1. Future State: Superman titles. These are Superman: Worlds At War #1-2, Mikel Janin art, and Superman: House of El #1 with art by Scott Godlewski, and also Action Comics 2021 Annual #1, Siya Oum joined Godlewski on art. #PhilipKennedyJohnson brings the far future of Superman with his lives as a gladiator on Warworld. This was a distant world that was introduced in DC Comics Presents #27 (1980) by Len Wein and Jim Starlin, the story continued with 28, and the aftermath is 29. The cover of Superman: Worlds at War #1 by Mikel Janin screamed out to me John Carter Warlord of Mars! Then, Superman: House of El has the descendants of Superman defending the Fortress of Sanctuary on the moon with the Warzoon survivors from Warworld against the Parademon army led by The Red King! https://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/07/action-comics-2021-annual-1-review.html
2. Future State: Aquaman #1-2 and now the six issue limited series Aquaman: The Becoming by Brandon Thomas. It introduced The Confluence, a dimension nexus of all water worlds and also Aquawoman, Andy Curry, the daughter of Aquaman and Mera. Jackson Hyde, has taken the mantle of Aquaman, and acts as mentor to Andy. Where is Arthur Curry and Mera? Future State had a significant time jump so I just accepted that they had left Andy’s training to Jackson. https://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/01/future-state-aquaman-1-review.html. Future State: Aquaman had the art of Daniel Sampere. There is far flung worlds with strange aquatic creatures. I think in the case of both of these Future State visions that the creators were breaking the characters out of the superhero box exploring sci fi and fantasy worlds while keeping the integrity of the original heroes.
3. Wonder Woman #770-779, “Afterworlds” by Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan with Travis Moore and other artists providing the art. The trio of heroes, Diana, Siegfried, the Viking-type hero with a heart of gold, and Ratatosk, the fierce squirrel are perfect for afterworld adventures! A favorite issue for me was #778, which I would sub-title, “Costume Changes in The Phantom Zone with Bat-Mite!”, a kitchen sink of fun! https://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/08/wonder-woman-778-review.html.
4. Superman `78 just fun continuing the Christopher Reeve film version of the characters. The point of expanding superhero films into comics is to get the “feel” of the movies while expanding with comic book level villains and situations. This is the best of them, but I would like to see a combo of Superman `78 and Batman `89. Heck, there should be a Crisis on Infinite Earths-type crossover with Batman `66 and Wonder Woman `77. Superman `78 is from the creative team of Robert Venditti and Wilfredo Torres. I really like the focus of Superman, no Fortress of Solitude, which would be helpful dealing with Brainiac. Bring in General Sam Lane, Cat Grant, and most of all Bibbo Bibowski! The bartender from Adventures of Superman #428 (1987)! Also, introduce Kelex, the Fortress robot that reminds of me H.E.R.B.I.E. from the Fantastic Four cartoon. Plus, bring in Krypto, the one real character missing from the Richard Donner films! http://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/08/superman-78-1-review.html
5. Batman `89 has such potential. The Tim Burton Batman resurged comic book movies to blockbuster status. The Superman films kinda sputtered out. I really like the Billy Dee Williams Two Face plus the Robin, except his name Drake Winston, the Burnside neighborhood, but bringing in Catwoman is the best! I would like the reporter to be identified. Is this Vicki Vale or someone else? Bring in Dr. Leslie Thompkins, she was a long time comics character that helps Bruce Wayne, she was played by Morena Baccarin in the Gotham series. Also, Lucius Fox. Wayne Industries is lost in the Batman `89 storyline. I hope they bring in Ace the Bat-Hound, he first appeared in Batman #92 (1955). How about Bat-Mite? Make him some morning cartoon show character if that is too far out of the “reality” of the movies. Some of the story is inconsistent and a little confusing by Sam Hamm with good art by Joe Quinones. http://geektruth.blogspot.com/2021/10/batman-89-2-review.html. Still, there is some good characters, movie hints, and art in the six issue series.
What this means for DC is looking not for veteran writers and artists, but find the ones that can refresh titles and characters while having fun. So this is just the comic book side of DC. I hope there is an update on Justice League Dark, Static Shock, and Zatanna movies. More than that if the New Gods movie has any traction. The best, BEST, news out of DC FanDome will be a tie-in special or limited series plus covers across titles of Superman and Lois!
