Happy Birthday Rinko Kikuchi! Her first film was Will to Live (1999). In 2006, she appeared in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s drama Babel. Rinko played Chieko Wataya, a deaf Japanese teen. Rinko was nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for the part. She had an early role in the Japanese sci fi Assault Girls (2009) by Mamoru Oshii who worked on the anime Ghost in the Shell. In 2010, Rinko starred in the romantic drama, Norwegian Wood, based on the novel by Haruki Murakami.
She played Mako Mori in the 2013 Guillermo del Toro film, Pacific Rim. She is director of the Jaeger program, but she really wants to co-pilot a Jaeger. Then, Rinko played a witch in the 47 Ronin movie that year. She played the lead role in the drama Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014). Rinko starred in another Japanese sci fi movie, Terra Formars (2016) by Takashi Mike known for Ichi the Killer and now Blade of the Immortal. She returned as Mako Mori in Pacific Rim: Uprising.
