Monkey Prince #3 has Marcus as Monkey gaining confidence and acting like a superhero! Marcus is just trying to fit in at Gotham High and also training to be Monkey Prince. He faced Batman and Robin, Damian is also a student at the high school. Marcus has to accept his destiny as Monkey Prince and his mentor, Shifu Pigsy, continues his training playing Keep Away with a red envelope. The regular cover by interior artist, Bernard Chang, has Monkey Prince facing Robin leaping at him with swords with Batman behind them. I was wondering about the Ages 13+ label since I felt the issues would be a little too strong in content for younger readers. Early issues had a tiny label. “Enter the Monkey Part 3” continues with writer Gene Luen Yang. Pigsy has the red envelope out as the cloud chase goes into the sky.
Monkey Prince complains that Shifu Pigsy is tightening the circlet around his brow. Pigsy says if he can’t concentrate, Marcus will fall. He holds out the red envelope, but of course he is too slow. Monkey Prince’s foot slips through hs cloud. Shifu Pigsy tells him that he has to focus and be conscious of his action. In a splash page, we get Monkey Prince surprised at his cloud riding while Pigsy watches. We shift to the dark sewers underneath the Iceberg Lounge as the demon possessed Golden Horn Penguin carries more bodies. He is watched by his assistants, Laura and Winston, Marcus’ parents! Winston has the exorcism gun with his wife powering up the weapon. It makes a shriek and Winston blasts the Golden Horn Penguin. They kiss at their success, but the demon is not finished yet! We know of course that Monkey Prince will eventually have to take on the Golden Horn Penguin.
We get back to Monkey Prince who shows his skill at cloud riding, but then slips off the cloud! Shifu Pigsy is worried that he will have to find another son of the Monkey King. He is fooled by Monkey Prince who swoops in and takes the envelope with his tail! The red envelope transforms into his mask which Pigsy says is to hide his identity? He’s a monkey! Shifu Pigsy hears demons so says they will meet again at his school office where he works as the janitor, Mr. Zhu. He bows and Monkey Prince responds with a curtsy, Marcus is getting a hang of Monkey’s trickster nature. At school, Marcus’ friend, Kaya, is distracted by Monkey Prince riding the cloud. She gets his attention and Monkey Prince tries to attack aloof though he is nervous. Kaya is worried about her brother who is missing for two hours. She reveals that her brother is Rizalino, the Riz, Marcus’ bully!
At Downtown Gotham City, a hot dog vendor is met by Mr. Zhu who wants something to eat. The vendor speaks with a hiss and has a short, puppet-like face. Zhu sees a giant demon eye in his cart. He transforms into Shifu Pigsy with his Nine-toothed rake. Pigsy smashes the cart revealing a green demon, the vendor is a blue demon. The green demon tries to zap Pigsy with his eye weapon. Shifu Pigsy pierces the eye with the rake’s spikes, yeech! The green goo from the eye splatters the demons who cry, “It burnsss!” A very Gollum response. The demons say their master is raising an army and the first general is already in Gotham, Golden Horn Penguin! Pigsy sweeps the rake that freezes the demons and he shatters them with his open palm! Kaya knows there is a connection with Monkey Prince to Marcus. She saw him jump into the pool and Monkey Prince leaped out. This fooled the school personnel, but not Kaya.
Monkey Prince explains that Marcus is just a fan and he helped him out. Kaya just wants to find her brother and Monkey Prince cloud rides away to find him. Winston and Laura try to escape, arguing with each other, Golden Horn Penguin grabs both of their throats! Still, he says he needs them as “Bat bait”! Monkey Prince is looking for The Riz on the top of a statue when Shifu Pigsy cloud rides in to say the world needs him. He is busy trying to help out Kaya and flies away on his cloud. We find at the school football stadium that The Riz is bound upside down questioned by Robin. Interrogated for almost two hours? Kinda brutal Boy Wonder. He is asked what he knows about Monkey Prince. Robin mistakes The Riz as a partner to Monkey Prince who suddenly appears. Monkey Prince has to fight with Robin using his fighting skills and burp clouds. Robin strikes his staff against Monkey’s gauntlets and he cries out in pain. His hand is severed and grabs Robin’s boot. He frees The Riz who vomits at the grisly site. Kaya gives Monkey Prince a kiss on the cheek, he starts reverting back to Marcus, and she kisses him! Monkey Prince #3 keeps the fun action going, but hints at his next battle!
