Strolling Through the (Theme) Park One Day: Short Trip to Ghost Town Alive!

Yesterday, I made a visit to Calico, otherwise known as Ghost Town, to catch up on Founder’s Day!  Ghost Town Alive! had begun at Knott’s Berry Farm on May 20th and lasts until September 5th.  It has been a long time since the summer event last appeared.  The buildings that are usually closed are open and it is great to walk in and see Goldie’s “Hotel”, the Post Office, and the Bank.  Ghost Town is a very familiar part of the park for me, I enter through there almost all of the time, but Ghost Town Alive! almost transforms it.  Ren Faire is immersive, but Ghost Town has guests stay in that part than the rest of the theme park.  Next time, I have to get the names of all of the Calico residents.  There is the sheriff, Skylar another sheriff, the mayor, a clerk, I recognized one woman at City Hall who was a deputy.

Calico celebrates Founder’s Day at Knott’s Berry Farm, photo by the author.

Then, there is the new school teacher, Miss Nell, post office worker, man at the assay office, Miss Lucy at Goldie’s Hotel, the banker, dress shop workers, and them no good bushwackers, the Mayfields!   You just wander into any building and start up a conversation.  At Ren Faire, the cosplayers will point out if you say, use a cellphone, or wear anything modern.  The Calico people ignore them.  I think two kids were cosplaying with Old West gear.  They should have a rental place to get some Western wear which is what they have at Ren Faire.  There is just some great details inside the buildings, a Morse Code poster in the Post Office, a bank vault is next to the teller window, and photos of Abraham Lincoln.  I walked to the Post Office and almost immediately got a note to give to a feller in a hat.  It was a 25 cent Ha! tax fer laffin.

Sheriff Skylar putting a varmit Mayfield in the pokey, author’s photo.

Miss Nell tol me to ask the Post Office for any packages, I brought one to the school house.  New to me was a barred cage and one of them Mayfields were stuck in there for a spell.  These quests are great and they really got kids running all over the place.  Most of the townspeople gathered to get kid volunteers to hold the Calico Gazette between shoulders to race and drop it off at a bucket!   I think many of them got over their shyness to talk to strangers, the townspeople, in a safe environment.  I noticed some symbols placed around various places around Calico.  Plus, there are playing cards in hats of different citizens.  Miss Nell had a singing lesson at 1:30.  I missed Miss Cameo Kate’s Western Burle-Q Revue at the Bird Cage Theatre.  At 5:30 p.m. there is the Hoedown outside of the Calico Saloon. Check out for more details: https://www.knotts.com/events/ghost-town-alive.  Ghost Town Alive! is a special event, no rides, no shows this time, but it was memorable fun!
