Happy Birthday Halle Berry!

Happy Birthday Halle Berry!  She began her career in the drama series Living Dolls as Emily Franklin.  Then, she was Vivian in Spike Lee’s drama Jungle Fever (1991).  Berry followed it with the comedy Boomerang (1992).  One of the interesting early role for Halle Berry for me was as the airline attendent Jean in the action movie Executive Decision (1996).  In 1999, she won the Emmy Award for her lead in the television movie, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. An early genre part for Halle Berry was as Storm in X-Men (2000).  She won the Best Actress Academy Award for the drama Monster’s Ball (2001). Berry was a Bond Girl and spy, Jinx Johnson, in Die Another Day (2002).  She returned as Storm in X2: X-Men United (2003).

Hit the blue Follow button right above Archives on the right and I will tell a secret about Comic Con that involves Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie in 2003! Berry was in the horror movie, Gothika (2003) as Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist who finds herself in the hospital.   Another comic book role was the lead in Catwoman (2004).  Berry reprised her role as Ororo Munore in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).  She had serveal parts in the sci fi movie Cloud Atlas (2012).  Next, was her final time as Storm in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).  then, she appeared in the sci fi series Extant (2014-2015).  There is a resurgence in Berry’s film roles playing Ginger Ale in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.  This year, she has the stunning action part as Sofia in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.  She is the executive producer of the television series Boomerang based on her 1992 film.  Happy Birthday Halle Berry!

Ignited #3 Review!

Ignited continues and we are getting more of the H1 Ignition universe with Strangelands and Omni titles. Issue three features a cover by Phil Briones with a gun being held to a nervous Anouk in her catmask while the others look on.  “Triggered Part 3” is by Mark Waid and Kwanza Osajvefo, writers, with art by Briones. It opens at a darkened gun shop, in slips the paper-like form of Himari Saito, who telekinetically lifts the weapons and folds them. The owner discovers her, but Himari slips away as the owner uses his gun.  This flashes back to where we left off last issue with the police confronting the masked teens.  Then, their equipment bursts apart, Anouk thinks it’s Shai’s power, her classmate who has control of electronics.  In the chaos, they slip away, and hide their masks.  On the scene, is an officer who takes charge of the situation, also she happens to be Luther Ray Henschen’s mother!  This is a nice twist to have his mother as leader of the police.  The armored car begins to dissemble and Luther tells the others he built it.  The group is also surprised when Himari appears from a cat symbol on Luther’s jacket.

She flashes back to the day of the tragedy when she saw the lights and folded herself invisible.  Luther shows his power to rearrange matter changing the form of a bicycle.  He explains that during the time of the gunman school invasion he was in the bandroom.  The gunman appeared and he used his powers to protect himself.  An interesting artistic way to see the transformation, you can see the original object, and then it is distorted into strange shapes.  Shai appears in his electronic form surprising Luther.  Anouk flashes back to her story, she saw a bullet strike two of the students, and it slowed down when it hit her.  Some kind of kinetic power?  They all admit that they told their stories to one person, the counselor, Dr. Zhao.  Possibly she is part of the same group that is chasing the Strangelands duo.  Again, it kinda reminds me of The Clinic in the New Universe comic book, D.P. 7. It seems like they will have to confront the doctor, but I think Shai should monitor her electronically and Himari slip into her office to see if they can find what she is doing with their information.  Shai informs them of an event on their phones and in a splash page we see that there is a “March for Mercy” set to bring police and state troopers to the town.  It looks like these teens must rally all of the students and separate to use their powers to stop this rally.   A very compelling issue with great art and a story that covers everything you need before the big confrontation.

Happy Birthday Sebastian Stan!

Happy Birthday Sebastian Stan!  One of his first genre roles was as Chase Collins in the supernatural horror film, The Covenant (2006). Stan had a long running role in the television drama Gossip Girl (2007-2010) as Carter Baizen.  He was Jack Benjamin, prince in the fictional kingdom of Gilboa, in the television series Kings (2009). Stan played the bully, Blaine, in the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine (2010).  He was also in the drama Black Swan (2010). Then, he entered the MCU as James “Bucky” Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

Sebastian Stan starred in the horror movie The Apparition (2012).  He also had a role in Once Upon a Time (2012) as Jefferson also known as The Mad Hatter.  Stan returned as the Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).  He played Chris Beck, an astronaut on the Ares III mission, in The Martian (2015).  Stan played Jeff Gillooly in the bio pic, I, Tonya (2017).  He had a cameo as The Winter Soldier in Black Panther (2018).  Next, Stan was also in Avengers: Infinity War fighting as The Winter Soldier on the battlefields of Wakanda.  He was in the police drama, Destroyer (2018), directed by Karyn Kusama.  Stan was part of the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.  Then, Stan has the war film, The Last Full Measure, out in theaters on October 25th.  He has coming next year the Disney Plus streaming show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.   Happy Birthday Sebastian Stan!

Dora and the Lost City of Gold Review!

Dora and the Lost City of Gold, in terms of action or effects movies, is the best movie of the summer for me!  Caveat: I watched the cartoon with my niece who loved the show.  Dora the Explorer was a cartoon series that ran on Nickeleoden which began in 2000.  The animated series was created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner.  Its current version as Dora and Friends: Into the City! which has her as a teenager going to school at Playa Verde, California.  There was also the spin-off show, Go Diego Go!, introduced in the third season of Dora with “Meet Diego!” (2003).  The film doesn’t require seeing any of the animated series.

It is directed by James Bobin who also directed Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), The Muppets (2011), and the comedy series, Flight of the Conchords.  The story is by Tom Wheeler who also wrote the animated movie, Puss in Boots (2011).  The screenplay is by Nicholas Stoller and Matthew Robinson.  It begins with young, six year old, Dora (Madelyn Miranda), her monkey Boots, and Young Diego (Malachi Barton).  The film was more than what I expected, not just a silly romp with Dora as a teen, it shares some of the learning as the cartoon series.

They return to the bayside home of Dora and her parents, Elena (Eva Longoria) and Cole (Michael Peña) Márquez.  Longoria was an episode of Grand Hotel this year and is known for her part as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives.  Peña was Luis in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and also the evil Red in A Wrinkle in Time (2018).  They are both professors,  home studying Dora, and searching for the Incan city of Parapata (it translates to “For Legs”).  The funny part is Dora speaking to camera and asking the audience to say, “Delicioso.”  This has a twist with her father wandering who she is talking to and the audience who watched the show understanding it.  They explain that Diego has to leave with his parents.

Ten years later, the now sixteen year old Dora (Isabela Moner), is busy running through the jungle.  Moner was in the comedy Instant Family (2018) and she was memorable as Isabel Reyes in Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018).  Dora is a first lead role for Moner and she has an almost unending optimisim, intelligence, and skills to survive in the jungle.  Her co-star from Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Benicio Del Toro, is also here voicing Swiper!  She finds a cave and explores it with Boots.  The setting is classic Raiders of the Lost Ark and even though there is a chasm with a golden idol on the other side which Dora believes is a clue to Parapata.  She tries to leap across, but doesn’t quite make it, falling to the sandy bottom.  Dora sends Boots to bring her parents.

Later, Dora discovers that her parents have located Parapata, but they are worried over Dora hurting herself on her own so are sending her away to the jungles of high school!  Her parents note that they are explorers and not treasure hunters which is a shade more moral than Indiana Jones who wants to take cultural items away to American museums.  She also has to say goodbye to Boots.  Elena gives her daughter a satellite phone to talk with them and follow their journey.  Dora makes the plane trip to Hollywood, California.  She appears in the LAX crowd, the grown up Diego (Jeff Wahlberg) and his parents wonder what Dora will look like now, and she bypasses the crowds sliding down the escalator rail!  Wahlberg, nephew to Mark, was in the sci fi movie Future World (2018) and the drama Don’t Come Back from the Moon (2017).

At Diego’s home, Dora’s biggest supporter, is his grandmother, Abuelita Valerie (Adriana Barraza).  Diego worries that his prima may not fit in at school.  The security guard checks Dora’s backpack to the point that all of the students start to get late for class.  He leaves her deadliest weapon, her yo-yo.  Dora is interested in a Save the Rainforests table watched over by Sammy (Madeleine Madden).  She is the overachieving student, but without experience.  Madden was part of the Tidelands Australian series which has her Violca part of the strange seaside town.  Dora also runs into another student, Randy (Nicholas Coombe) who boasts he can hold his breath for seven minutes, maybe that will be important later.  He is a bullied student, nervous, but of course he has yet to prove his worth.

They attend class and the teacher asks about Moby Dick, Sammy raises her hand, but the teacher is surprised to see another hand raised and chooses Dora.  She summarizes the basic plot and symbolism, a model student, not just for her intelligence, but her enthusiasm.  We should have whole schools of Doras!  Still, Sammy makes it clear to Dora that she has a rival.  Dora loses contact with her parents over the satellite phone.  Later, the students have a dance where you dress up as “your favorite star.”  Dora takes this literally and her costume is only appreciated by Randy.  She goes out to dance and replicates the moves of jungle animals.  I really like a self-confident character, a great role model for teens, even going her own way and being different from others.  The others scoff at her dance and Diego is upset at the backlash.

He takes it out on Dora which causes her to withdraw into her closet, but she is consoled by Abuelita Valerie.  The school goes on a field trip to the Natural History Museum.  Sammy finds herself grouped up with Diego, Dora and Randy.  Their first assignment is to find the oldest object in the museum.  Dora notes that the banners showcase an Egyptian exhibit.   A museum worker, Christina X (Natasa Ristic) says that the Egyptian exhibit is not yet open, but leads them downstairs.  They are found by two security guards, Viper (Christopher Kirby) and Powell (Temuera Morrison) who recognize Dora.  The group is  placed in a crate and taken away.  Dora uses her knife to open the top of the crate and finds out they are at the airport.  They plan on having Dora lead them to her parents and Parapata.  Viper throws in a gas canister that will put them to sleep until they reach the jungle!

At the jungle, the henchmen load the crate into a truck, but the students are freed by Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez) who says he is a colleague of Dora’s parents.  Derbez is a comedy legend in Mexico, he has started in American films with Instructions Not Included (2013), the action movie Geo Storm (2017), and the comedy Overboard (2018).  I worked out Alejandro’s character almost from the moment he is introduced, but Derbez has fun with the part more than the gags shown in tv spots.  One of the strengths of this film is its majority Latino cast, it is a talented ensemble.  The group heads to a warehouse and Swiper takes Dora’s journal detailing her parents’ journey.  There is a terrific action scene with Dora chasing Swiper past aircraft propeller blades.

Still, they are outnumbered by the mercenaries.  Alejandro reappears in a jeep to take them to safety.  Sammy and Randy are worried about returning home.  Diego trusts in family loyalty.  Of course, Dora is back in her element, but has to watch out for the others who are not ready for the jungle.  Plus, of course we have the return of Boots!  There is some funny moments and I really liked that there is some learning moments within the action.  I think another unexpected part was the singing, there are some memorable songs I would like to hear from a soundtrack.  The Spanish words, some of the conversations are sub-titled, and the moments of learning which span history and mathematics are not heavy handed and part of the story.  This is what I find more satsifying than a straight action movie or comedy.  I don’t think of it strictly as a “kids movie” since I think it appeals to everyone.  I really hope for more adventures with Dora and this entire cast in sequels that span across the globe!  Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a brilliant movie that has comedy, songs, and more fun than can be contained in a trailer, Swiper Don’t Swipe It, and Don’t Miss It!

The Outpost, “The Blade of the Three”, Review!

After the battle with Rebb where Gwynn was taken hostage, Naya tries to apply an ointment to her head wound.  Talon enters uninvited and explains about Zed and his demon that helped in her rescue.  The queen wants to find another way to fight against the Prime Order’s armies instead of using demons.  She orders Talon to send them back through the portal, but Talon is reluctant to send away a fellow Blackblood and someone who may be a potential ally.  In a sense, the queen is right not to have a demon army, but she rushes to judgement over another Blackblood when she trusts Talon.  Whythers has made the long journey to the Capital and sends his horse to the stables.   He says that he is a Gate Marshall tracking an escaped prisoner.  Whythers is told Dred’s prisoner was taken to the Institute.  Back at the Outpost, Janzo starts to refuse Naya whatever request she is going to make.  Naya’s plan to kiss Talon didn’t work out, they stumble with some cups and get close to each other picking them up.  She asks him to kiss her for “scientific reasons”, I haven’t heard that one, then they are interrupted by the Mistress.   He sneaks out Naya for some reason.  The Mistress has brought all of her wealth and then her sister, Aunt Gertie, appears.  She sends Janzo to get some wine.  Gertie explains that the display of wealth doesn’t impress her since she has servants and a mansion with the baron.   The Mistress says her sister went away.  An interesting rivalry between sisters.

Captain Orlick (Dragan Micanovic) reports that they need steel for weapons to the queen.  The head of the miners say they will work the mines as long as they get fair pay.  A woman wants food for the starving people.  Gwynn stops the arguments and has the captain ration the food.  She makes promises to help all of them.  In a hood, Tobin, in disguise?, leaves with the others.  Sana walks with Garret in the halls of the Capital.  She kisses him.  Garret sees Gwynn looking at him.  He has his hand around Sana’s throat and she wants him to take his “medication.”  They kiss again.  Tobin is summoned before the queen a little drunk.  Gwynn refuses to marry the baron.  Naya is impressed at the queen’s action.  At the Capital, a man in white robes is taken by Whythers with a dagger to his throat.  He takes the robes of man and passes guards.  He takes off his hood to see his son and hugs him.  Garret refuses to return with his father, most likely with the “medication” still strong in him.   He calls for guards to take away Whythers.  Sana sees what has happened.  Night at the Outpost, Talon takes Zed away from the guards.  Naya sees Janzo who acts nervously.  She strays too close to the jailed Plagueling.  Janzo throws her down to protect her.  He prattles on about Plagueling wounds and Naya asks him for a walk in the gardens.  Janzo is excited at her mention of day which he thinks might be a bane for the Plaguelings.  The Plagueling problem and the colipseum hasn't been too much of a problem as the Plaguelings wandering outside of The Outpost last season, the sunlight might be exposed to the Plagueling worm and kill it.

Talon talks with Zed who says he has been in the portal for a hundred years.  This dimensional prison reminds me of the Phantom Zone that traps Kryptonian criminals.  Talon seems to be suffering from wounds from the battle.  Zed checks on her, says that Blackbloods heal from broken bones longer, and wants her to take off her shirt.  He rubs some salve on her back.  Zed explains that his clan knows that humans use Blackbloods.  Talon explains that the queen wants to send him back.  He offers to teach Talon.  She wants him to stay away from the guards in hiding.  In the morning, the Mistress tries out the queen’s throne before she enters.  She bows before the queen and then gives an offer.  The Mistress wants to offer her gold to open the mines and pay for food.  She wants to be Royal Advisor like her sister.  The queen wonders about the source of her gold.  She wants the Mistress to leave behind her questionable businesses and she counters by being appointed the Royal Treasurer.  The Mistress wants Janzo to account for everything.  She sees her sister and boastst that the queen has made her royal advisor.  Aunt Gertie leaves and sees the baron want to leave immediately.  She slaps Tobin.  Gertie wants the baron to follow her instructions to be king.  They enter the tavern and Gertie commands Janzo not to give Tobin any drink and give them rooms.  The arrival of the baron is too soon to send him away, he still has a part to play.

Zed is searching through papers.  He shows the picture of a pedestal, which he calls a key, Talon flashes back to the Dragman showing her a key.  It looks like we have the beginnings of another quest. Janzo enters and then is flustered that Zedd is still there.  She wants Janzo to keep his presence a secret.  Naya enters Janzo’s lab angry that he stood her up.  He gets angry at being in the Friend Zone.  They kiss while Janzo holds up his hand to stop the Plaguelings from growling.  Sana and her husband, The Tormentor, bow before The Three.  They are disturbed that Garret pledged himself to her and not to them.  The Tormentor adds that he passed his last test, rejecting his family.  They want to see him without Sana or The Tormentor.  The Mistress watches as Gwynn looks over the agreement.  She is about to leave to reopen the mines.  The baron enters with Aunt Gertie.  He apologizes, refusing to leave, and turns over his soldiers to the queen.  Tobin wants his legacy to be fighting for the queen, Aunt Gertie smiles at her plan unfolding.  At the prison, Dred in another cell is amused by Whythers, and The Tormentor enters his cell.  It looks like Garret Spears is not going to be saved!  Maybe he is brainwashed into this cult-like Prime Order, but Whythers may have trick up his sleeve.  Somewhere, I sense that Everit Dred will be back in power.  It seems like the power of the Capital is afraid of Queen Rosamund even though they seem to have a stronger army.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge #4 Review!

The cover by Tommy Lee Edwards is set in Oga’s Cantina with some interesting patrons except in the real Oga’s there is 100% less aliens, droids, and costumed characters.  It features Doctor Aphra on the cover and she was introduced in Star Wars: Darth Vader #3 (2015).  She is a young archeologist who is a criminal and somehow more clever than Darth Vader with her serial killer droids.  It appears that Aphra is integral to the comic books and has met every character in them, but her importance is of course negligible since she is nowhere in the films and tv series.  “The Betrayal of Kashyun” continues with Ethan Sacks and Will Sliney.  We have the plucky group led by Kendoh to try to take the Sword of Kashyun from the Ithorian antiquities dealer, Dok-Ondar, and have arranged transport by Hondo Ohnaka.  He is also working with Dok-Ondar.  A First Order Star Destroyer moves from the planet Batuu.  It sends out a shuttle which descends to the forests outside of Black Spire Outpost.  Stormtroopers are in a fire fight while a stormtrooper unloads a tracked speeder bike.  Two Resistance fighters are blasting at the stormtroopers.  One is in a helmet like the heroes of the 80's cartoon series M.A.S.K.

The speeder bike stormtrooper cuts them off and blasts them.  Important characters are not readily identified.  He reports in that they are not Resistance fighters, but fugitives with Death Marks from General Hux.  This shifts to the outside of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, this is exactly like the outside of the shop at Galaxy’s Edge.  The female Jedi statue is very memorable.  Dok-Ondar speaks to a statue, a tribute to his parents, nice story point which makes me want to see the statue in person.  Hondo Ohnaka walks up talking about the threats against the merchant.  He is brought inside his shop because there is a droid monitoring them. Kendoh and her gang watches them in hologram.  Dok-Ondar discusses with Hondo that the two halves of the Sword of Kashyn are dangerous together.  Kendoh mentions a “mysterious patron.”  It is an unstable situation with something very dangerous and not knowing the players.  Maybe it is a Jedi.  Kendoh has the gang ready to get into action.  Her henchman, Remex, goes aside to activate a device.  A cam droid deactivates and behind Dok-Ondar and Hondo is a stuffed Wampa Ice Creature, which is something I didn’t see at Galaxy’s Edge.

Hondo wants his business partner to relate his story with Doctor Aphra.  She is twirling a blaster as the assassin droids, the astromech-like Bee Tee, and Triple-Zero, the wanna-be protocol droid both in black colors that’s how we know they’re evil.  Dok-Ondar has brought along some Shistavanen henchmen, the werewolf-like alien seen in the cantina.  Dr. Aphra explains the Sword of Kashyn which is a Sith relic.  They land on Moraband, the Sith homeworld that was seen in the “Sacrifice” (2014) episode of Clone Wars, the ship approaches a valley with hooded statues with swords next to a pyramid structure.  Dr. Aphra in a breath mask appears with the wolfmen and Bee Tee to enter the temple.  She senses a trap and “checks her boot” as one of the wolfmen activates a panel. It has a fiery energy to a statue (which wasn’t seen) smash the wolfman with a mace.  Dr. Aphra destroys it.  Dok-Ondar is on the ship when communications go out, it is a strange panel with Triple Zero’s behind, but he activates syringes from his fingers noticed by another wolfman.  Dr. Aphra seems to have the upper hand, but Dok-Ondar is the patron and has the ship.  Dok-Ondar seems more respectful of artifacts and able to stay on ahead of distrustful mercenaries.  Still, there are further complications at Black Spire Outpost!  We are near the conclusion of this series and most of the questions are answered in an issue with some good story developments!

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Review!

Hobbs & Shaw are unleashed from the Fast & Furious family to push the speedometer to fun & flipped out action!  Luke Hobbs was introduced in Furious Five (2011) with Dwayne Johnson playing the Diplomatic Security Service agent.  He lifted the franchise from international car racers and daring bank robbers to James Bond-level agents.  Jason Statham camoed at the end of Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and exploded as Deckard Shaw in Furious 7 (2015).  He was a dangerous rogue agent, but the duo teamed up in The Fate of the Furious (2017).

The film is directed by David Leitch who co-directed John Wick (2014) and also Deadpool 2 (2018).  Note that the cameos are from the films connected with the filmmakers. The screenplay is by Chris Morgan who has been with the Fast & Furious franchise since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) and Drew Pearce who also worked on Hotel Artemis (2018).  It opens in London, MI-6 agents are securing the transport of some important cargo in a garage.  The agent in charge is Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby).  The actress is known for playing Princess Margaret in the series The Crown was was the White Widow in Mission: Impossible: Fallout (2018).  She has revealed an important serum in a van.

Outside is a mysterious motorcycle rider in black who is tracking the agents.  This is of course Brixton played by Idris Elba.  He is playing the long running DCI John Luther in the BBC crime series Luther and was Heimdall in Avengers: Infinity War (2018).  He has been transformed cybernetically and with other enhancements by the organization, Eteon.  Brixton ruthlessly takes down the agents and then goes after the serum.  Hattie closes the van door and then injects herself with the serum.  She manages to escape which means that Brixton doesn’t have any heat detection in his tracking.  Then, we get the dual shots of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw waking up and going about their day.  Hobbs is a lawman, an agent, but has a regular, working man sensibility.  Johnson is Spencer Strasmore in the Ballers series and is also in the upcoming Jumanji: The Next Level which comes out on December 13th.  Shaw is the criminal, brutal, but acts like a refined gentleman.  Statham of course was in The Meg (2018) and also the comedy action movie Spy (2015).  They both end up taking out henchmen to question their bosses.  Hobbs at a tattoo parlor and Shaw at a wealthy dinner party.

Luke Hobbs goes to a diner to meet with his daughter Sam (Eliana Sua), the character was introduced in Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, but recast here.  She of course humanizes her father with her calls and frankness, but any communication can be tracked.  Plus, we still don’t know who is Sam’s mother, except that she is no longer around, but I guess that will be saved for a sequel.  We also hear that Hobbs had some problem with his family in Samoa and hasn’t returned.  During his massive breakfast, they get a visit from a CIA agent, Locke, don’t want to spoil the actor, but it seems like this is a set up for a Hobbs spin-off.

Shaw’s meeting is at prison where he meets with his mother, Queenie, played by Helen Mirren.  She of course is an Academy Award winning actress from The Queen, but also has some action movies like this year’s Anna.  I wonder if her character’s name is based on the Academy Award film.  Queenie is in prison for an unknown crime, but seems comfortable there.  She mentions that Deckard should make up with his sister, though there is no mention of his brother, Owen played by Luke Evans.  Shaw went on a rampage in Furious 7 to check up on Owen’s condition after he was injured in Fast & Furious 6.  Again, it looks like the supporting characters may be there to set up the Shaw family in their own movies.

The duo are of course dislike each other and go their own ways.  There is some fun rapport and jokes with them.  Hobbs is able to track Hattie and they get into a fight.  She has rigged her apartment with a grenade, but Shaw has gotten around it to check the secret compartments around it before battling MI-6 agents.  They suspect she has gone rogue and killed the agents.   At the CIA headquarters in London, Hattie explains that she injected herself with the Snowflake serum that can dissolve a body.  Eteon is searching for it to spread world wide and eliminate the weak part of humanity.  Hattie needs to find a way to remove the serum without killing her.  Brixton breaches the headquarters and takes away Hattie.

Hobbs and Shaw pursue him.  The chase goes on with Shaw’s McLaren sports car, the maker is clear since there is a Fast and Furious close-up of the logo, and Brixton’s motor bike that can also dissemble like a Transformer.  It ends up with a fight between Brixton and the leads.  Brixton can track the possible movements of both men, but it is on the level of Leigh Whanell’s Upgrade (2018) than Terminator (1984).  It is strange that Brixton doesn’t have the lethality of Upgrade’s Grey Trace.  The counter for a cybernetic killer (or robots like in the Star Wars prequels) is of course an electro-magnetic pulse or a device with similar effects.  I also don’t see why Brixton bothers shooting a full clip when every shot is computer guided.

We find out that Shaw put a bullet in Brixton’s head until he was revived and reconstructed.  This is similar to the James Bond villain, Renard, in The World Is Not Enough (1999).  Next, they have to find Professor Andreiko played by Eddie Marsan.  He was the Headmaster in Deadpool 2 (2018) and also was in Leitch’s Atomic Blonde (2017).  I really expected a cameo from that last film since there is an actor who has also appeared in the Fast and Furious movies.  The professor is the inventor of the Snowflake and of course is meek, but I like the later action by his character.  He mentions that a device to extract the Snowflake from Hattie is in Russia.

At a mansion, there is Madame M (Eiza Gonzalez) and her mercenary team of women.  Gonzalez was in Baby Driver (2017) and also known for From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series.  Still, this is a brief cameo which might show up in the Shaw sequels.  She seems to have a connection with Shaw and finds a way to get them to the Eteon base.  There is some more action that ultimately leads to Samoa.  We get some interesting cameos there and the Fast and Furious theme of family is strong here, especially with family that is tested and reconciled.  The pacing of the movie is good, but the run time is a little too long.  It would have bumped up the rating for me more if it was somewhat shorter.  Still, Hobbs and Shaw are the perfect summer event fighting duo!

The Outpost, “Regarding the Matter of Garret Spears”, Review!

At the Capital, Garret hears from Dred in the next cell, he is told about Dred’s visions of demons killing innocents.  He says he killed the Blackbloods without the approval of the Three.  Dred says he saw the last portrait of Rosalin and she had a “misshapen face.”    Tormentor and Sana arrive to take Garret away.  The Tormentor fulfills his promise to take Dred to a larger cell only to pummel him.  Talon sees Janzo who tries to straighten his hair, she says he looks cute, so he tries to kiss her and Talon throws him down.  She puts him back in the Friend Zone.  Garret takes some soup, then medicine.  Sana goes to a elderly calligrapher who has finished the note from Gwynn.  Sana brings the letter and Garret reads that he has been replaced.  He says he needs to be alone.  Garret burns the letter.  He reveals the artwork that was covered up.  Garret sees the child who may be Rosmund with the face.  Of course, he is foolish to believe someone who tried to kill him, with a Capital that wants to destroy Queen Rosmund aka Gwynn.

We see The Outpost, Naya announces Baron Tobin to Gwynn.  He has brought a gift.  A sheer gown that has Gwynn sending him away.  At the tavern, the Mistress has tea with her sister, Janzo admits that they are friends with the queen.  Aunt Gertrusha leaves.  Night falls at the Outpost, Gwynn hears news from Naya, she reports that her project, Janzo, is “handsome.”  A soldier tells the queen that Rebb has arrived.  Gwynn brings the charge that Redd killed Ilyin.  They hear a scuffle as the demon enters and Rebb takes care of the guards.  She holds a spear to Gwynn.  She tells Naya to get Talon.  Tobin gets another drink talking to Aunt Gertrusha.  A soldier says that Gwynn is taken hostage.  Naya makes her way past the soldiers.  She runs into Tobin.  He goes off to “rescue” Gwynn.  Naya sees Talon and Janzo want Talon to summon another Loquri demon.  Tobin bursts through the window drunk.  Rebb summons the Loquri.  He tossed out of the window.  Gwynn tries to escape and Rebb strikes her down.  Talon opens a portal bringing in a Loquri.  Another Blackblood, Zed (Reece Ritchie) follows it.  A new demon and Blackblood?  More of a complication or solution?

Talon tells the Blackblood she wants to send him back.  Janzo hears the Blackblood speak a command not to hurt the others as they fight.  Talon finds out he is the enemy of Rebb.  Sana checks on Garret, playing along with the deception?, they kiss as we see the artwork of the child, is this Sana?  The Blackblood holds a sword on Talon.  She wants command of the Locuri.  Talon knocks him back.  She promises to return the demon when she gets back.  Rebb revives Gwynn and threatens to cut a toe!  Talon appears from the window.  He offers to hand over her gift for the queen.  Rebb summons her Locuri.  Talon tries to delay Rebb as she calls her demon.  Rebb frees Gwynn and she walks towards the door so Talon will drop her sword.  The demons battle each other.  Gwynn kicks over Talon’s sword.  The Loquri fall from the window and there is the battle between Talon and Rebb.  The Loquri grabs Talon from the window, but is killed by a ballista.  Talon has a knife for Rebb.  It seems like we have a new complication with Garret swearing a new alligiance.  What I see missing from all of this is his father, Whythers, who may be making his way to the capital.
