Black Lightning, “The Book of Consequences: Chapter One: Rise of the Green Light Babies”, Review!

The season two premiere (with a very long title) picks up with Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), Black Lightning, has returned to protect Freeland.  He finds out that his daughter, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) is becoming the superhero Thunder, and his younger daughter, Jennifer is also getting powers. The drug Green Light is found on the Freeland streets and the young people are kept in pods by the A.S.A. His family hunted by A.S.A. Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III), Synoide (Charibi Dean), and Painkiller (Jordan Calloway) attack the A.S.A. and Peter Gambi (James Remar) kills it’s leader, Martin Proctor (Gregg Henry).  The stasis pods are revealed by Lynn Stewart (Christine Adams).  Still, Tobias Whale has the secrets in Proctor’s briefcase!   This episodes is written and directed by Salim Akil.  We have the police brutally arresting Issa Williams (Myles Truitt), a “Green Light Baby”, and he is killed. Very topical.  A church assembly discusses the Green Light drug.  Jefferson is questioned about the school attack when he was away.  The school board closes Garfield High. Of course, we have to start out not at status quo, but with the school and really Tobias Whale taken away.

Lynn is questioned by the police about Green Light and the pods by Agent Odell (Bill Duke).  Jennifer wakes up and Anissa shows her a cell phone pic of her floating with powers.  Syonide gets a shoot out with Kara Fowdy (Skye P. Marshall) over the briefcase in a parking garage.  They roll out and face each other with empty guns and then get into a fight.  Syonide has some capoeira moves and batons while Kara has spiked heels which are deadly to the assassin.  At their home, Lynn talks to Jefferson about Jennifer’s powers, she wants a therapist.  At Gambi’s shop, Kara identifies him as Peter Esposito, the killer for the A.S.A., she wants out of the organization in exchange for the briefcase.  Deputy Chief Henderson (Damon Gupton) gives Jefferson the truth.  At church, the families that their children will be kept in the pods, they will have sue the government and $500,000 would be needed. Anissa argues with her father over the fate of the pods.  He wants to go after Tobias.  Lynn wants to confront her daughter over her powers.  Jennifer gets frustrated and blasts her mother, then runs away!  She is alone on the roof outside her window and Lynn comes to comfort her.  Later, Lynn checks her wound in the mirror, she tells her husband that she asked Gambi to check on the pods.  Jefferson is not acting very super-hero-y.

In a drug den, scores of men are taken down by the masked figure, Thunder, who takes their money in a backpack.  Shifting the action to Thunder takes away from Jefferson’s heroism.  He lets things happen and doesn’t take action.  Black Lightning meets with Henderson who has worked out that he is Jefferson Pierce.  He takes off his mask.  Henderson asks if Lynn is Thunder.  He asks again if it is Anissa.  Henderson walks away. Jefferson watches an editorial commentary while in bed.  He tells Lynn that Henderson figured out his identity.  Jefferson embraces Lynn and pulls her to the bed.  Anissa comes home with the backpack of money and puts it away.   Gambi shows Jefferson Kara’s picture and tells him the situation.  Gambi has not located Tobias.  Jennifer gets a text from Khalil.  Church is interrupted by the hooded figure and a gun is pulled on her.  She dumps out the money.  No villain, two fights without the main character, the episode is kinda slow. At the Blackbird Funeral Parlor, the body taken away, Issa gets out of the body bag.  His mother doesn’t think this is her Issa. He runs away as shots are fired.

Jennifer gets a picture of Issa.  Jennifer’s hands are glowing as well as her eyes.  Keisha. Agent Odell is not impressed by Lynn and says he will check on her daughter.  Later, Lynn and Anissa are in her room, Jefferson walks in and sees Jennifer in the bathtub surrounded by an energy glow.  Jefferson reaches in and hugs his daughter, surrounded by the energy, until it dissipates.  A strange, but poignant family moment.  Jefferson is staring off as Henderson tells him that Garfield is permanently closed.  He offers to step down as principal.  Night, we have Issa alone, during a storm.  Lynn is checking on the pods.  Anissa gets the money into the backpack.  The Robin Hood superhero.  Jennifer floats above her bed.  Kara with night vision sees Tobias.  She takes out two pistols.  He hits her a harpoon in the stomach and pulls her forward.  She snaps it off and slides under Tobias to jump through the window!  Black Lightning never uses his powers in this episode, Jefferson is the least interesting character here, the characters who move the story along are his older daughter and wife.  Henderson has solved the mystery of Black Lighting, but we don’t get how he deals with it.  Gambi is just shows up briefly.  There is a loss of focus with the show, nothing further happens with the pods, the briefcase is still a mystery.  Still, there are moments, action scenes, and the topical police violence that has potential for the show.
