Happy Birthday Summer Glau!

Happy Birthday Summer Glau! She started out as a ballerina and played Prima Ballerina in the “Waiting in the Wings” (2002) episode of Angel.  Then, River Tam was Glau’s iconic role on Firefly (2002-2003), the sci fi western created by Joss Whedon.  She played a brilliant, though traumatized young woman experimented on by the Alliance. Glau returned as River Tam in the Serenity (2005) film. We discovered that the Alliance experiments had made River into a living weapon.  Glau then played Tess Doerner in The 4400 (2005-2007).  Her next role was as Cameron Phillips, a Terminator named Cameron sent to protect John Connor, in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009).  She guest starred as herself in “The Terminator Decoupling” (2009) episode of The Big Bang Theory.

Bad Batch, “Infested”, Review!

The Havoc Marauder heads back to Ord Mantell City, they land at their docking bay, and Hunter exits with the rest of the Bad Batch remarking that they should be paid extra by Cid.    Echo notes that she left out the gundarks on the mission.  The missing missions should be picked up in a comic book or novel.  They are eyed by guards in dark armor (not identified) as the Bad Batch returns to Cid’s Parlor.  The same guards wander through the bar checking on citizens.  One of the guards tries to stop them from entering Cid’s office, he gets a nice sleep thrown against the wall by Hunter.  They enter the office, a Devaronian (Tom Taylorson) is there at Cid’s desk and dark guards draw their blasters.  Devanorians are devilish, aliens with red skin and horns (females do not have horns) that were first seen in at the cantina in Star Wars.  Cid later identifies him as Roland, “a former client.”  Clone Force 99 also have out their blasters.  Omega notices that Ruby, the strange lizard creature they rescued in "Battle Scars", is with the Devaronian.  This is his pet and he notes that Cid is “out” and taken over her business.  Hunter doesn’t want missions from the Devaronian and they leave.

At the hangar, Omega wants to help Cid, she is in fact at the hatch of the Havoc Marauder!   Roland noticed that Cid’s place was at a key part of hyperspace and started working with the Pykes.  Cid wants to get back her place.  She explains that Roland has a shipment of spice at her office.  Tech goes on to say that without the spice, the Pykes will want to collect from Roland.  Cid takes them to a hatch activated by her staff.  Underground, there are “old mining tunnels” running under the city.  There are some carts that they will use to carry out the spice.  Cid divides the group with “Tiny” (Omega) and “Goggles” (Tech), her nicknames are always fun. She pumps the handle moving the mine cart on an overhead rail as the others follow.  Shades of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!  Cid has them reach a door that she says once they go past it, there is the danger of something infesting the tunnels.  She has “Big Guy” (Wrecker) open the door.

It is dark as they move through the cavern, they use glowrods to try to look about the darkness, Big Guy drops his glowrod!  This is kinda a Fellowship of the Rings Moria situation.  There is some skittering noises, but this dies down and they continue until reaching below Cid’s office.  A ladder leads up to the office.  She activates a signal device sending Ketch to walk past Ruby and drop some of his Mantell Mix.  It’s a trail that leads outside and a cage is dropped on her.  Roland has his guards find Ruby.  Ketch and Bolo run away with Ruby in the cage.  Bolo gives Cid the “all clear.”  Tech opens the hatch to Cid’s office.  Tech has scanned the six crates of spice.  Wrecker carries down the crate to be loaded by Cid and Omega.  Bolo tries to feed Ruby a Mantell Mix and she bites his finger causing him to drop her cage.   Ruby is happy to be reunited with Roland and he sends the guards after her captors.

The last two crates are handed down as Echo goes to seal the door.  Roland takes Ruby to the office, but Echo’s scomp link has locked the door.  The others rush out of the office.  Roland is impatient at the guards trying to open the door and blasts the control.  He finds the spice is missing and also the hatch hidden under the rug.  Guards see the smugglers leave in the carts.  They board carts and activate the engines.  Wrecker fires back at the guards.  The guards blast at them.  The Bad Batch cart is suddenly stopped and Hunter leaps to the guard cart sending it in reverse!  It crashes into the rear guard cart sending them down the cavern.  The stopped carts collide with the last guard cart and they all fall down.  Omega hears the skittering sound getting louder.  A swarm of creatures, Cid calls them the Hive, rises upwards and Cid has everyone use the carts’ engines.  More guard carts are taken by the insectoid creatures called Irlings.  The Bad Batch use their blasters on them until Tech realizes that they are repelled by the light of the glowrod.  Cid worries about the spice lost to the Irlings disrupting the cart.

There are a vast number of the Irlings that I have to wonder what they eat to sustain their colony.  Hunter wants Wrecker to seal off the cavern.  He is able to close the door splattering some of the Irlings. At the office, Roland holds his necklace, when he asks Bolo and Ketch about Cid.  He wants the spice.  Then, the Pykes enter, they run the Pyke Syndicate and first appeared in the Clone Wars episode, “Eminence” (2013).  Pykes are lanky and wear strange, trapezoid helmets.  The leader has a reverberated voice provided by Liam O’Brien who also voices Bolo.  Roland tries to explain that the shipment was stolen.  The Pyke leader threatens Roland’s family.  Cid leads the others to her parlor and they see the scattered bodies of Roland’s guards.  The Pykes bring in Roland and he points out Cid.  She says they don’t have the spice so the leader wants everyone killed!  Hunter points out that they know the location of the spice.  The leader says that they should get the spice and hold Omega until they return it.  Cid’s plan is to go to the cavern with “Muscles” and lift up the spice crates.  Omega talks with Roland while they are captive.  The latest episode of #BadBatch has some fun moments with Cid, a twist with Roland, but the threats are really toothless, more of a complication than a danger.  The emphasis on Cid is good, but the episode doesn't really move the narrative of the Bad Batch, the situation with the clone troopers, and the Empire.

The Outpost, “A Throne of Our Own”, Review!

Last episode, Falista appears and takes the crown alongside the revived Tobin.  At the ceremony, Garret whispers to Falista that she can’t side with the Three.  He takes out his sword to take on the guards.  Two escapes using his Zinj.  Garret is about to strike Two and Falista uses her Red Zinj on him.  Talon says she does not accept her rule.  Garret is arrested.  Two tells the assembled to hail Queen Falista and King Tobin.  Later, Two and Three want Garret killed, but Tobin disagrees with them.  Falista notes that Garret will be imprisoned.  Three moves to take Tobin’s dagger and holds it to his throat.  Falista orders Three to stand down.  Two has a suggestion.  At his cell, Talon meets with Garret, she wanted him to wait for their chance to take on Two and Three.  Garret has faith in Tobin that he would be spared.  He wants Talon to rally the troops.  She doesn’t think this will work with the Covenant soldiers under Falista’s control.  Hopeless situation?  There is always a way with The Outpost!

Luna plays at the card game, Octa, slipping one card from underneath the table.  New characters in The Outpost always start off flawed, but need to prove themselves.  Janzo sees her cheating.  He tells Luna that she will only have one hand.  Her opponent wants his money.  He holds a dagger to Luna and Munt has his hammer.  Luna takes hold of the man and twists his hand taking away the dagger.  Covenant soldiers shut down the tavern, Nightshade Inn, and they take away Luna.  The commander wants the tavern closed.  He announces the order of Queen Falista closing the Nightshade Inn.  Munt holds Janzo as they see their life’s work ended.  Both Falista and Tobin enjoyed their time at the tavern so this must be an order by Two and Three.  Luna is taken to the cell next to Garret.  She gets buckets of water thrown at her.  Garret says she reminds him of someone, Talon, also familiar to Luna.  Garret gives her his coat because he’s a gentleman.

Zed walks the alleyway and Janzo brings him a question about Blackbloods, specifically their ear tips.  He says Janzo should ask Wren.  She can’t keep the secret for long!  Talon trains at sparring, Zed says that Lu-Qiri are missing.  Falista wants Tobin to use the bed, but he feels it is too soon after Gwynn’s death.  He doesn’t think the gods spared his life and is uncomfortable that his men died.  Falista says that the gods spoke to her, really Vorta the demon woman, and says she is One.  Can Tobin file for divorce with the gods?  Talon checks the tracks of the Lu-Qiri in the misty forest.  Zed tries to convince Talon to rule and wants her to bring over the Blackbloods.  It’s kind of a torture to leave the Blackbloods.  Tobin enters the prison and sends away the guards.  He says he will let Garret out if he gives his loyalty to Falista and Tobin.  Garret does not want to be under the Three again. He wants Tobin to kill Two and Three, but he refuses.  Garret says the Three killed Tobin’s father.  Luna wakes up and says Garret should have lied giving his allegiance.  Falista has twin thrones made for herself and Tobin.

Talon and Zed hear a battle.  Lu-Quiri are attacking a man, they use their whistle rings, Zed uses his Zinj and is contacted by Vorta.  She has detected all of the Zinj users!  A Lu-Qiri knocks out Talon!  Night, Talon finally revives and checks on Zed.  Vorta must have used the Lu-Qiri.  Zed explains his vision of Vorta.  She had called Talon the Betrayer.  Janzo is getting ready for sleep and wonders about Wren’s ears.  He said that Zed told him it was a serious condition.  Wren finally reveals to Janzo that she is pregnant.  He faints.  The commander frees Luna.  She says she knows how to repay her debt to Talon.  Now awake, Janzo is excited for his new baby, he wants to tell everyone, but Wren wants it kept a secret from others.  Falista is asleep, a man appears with a dagger, he is stopped by Tobin.  The assassin stabs Tobin’s leg and Falista uses her Red Zinj to stop her.  Tobin throws the dagger at Luna, but she falls from the balcony.  Talon wouldn’t want a supposed debt paid by an assassination!

The next day, Two and Three say that the assassin may have been sent by Garret Spears.  Also, there is a conspiracy to kill Falista so she orders a search.  Janzo, Munt, and Warlita try to clean up the tavern.  Munt catches a mention that Janzo made about a child.  Janzo decides to tell them about Wren and they are happy.  Soldiers arrive to take away Warlita  to give the queen a bath since she’s a handmaiden.  Talon and Zed enter the Outpost and see the opened door.  Luna is bleeding from the dagger wound.  Zed brings Janzo to stitch up her wound.  Zed sees the soldiers take away citizens.  He tells the others that all of the houses are being searched. Soldiers burst into the room, Zed, Janzo, and Talon are sitting at a table, Luna must be underneath it.  They search including a bundle of blankets at the bed.  The others move the table and Janzo finishes the stitching.  Janzo is nervous about Zed and Talon going to see Wren.  They show Wren a picture of Vorta.  She does not recognize the creature.  The conflict between Two and Three gives five times the trouble to Tobin and Falista.  The threat of Vorta is lingering.  The Outpost keeps up the tension with this episode!

Superman and Lois, “Fail Safe”, Review!

Smallville residents take out their fear on the Cushings, Morgan Edge is defeated and put in a Kryptonite cell at the DoD.  In his cell, is Morgan Edge, he sees himself flashing back, younger, and tortured by the red rays by his hologram father, Ro.  He wants to prove himself.  Superman wants him to tell where is the Eradicator.  He used his heat vision on the Eradictor.  Superman wants to know where is Leslie Larr.  He has Edge’s crystal of his father.  At the Kent farm, Clark says that General Lane is keeping the army around.  Lois says the principal will be answering questions at an assembly.  She gives them the cover story.  Lois gets a call from Chrissy.  Lana is told to take a leave from the fire station.  At the school, Sarah joins Jordan and Jonathan, as the others head to the assembly.  Jonathan’s players ask if General Lane is in charge of the DoD.  He gets a visit by Tegan and leaves school with her.

SUPERMAN AND LOIS - - “Fail Safe” - - ADAM RAYNER, TYLER HOECHLIN   - - Photo: Bettina Strauss/The CW -- © 2021 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

Chrissy wants a headling for the Smallville Gazette and Lois wants interviews.  They need a statement from the DoD.  At the barn, John Henry is working on his laptop next to his RV and suit.  He is trying to track Larr.  John Henry wants to adjust to this world after finding the Kryptonian.  Clark gets the signal and the computer informs Irons that a Kryptonian is headed to the DoD.  Superman is flying getting updates from General Lane.  He takes on Larr as she is flying towards the DoD.  Larr strikes down Superman and John Henry blasts her.  Short work of a villain who should be the central conflict of the episode.  Maybe we would get her Kryptonian backstory.  He gives John Henry the 7734 necklace and wants to eliminate the weapons.  Jonathan is taking a ride with Tegan.  They both realize they are unattached.  Sarah leads Jordan to a forest path.  She has led him to a bridge.

At the diner, Kyle talks with Lana about their job problems.  Tom Mitchell (Rohain Arora), Kyle’s co-worker needs oxygen from the fire where he saved Mitchell, but the others blame him for Edge’s action.  Lois wants a comment from General Lane.  He is preparing a pamphlet to cover the Kryptonite and keep people away from the mines.  In Edge’s cell, he flashes back to his younger self standing up to the red rays.  He wants to restore the crystal of his mother, but is denied by his father.  Edge says Superman is holding back his power to live amongst humans, but likes unleashing his power.  He screams that Superman is just like himself.  Chrissy is frustrated that Lois hasn’t gotten the quote from the DoD.  She thinks Lois is covering for the DoD.  At a field, Tegan is talking with Jonathan.  She talks about the rumors and Jonathan’s grandfather.  He gets that she is just using him to know about the events of Smallville and walks home.

SUPERMAN AND LOIS - - “Fail Safe” - - ERIK VALDEZ, EMMANUELLE CHRIQUI  - - Photo: Bettina Strauss/The CW -- © 2021 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

Kyle is angry at the situation, he brings up moving away.  Sarah notes the bridge is place she goes to and that her family was originally from Mexico, Cushing?  Jordan says he will always be there for Sarah and they kiss.  This is interrupted by police officers!  General Lane says that Kryptonite weapons are being eliminated.  Superman wants to keep them around in case he or other Kryptonians become a danger.  At the barn, John Henry spray paints the armor, the computer wants him to try to meet his sister.  Jonathan joins him impressed that he rebuilt the armor.  Clark sees that Jonathan is not at school.  Lois gets a call from General Lane, he’s concerned about Clark.  Lana notices the crossed out jobs for Kyle.  Sophie Cushing wonders about her father because he asked about going to another school.  Jonathan tells Clark that he went with a girl from junior class, but she only wanted to hear about the true story.  Lois enters, um, mad, sends Jonathan to his room.  She doesn’t want to hear about the Kryptonian weapons.  Wow, Clark is getting a talking to and now has to deal with Jordan.

Lana over hears from Mayor Dean (Eric Keenleyside) about stirring up controversy, she chews him out, and then joined by Lois. She tells Lois that Smallville is not the same.  Lois returns home with Jordan and sends him to his room.  At the kitchen, more calm, she tells Clark that he is wrong.  He confesses that when Zod took over, he felt the release of not holding back his powers.  Lois agrees that there should be a failsafe, but not in the hands of the DoD.  Clark tells John Henry that he should have the 7734.  Chrissy is at the Smallville Gazette working and Lois walks in.  Lois admits she lied, she wants to get the town to see the threat of Morgan Edge.  At Edge’s cell, he is angry at his hologram father, about his brother.  He detaches his father’s hologram crystal.  In the present, Edge says goodbye to his father.  He closes his eyes and then his eyes glare blue.  Clark and Lois have both sons apologize for leaving school.  I'm sensing that Chrissy writes a story to unite Smallville and that Lana is then elected mayor.  Superman and Lois’ latest episode doesn’t strike the balance between dramatic small town life and superhero conflicts.  It leans heavy into the drama without the mix of superhero beyond Edge, but it does become threatening at the last few minutes of the episode!

Gunpowder Milkshake Review!

Gunpowder Milkshake has begun blasting on Netflix on July 14th, The film is directed and co-written by Navot Papushado, who also wrote and directed the thriller, Big Bad Wolves (2013).  His co-writer is Ehud Lavski.  It opens with a bloody man in a chair trying to raise a gun, he is shot by a in a coat.  Narration says there is men in a group called The Firm.  There is a banging at a door, the figure turns and we see partly in shadows, the eyes of Sam (Karen Gillan).  She was last playing Ruby in Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). The narration says that she is there to handle problems from The Firm like the John Grisham novel or the 1993 Tom Cruise film?  A cleaner in  terms. The door is kicked in and there is an endless series of men.  The assassin raises her guns.  We get the title and then the assassin returns to her apartment, a blue hat and coat, with blood splattered on the right side of her face.  She goes to her refrigerator to get vanilla ice cream and milk.  The assassin drinks a glass of milk.  She watches a cutesy anime show as she stitches up the wound in her arm!

Sam gets a call from Nathan who wants her to meet with him at the diner.  The diner is rain soaked, retro 50’s diner, she sits waiting and served an ice cream shake by the waitress Rose (Joanna Bobin).  Then, we get a flashback 15 years earlier, same greeting by Rose and the young Sam (Freya Allan) is waiting for her mother.  Out of the rain, her mother, Scarlet (Lena Headey) does appear, thanking Rose for watching over her.  Headey was also in this year's action movie Twist. Sam is upset her mother is three hours late and has brought what her mother asked for a hardback book.  Inside is a pistol resting in pages carved out for it. A bit like John Wick.  She says that she is going to leave for a time, Sam says she can stay in the library with Anna May, but her mother says it’s too dangerous.  She takes Sam’s hand in her bloody hands and they both sip from the milkshake.  It looks like they are rivaling each other, not just having a delicious milkshake.   The quaint reality hiding the violent assassin’s life reminds me of the films of Luc Besson especially Leon: The Professional (1994).

Several men burst into the diner, ignore Rose, and one walks up to the booth with Sam.

He says her mother killed his father and takes out a switchblade.  Sam is defiant speaking in Russian and he brings up the blade and cuts her cheek wanting to know where is her mother.  She eyes the book and the man sees it is empty.  Her mother has the gun with silencer and tells Sam to close her eyes.  We hear the gun firing and men groaning as they die.  Sam opens her eyes and notices her mother going to the car.  She tries to run after her, but is caught by Nathan (Paul Giamatti).  He is a perfect fit for this shoot-em up movie, Giamatti is next in Jungle Cruise.  Her mother sees her shouting out for her.  It snaps back to the present, Nathan enters the diner, Rose asks if he is clean and Nathan takes out a .38 from his ankle holster.  Sam says the job had “bad intel”, only four or five gunmen, she flashes back to the door kicked open by dozens of men.  Nathan says she is needed because someone, an accountant, stole from The Firm.  He also wants her to get new firearms not connected to her last killing.

A man, Jim McAlester (Ralph Ineson), walks in to see the bodies, killed by his son, his nephew didn’t know about it. He wants revenge on his son’s killers. Sam walks in to a library and carries a bright yellow bag that has “I heart kittens” on it!  She brings the bag to the librarian, Madeleine (Carla Gugino), to exchange for some “books.”  Gugino was also in the action film, San Andreas (2015).  We’ve already seen that a book was hollowed out to carry a gun.  Sam doesn’t have a card, but would like to get one.  Madeleine takes Sam through a door in the wall sized painting with a lion.  Then, down some winding stairs, and says to Anna May that Sam wants to open an account.  This is a character played by Angela Bassett.  The actress was also in Avengers: Endgame (2019).  She says they don’t accept new readers and calls for Florence (Michelle Yeoh).  The actress is known for action roles besides her dramatic parts, her next movie is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.  All very subtle, but with this cast, some of the old ultra-violence is on the way.  Sam doesn’t fold to Anna May’s threats.  They ask her name and when Sam mentions it, they know she is Scarlet’s daughter, and that they haven’t seen Scarlet in 15 years.

They examine her weapons and then pile her with books; Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Virginia Woolf. Madeleine adds an Agatha Christie book for reading, funny!  Sam gets a text from Nathan, “Le Bonbon Hotel, Room 11”.   She heads to the hotel in her black trench coat and hat, the desk clerk nods her in the right direction, she enters Room 11 with her gun drawn.  It has a glaring red light and she moves to the bed which has bank notes.  Also, on the bed, a phone chimes, and the man appears wanting to answer the phone.  He rushes towards Sam, there is a struggle, and he is shot in the gut.  He manages to get the phone and the caller says he has 60 minutes to bring the money to the Gutterball Bowling Alley or his nine year old daughter will be killed.  Sam is about to take the money in its white case and then goes back to take the wounded man out of the hotel.  She puts him in her car and her hat blows off.  At a hospital, Sam sets the man down, and thn puts her silencer on a nurse’s book.  She is told to put her gun in the “cookie Jar”, a giant tooth jar.  Sam wants the doctor to watch over the father.  Then, she drives away calling Nathan about the situation.  Sam is quickly drawn in a situation with rescuing the girl,  Emily (Chloe Coleman), whom of course is like her own past.  Still, she has to face all of the dangerous associates of The Firm, get help from the women in the library, and just survive! Gunpowder Milkshake is a stylish action film with a great cast of women assassins!
