Bettie Page sharpens her paranormal investigation skills in Bettie Page: The Alien Agenda! It features a cosplay cover and writing by Ani-Mia, cosplayer, writer for the Otaku USA magazine, and host of PREVIEWSWorld. Celor, artist of the Hack Slash vs. Chaos and Kiss Phantom Obsession mini-series, both by Dynamite. Bettie Page known as the Queen of the Pin-ups is a model and pop culture icon. She was a centerfold for Playboy in 1955, but she had left modeling around 1958. Her life was featured in the bio drama, The Notorious Bettie Page (2005), played by Gretchen Mol. The Dynamite Comic opens with Bettie Page in red bikini relaxing poolside at Beverly Hills Hotel. Page was known for vacationing in Miami. I would think she would shoot and relax at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami.
The attendant brings her another drink after her five hours shooting and says she has a message at the front desk. We get a closeup of Bettie as she takes a sip of her mojito. She gets a note from Colonel Westbrook. Then, she hears a helicopter that takes her to a meeting with Westbrook. Bettie mentions that they had met at Fort Lewis, a U.S. Army base in Tacoma, Washington. Her adventures are noted to be in Bettie Page & The Bigfoot Bandits, sounds like fun! Westbrook tells her confidential information about an incident in Roswell, New Mexico. This was in 1947 when Bettie Page had moved to New York to pursue acting. At night, cows are wakened by the crash of a celestial object, “Moo?”, love it! Westbrook mentions that it was a weather balloon, the official explaination, but unofficially a spacecraft!
The pilots were missing and soldiers checked the craft. Westbrook notes that the UFO (now known as Unexplained Aerial Phenomena - UAPs) was studied for around ten years in a hangar, Area 51? This is interesting because 1957 is when Bettie Page had disappeared for a time after a Senate investigation. The flying saucer looks like the classic 50’s UFO with a ball turret with ray gun? The 50’s Red Scare paranoia brought us sci fi with The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), War of the Worlds (1953), and Earth vs.The Flying Saucers (1956). They are able to enter the craft, there is a woman in a blue shirt who looks very suspicious with the other personnel who have found that the aliens documented human society. Still, they could not decode the alien language and scientists try to decode it, but only discover that the aliens have an unknown stockpile. I think of the Kanamit in the 1962 Twilight Zone episode, “To Serve Man.”
Westbook wants to know if Bettie is ready for this mission, she smiles, and signs on. He has assembled a team; “the best code breaker and the best archeologist” They expect her at the University of Washington. Westbrook gives her an expense account and transportation to any location. At a hotel in downtown Seattle, Bettie finds the colonel’s mysterious “sign”, a construction arrow that points her in a direction that leads to a Man in Black! She tries to follow him, slipping in and out of crowds, until she loses him in an alleyway. Bettie finds several folders on a crate. Later, she walks to the capus and reads the note to reach the office Professor Villaneuva. She finds two women there, the professor who prefers to be called Sofia, and an Asian woman, Young-Ja Kim. The other woman is the code breaker. Sofia has been on archelogical digs for the government, a female Indiana Jones!
The mysterious Man in Black has left folders to each of the team. They have the document spread on the floor with their wine glasses. Sofia goes over that they are searching for a cavern to hold the alien stockpile. She also says there is a connection to Egyptian culture. Bettie thinks there must be a clue with the hieroglyphics. Young-Ja says that she found a boat hieroglyphic and Bettie points out the heiroglyphic on a golden codex. This is basically an exposition dump that gives us some paranormal hints and may need a little more alien strangeness. Sofia finds the boat heiroglyphic that Young-Ja found, but they are stuck until Bettie suggests that they look at the “bigger picture.” The realization suddenly makes Sofia think of the Pyramid of Djoser. It is also known as the Step Pyramid, the oldest pyramid, in the Al Giza Desert. An interesting connection to Egypt and aliens, there is a wild belief that ancient aliens built the pyramids. A very Stargate (1994) concept. Bettie Page: The Alien Agenda assembles some fun concepts, characters especially Bettie, and some fine art!
