Strolling Through the (Theme) Park One Day: Atlantis - The Dig!

The new Aquaman trailer has whales and turtle-like vessels in an Atlantis lit by bioluminescence.  It was always my ambition to go to Atlantis, but it was really the casino and resort in Bermuda that would be close enough for me.   I went there as one of the destinations of a cruise I took in 2010.  It was an easy to make, but had to make special arrangements for the cruise.

The Atlantis Resort features the Aquaventure which is a 141-acre area of water slides including the 60-foot Leap of Faith that drops riders through a tunnel in a shark lagoon, a mile long Rapid River water ride, 11 swimming pools, and beaches.  The Atlantis Paradise Island opened in 1998.  The Atlantis Casino patrons waited in a queue on the dock.  By the way, the weather in Bahamas is incredible, I asked the person checking us in about it and she said it was always pleasant and sunny.  We were taken to a four person cart that drove from the dock to Paradise Island.

I remember it as an entertaining, breezy ride.  Then, there is the flying fish circular fountain in front of the casino.  Entering the hotel, it is very elegant, with some Atlantis touches like a throne and a display of crystals that look like a bouquet or bursting from the base.  The gambling was casual, not chaotic or depressing like some casinos, but I wasn’t there for gambling.  I was walking around the hotel, pushed a door outside, and saw the aquarium which looked like a regular hotel lake, then saw a ray flap it’s fin.

There are 14 lagoons filled with eight million gallons of ocean water and 50,000 aquatic animals.  It was just stunning, walking on the outside of a hotel, I saw the shark lagoon which was below a bar.  Patrons were casually drinking next to a rail and sharks below!  The water slides are impressive, one structure, the Power Station, had flower-like petals at the top of four towers.  I actually wandered into The Dig which had a table with explorer notes.  Which is actually the end of The Dig.  There isn’t stickers or wrist bands to indicate you paid admission.  I did pay later.

The Dig is on a lower level with massive windows.  I may have been too stunned to read any signage that made locations clear, but I eventually paid at the Atlantis Adventures desk at the clock tower and entered The Dig.  Passes are complimentary to hotel guests.  I have been to many aquariums from the Waikiki Aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, to the New York Aquarium at Coney Island.  Even the St. Andrews Aquarium in Scotland.  Monterey Bay Aquarium is brilliant in bringing the ocean inside, the beaches, waves, and the stunning windows that tower above you.  Still, it is theming that is impressive about The Dig, tropical species swimming around bull-headed statues.

Schools of fish swirling around statues, an astrobe, and rock formations.  Manta rays swooping past the sunken face of a statue.  Moray eels gasping while hanging out of pots. There are colorful tropical fish around an entwined sculpture.  The Atlantis theming is sprinkled throughout, there is a room with various diving suits out of a steampunk fantasy.  It would be interesting if the world premiere or a premiere for Aquaman was held at the Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas resort.  They hold many concerts and special events there.  Everyone deserves a chance to visit the Bahamas, a beautiful piece of paradise, and get a glimpse of Atlantis at Atlantis Paradise Island!
