryl (Jacki Weaver), a tattooed rocker, Felix (Colson Baker), and a novelist, Charlie (Lil Rel Howery) who seems to have idea of the creatures.  Howery of course was in Get Out (2017) and has his comedy Rel.  It feels like the apocalyptic survivors of Walking Dead, but it reminds me of the tv mini-series The Langoliers (1995) based on the Stephen King story.  Later, Malorie tries to sleep and sees shadowy forms pass in the window. Then, there it is 6 hours later on the river, the boat is covered and the children are sleeping.

Malorie tries to feed the birds in the box with the droplets on her fingers.  It seems that Sandra Bullock is again playing a survivor like Gravity (2013), but in this case she down on Earth with children.  She tries to contact someone on the walkie talkie and identifies herself.  Then, she hears her name whispered.  At the house, on the radio station, the announcer warns not to go outside and look at anything.  They hear a knocking at the door, a desperate woman, Olympia (Danielle Macdonald), and Malorie pulls his shotgun on him.  Tom instructs the woman to cover herself before entering.  She covers her eyes and enters, also pregnant.  Douglas questions Malorie using the shotgun and she expertly ejects the shells.   Greg has an idea and shows them the heat sensing camera that are around the house.  They tie him in a chair to see if Greg is affected and leave the room.  The survivors try to settle down.  Greg sees wind blow leaves, and a dark shadow, his eyes are red.  They hear thumping and rush to check on Greg.  He falls and cracks his head bleeding while the others try to destroy the monitor.   Later. Olympia wants to sleep next to next to Malorie, but she's a chatterbox and gets into personal questions that make Malorie uncomfortable.  Tom joins her after she interrupts Felix and Lucy in the laundry room.  The sun shines on the foggy river, 14 hours now, Malorie with blindfold rows the boat and hears a voice.  The children also have blindfolds.   The shift to the river journey and the past keeps the story going, but we obviously know the fate of the characters.  Malorie is under certain about the man and points a gun at the children and then at the voice.  He is making his way waist deep in the river.  He knocks the gun away and she kicks him, as he tries to pull off her blindfold, then she cuts his arm with a machete.  Malorie rows away as the man says they have to see the truth.  It’s apparent that Malorie has left the survivors or they died, but she is protective of the children.  There is a perspective of what Malorie sees through the blindfold during the struggle, probably why there are risky people Bird boxing.

Tom says that the food is running out.  Charlie says The Field market where he worked at is locked up.  Tom is leading the group with Charlie, Malorie, Douglas and Lucy.  He mentions taking the car, blacking the windows, and using the GPS to drive to the market.  Tom inputs the route and opens the garage door.   The passengers are disturbed by sounds in the darkened car. The proximity alert goes off as we see bodies lying on the street and they hear the crunch of the tires going over them.  The alert goes on ahead of them, Tom thinks it’s a truck, they have to stop and a shadow goes over the car.  Charlie starts to panic.  The wind rises and the alert goes around the car.  Tom guns the accelerator and races to the market, the GPS voice is almost ominous, “You have arrived.”   Blindfolded, the survivors move out trying to guide each other by voice.  They make their way to the door and Charlie unlocks it so they can walk in.  Tom checks the windows and has them remove their blindfolds.  He picks up walkie talkies from electronics, Douglas goes for the alcohol, and Tom talks to Malorie about being raised in Stockton by her cowboy father.  Tom seems like a nice guy, later telling her he was a soldier in Iraq, and they seem to have a connection.  Malorie pushes along her cart and sees the parrots in the cage.  Of course, the birds a great warning to other presences.  Douglas calls the others to celebrate loudly and wants to stay in the market.  Malorie doesn’t want to leave the others behind.  They hear a knocking at a freezer door.  Charlie recognizes his voice as Fish Fingers, a criminal who worked at the market.  There are of course costs to their survival and we know ultimately, it’s Malorie, the children, and the birds.  They return to the house without Charlie and then find that Felix and Lucy have taken the car.

24 hours on the river, the boat strikes a sunken truck, the boy falls overboard and the backpack of supplies is gone.  Malorie is able to pull the boy out and then hears wind chimes so she takes the boat to shore.   She covers up the children and tells them to stay in the boat.  Malorie uses fishing line to find her way back and enters an abandoned hospital ties off the reel with the fishing line and the fishing line is pulled until the empty bed falls, the wind howls at the other door, but she makes her way back.  She falls, hearing her name whispered, and shoots blindly with her gun.  The girl senses that something is wrong, she ties herself with rope, and tries to find Malorie.  The air howls again and then the girl is pulled backwards, it’s Malorie, who says that she should forget about her and save herself.     Olympia opens the door to a man who says he has his blindfold on.  Malorie draws the shotgun on him as Tom checks him.  The man, Gary (Tom Hollander), says he is on the run from “psychos” from Northwood, a mental institution that broke into his colleague’s house to force them to see the creatures.  Douglas takes the gun from Malorie and forces Gary to leave along with everyone who agrees with him.  Cheryl takes care of Douglas.  Olympia says she let him in because she is soft, raised by her parents, then husband, and wants Malorie to promise to raise her child.  Malorie has given her a Hello Kitty key chain.  We see 38 hours, the key chain in the hands of the girl.  The boat is heading towards the rapids and Malorie tells them that one of the children has to look to find a safe direction for the boat.  The river journey reminds me of another post-apocalyptic journey, The Road (2009) based on another novel, in this case by Cormac McCarthy.  They are of course pursued by the nameless creatures, they stir leaves and have voices like those that have already fallen to them, they also seem to remember.

Black Panther at the Awards!

Black Panther is one of the top movies at the box office bringing in $700 million domestic and $1 billion, 346 million worldwide.  This of course a financial success and showed that the world is ready for a mostly black cast, director, and film.  It is not just the tide of Marvel Cinematic Universe since Avengers: Infinity War brought in less of a box office with $678 million and Ant-Man and the Wasp, $216 million.  It is undoubtably a cultural phenomenon, released February 16th, it was just the MCU movie before Avengers: Infinity War which opened on April 27th.  About two months between them.  In September 2017, director Ryan Coogler, Danai Guirara, and Nate Moore, producer, presented footage of the film to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.  The film bought out theaters by charities and actors.  Black Panther is strong with critics bringing in a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating which matches the rating of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.   It was the most tweeted film with 35 million tweets.  After the film’s release, on New York Fashion Week, designs inspired by the film were presented.  Black Panther was the first film to premiere in Saudi Arabia on April 18th since the 1980’s.

So after financial and critical success, why would Black Panther need to collect awards?  Super hero films face backlash from award bodies.  Then is any superhero film worthy of award recognition. They have taken technical awards.  Superman (1978) won a special achievement award for its effects.  Batman (1989) took Best Art Direction.  Spider-Man 2 (2004) took the award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.  Suicide Squad (2016) won Best Make-up and Hairstyling.  The only notable award was Heath Ledger post-humous win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for The Dark Knight (2008). So no wins or recognition for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet we know it’s power at the box office and fan recognition.  This is part of the Superhero Backlash.  The Golden Globes is no different, Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture, but lost.  Marvel Studios is serious about getting behind the push for Black Panther at the Oscars.  It hired Cynthia Schwartz for the Oscar campaign reported by the Los Angeles Times last August.  They have For Your Consideration; Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Rachel Morrison, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Hannah Bleacher, Best Costume Design, Ruth E. Carter, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects, Best Director, Ryan Coogler, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Michael B. Jordan, Best Supporting Actress, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, and Angela Bassett, Best Original Score, Ludwig Göransson, Best Original Song, “All the Stars”, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

So let’s look at Black Panther’s chances.  Rachel Morrison was nominated, the first time for a woman cinematographer for Mudbound (2017), it would look good if she gets a win this year re-teaming with Ryan Coogler from Fruitvale Station (2013).  Hannah Bleacher was nominated at the Emmys for Beyonce: Lemonade (2016), but no recognition at the Oscars.  Ruth E. Carter was nominated for Best Costume Design for Malcolm X (1992) and Amistad (1997).  Ludwig Göransson was nominated for Best Original Score at the Golden Globes, but lost.  He was nominated at the 2018 Grammy Awards for the Record and Album of the Year and best R&B song with Donald Glover.  Göransson is again nominated this year working with Glover and also Best Score Soundtrack for Black Panther.  Director Ryan Coogler who also wrote the screenplay seems to be snubbed at the Academy Awards, his films and his direction don’t get nominated; Fruitvale Station, Creed (2015), and now Black Panther?  His vision made Black Panther possible, the Afro-futurism in the film has made a cultural change, I hope the awards nominate him, maybe that would be a start.  Similar to Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan has not received award recognition from the Academy Awards.  Lupita Nyong’o of course won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave (2013).  Danai Gurira does not have award recognition at the Oscars or Golden Globes.  Letitia Wright is an Emmy nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her “Black Museum” (2011) episode of Black Mirror.  Angela Bassett was nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Actress for What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) and won the Golden Globe for the film as Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The cast and crew of Black Panther have good backgrounds for awards recognition.

Ludwig Göransson at the Black Panther screening, El Capitan Theatre, photo by the author.

What will awards recognize mean for Black Panther?  I think it stands apart from the other MCU and even superhero films.  It has made the characters and even the fictional country of Wakanda inspirational.  Then, there is the viewership of the Academy Awards, it had it’s highest viewership, 55.25 million, in 1998 when Titanic took Best Picture.  A popular movie.  The trend has been to ignore popular films for the most part and only recognize dramas and movies that don’t connect with audiences.  This resulted in low ratings for the Academy Awards.  If Black Panther is even nominated, let’s set aside wins, it will return viewers, and connect award shows with audiences.  The Golden Globes this year is dropping viewers, 18.6 million, spreading the awards to the dramatic films.  The only standout was Bohemian Rhapsody, but of course without the controversial director.  The Academy Awards will suffer the same fate including problems with the host and its dragging run time.  I do recognize that winning the Academy Award gives some cache to films and filmmakers.  The Shape of Water won last year for Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.  I hope this would enable del Toro to finally make At the Mountains of Madness, but he has upcoming Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark which he co-wrote the screenplay and produced.  Del Toro has his long in development Pinocchio film set for 2021.  Ryan Coogler has upcoming Wrong Answer with a screenplay by Ta-Nehisi Coates who wrote the Black Panther comic book.  Also, the sequel for Black Panther.  The Golden Globes usually favors celebrities for their awards and you could see the director and many of the actors were there for Black Panther.  I would expect at least three-four technical awards for Black Panther; Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, not only nominations, but wins since Wakanda and the rest of the locations were fully realizing a world.  Also, a nomination and win for Rachel Morrison, it would show bravery by the Academy and get excitement for her.  Hollywood seems to have a problem with diversity and this would recognize the talent of these professionals.  I would like Ludwig Göransson to be nominated, maybe not a win with the competition.  Strangely, First Man won the Golden Globe.  I don’t understand what is the problem with Ryan Coogler; at the least, I hope Black Panther gets nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, he would share it with co-writer Joe Robert Cole.  Even if Black Panther gets shut out, my loyalty is to Wakanda, WAKANDA FOREVER!   The Academy Award nominations closes on January 14th, then the announcement will be on January 22nd, let your salute sound until every voter can hear you!

Stranger Things #4 Review!

Will Byers time is almost finished in the Upside Down!  This issue’s cover is by Aleksi Briclot which has Will with the Alien-like attachment to his mouth, Joyce in a decontamination suit, and Castle Byers while Hooper in his suit is examine a very Alien-like egg.  The story continues by Jody Houser with art by Stefano Martino.  We pick up with Will running in the forest of the Upside Down while the Demogorgon feeds.  It shifts to Will’s wizard character in a forest of thorny vines with a castle in the distance.  He approaches it and finds the Castle Byers above its gate.  He sees a light calling out his name.  We see in a splash page that it is Eleven checking on Will’s wizard.  This is in “Chapter Seven: The Bathtub” where she is in the sensory deprivation tank to find Will.  Eleven tells Will his mother is looking for him.  He shifts back to his boy form in the counterpart of the real world Castle Byers, the fort he made with his brother.  Eleven is gone and Will tries to keep his hope going singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.”  This has the Demogorgon closing in on him from the trees.

In a splash page, we get the fantasy world of the Demogorgon and Will the Wise.  It’s two-headed form and body reminds me of the Dungeons & Dragon’s Demogorgon, nice!, but it does have the petal-like faces.  Will flashes back to a library talking to Mike about reading Stephen King’s The Dark Tower for campaign ideas.  He mentions that his mother will allow the book.  Will wakes up in the Upside Down with the strange attachment to his mouth.  He sees a nightmarish vision of victims and then a splash page of the Cthulhu-like creature we saw in season 2.  In the suits, his mother and Hopper help free Will, from the Upside Down.  In the hospital, he sees his friends who update him on what happened, seen in “Chapter Eight: The Upside Down”, Will turns a sees a vision of the Upside Down.  It does not have the scene where he vomits a slug form of the Demogorgon like Dart.  This is really informative about Will’s time in the Upside Down.  We get some looks at things we have never seen and a clearer depiction of the Upside Down.  There is potential for more comic books, Season 2 and 3, so we will have to see if there are more on the way!
