She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues to be funny and Wong with his new friend are perfect for a spin off show! Re: cap - “The People vs. Emil Blonsky”, Jen explains that Blonsky reverting back means he has control of the Abomination. Wong is told by a judge that helping a prisoner escape is a crime so he leaves through his portal! Jen leaves the court and asked by a reporter if she got her powers from a mafia hit! This is a nod to the comic book origin with Nicholas Trask shooting her in The Savage She-Hulk #1 (1980)! At the bar, Jen wants to be a normal lawyer, but Nikki tells her she just needs to do an interview. On her phone, Nikki shows Jen the story that she is carrying the Abomination’s baby. Pug sits down exhausted with Dennis’ case, Jen leans into camera and says, “Connecting A and B story, nice.” A funny Fourth Wall break on screenwriting! He asks them how they could have worked with Dennis. They say he is deluded. Pug has the idea to have them as witnesses!
Jen swears in and Pug asks about her working relationship with Mr. Bukowski. He always brought up his dating life. Pug brings up that a person of “reasonable intelligence” would know that the Light Elf, Runa, was not Megan Thee Stallion! Jen’s opinion is that Dennis is so delusional he would think he was dating the actual rapper of “Her.” The judge makes his ruling full damages to Dennis. He also sentences Runa for imprisonment for impersonating a judge. She runs off and Megan Thee Stallion says that she is only one. Pug, Dennis, and Jen are walking and Dennis asks them if he should date the real Megan Thee Stallion! He also wonders if there is a way to remove the Light Elf’s powers. Jen breaks the Fourth Wall with Dennis’ idea. The reporters are excited outside of the Supermax Prison. Inside, Jen is ready and the judge frees Emil Blonsky as long as he doesn’t transform into the Abomination and wear an inhibitor.
The groupies cheer. Emil says whatever happens, a story will be written about her. At Citizen News, the anchor, played by real life reporter, Bob DeCastro, interviews She-Hulk. Jen clarifies the name and the news line reads “says origin is a `funny story’”, love this episode! The anchor continues that next She-Hulk will tell her diet and exercise secrets! Afterwards, Jen is walking back home and then mugged by four men and transforms into She-Hulk. She faces the men with Asgardian weapons, the Wrecking Crew!, Wrecker (Nick Gomez), Thunderball (Justin Eaton), Piledriver, and Bulldozer (uncredited actors for the last two). The Wrecker first appeared in Thor #148 (1968), the Asgardian connection, and the supervillains teamed up in Defenders #17 (1974). Their weapons are useless against her, Thunderball uses a giant syringe that ends up getting bent! Then, we Jen with her new client, Megan Thee Stallion, as they dance to her song, “Body”, the best! We get exciting music as we see the night streets of Los Angeles and then see a magician, Donny Blaze (Rhys Coiro), meditating and levitating on stage.
Donny Blaze, his name is a play on Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider! The sparse crowd is just bored, he asks for a volunteer, and a very drunk Madisynn (Patty Guggenheim) wants to be on stage. His assistant (Leon Lamar) wants him to do “the thing”, Donny uses a Sling Ring to form a portal behind Madisynn. Now the audience claps, but Madisynn is unimpressed. This shifts to “Kathmandu, Nepal.” Wong is relaxing as Madisynn appears from the portal in the ceiling with a bloody heart. She wonders about the goblins and sees that Wong was watching The Sopranos spoiling the episode for him. Guggenheim's Madisynn reminds me of Zoey Deutch's Madison from Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). Smart actresses just know the right balance between annoying and funny! Wong is angry at Donny Blaze. Then, we return to Jen’s home as she says through the Fourth Wall that everyone loves Wong! Her father, Morris, enters with some equipment for her security! Jen isn’t worried about the Wrecking Crew and goes to work. On a computer, Jen’s profile is added to the matcher website in her She-Hulk identity!
Nikki enters to watch the interview again when Wong shows up. He says he needs her help with a “magician” which he emphasizes with air quotes, Benedict Wong is funny! Wong explains that Blaze was a former student of the Mystic Arts, but kicked out. He now works at the “Mystic Castle”, the Magic Castle in Hollywood is a private club. Jen starts taking notes as Wong is angry about “magicians” going around using Kamar Taj secrets. Jen asks Wong if there was an NDA or contract that was exclusive to the Mystic Arts. She asks him for his contact information and Wong produces his mystic business card, returning through the portal. At the bar, Jen has finished Wong’s cease and desist order, sitting with Nikki. A loser guy tries to ask them out on a date, but goes for drinks. Nikki asks for her matcher profile that has her corporate headshot. She starts swiping and tells Jen that she has to go through 500 swipes to get to more interesting dates. Nikki of course says that she should have her She-Hulk picture on matcher. The next day, Jen is at the office of Cornelius P. Willows, owner of the Mystic Castle. She has the cease and desist order, but of course it is Blaze’s assistant who repeats everything he says.
Blaze takes it and tries to make it disappear, Jen says it is in Cornelius’ shirt! Jen goes on a matcher date with a poser who said he stayed some months in New York. No joke about the Avengers there!? The next day at court, Judge Hanna (Suzanne Salhaney) doesn’t believe a magic trick is gross negligence. She asks for witnesses and Wong reluctantly opens a portal to Madisynn at a club. She is happy to see again Wongers! Jen takes her to the witness stand, she has a drink in her hand, and she hands the drink to the baliff. Madisynn is asked about Blaze’s magic show and going to a “fire land” to make a pact with a demon! The demon, named Jake?, opened the portal to Wongers and they became besties! Madisynn is a slight absurd version of the Kardashians with her Valley Girl speak. Jen’s defense is that it is not a magic trick, but real magic. So the goofball Blaze, his lawyer, and Cornelius start performing tricks. Wong explains the ramifications of using magic. Madisynn says, “Case closed!” Somehow, her performance is just funny! While the case goes on, Jen decides She-Hulk will get better results on matcher! She-Hulk: Attorney At Law episodes like “Is It Not Magic?” are just too funny, but the ep does need an overall direction to where this is all leading Jennifer Walters!
