Superman & Lois, “The Best of Smallville”, Review!

We had at the end of last episode, Morgan Edge’s associate, opening the mines.  It is early morning, fall, on the Kent farm.  The boys head to the kitchen as Lois watches the news reports on Superman's activity.  He flies through the corn field and the family begin to shuck corn stalks.  Clark is excited to donate the crops to Smallville.  Jonathan notes that Eliza is finally coming for a visit.  At Smallville High, Jonathan and Jordan meet with Sarah.  She awkwardly tries to ask Jordan out to the festival.  Jonathan gets a call from Eliza who dumps him over the phone.  One son up, one down.  Clark tells Lois he wants to make the dinner table into a work area for her.  Chrissy has called Lois about Sharon Powell and her son.  At the Gazette, Derek (Clayton James) explains that he was found.  He is jittery at his mother’s touch.  Sarah wants to shut down the story.  The base’s computer voice says that Lois Lane has been found to Captain Luthor.

At the community center, Lana is helping with donations, Sharon and Derek stop by, but Derek walks off with pain.  His eyes flare red and he blasts the walls with heat vision!  A side effect of Edge’s super army?  At the farm, Clark is putting away his mother’s things and flashes back to Martha talking about Lana.  Teenage Clark (Dylan Kingwell) hears thieves trying to take boxes of stolen goods.  He arrives there with a ski mask hiding his identity.  A gunman has a shotgun, but it’s taken away at superspeed.  The other criminal tries to shoot Clark, but he knocks away the bullet.  Now, Clark hears a distress call, a fire!  Clark uses x-ray vision to see the fire and uses super breath to freeze burning wreckage.  Later, Clark tells Lois that the donations were destroyed.  He also says he saw Sharon Powell at the fire.  Jordan explains that Eliza dumped Jonathan.  Lois checks on her son.  Still, Jonathan is upset and wants to be alone.  Lois checks on Kyle still in firefighter gear.  She shows him a picture of Derek.  Lois tells Chrissy and then is interrupted by Captain Luthor!

Captain Luthor says he is a reporter and worked at Luthor Corp.  He says he wanted to talk with Lois and investigate Morgan Edge.  She gives him her card if he checks out the mines.  Chrissy finds that Derek has disappeared and left her a text.  Chrissy uses Sharon’s phone to check on his location.  Jordan kinda tells his father about his date.  Jonathan wants to move back to Metropolis.  He is angry to be kept in the small town.  Jonathan wants to stay at Jordan Kelso’s place, but Clark nixes it.  Teenage Clark has an argument with his mother about his father.  Kyle tells Lana about Mitch who was hurt in the fire.  She doesn’t like that he was drinking.  Sarah is ready to leave for the Harvest Festival.  The boys have arrived and Jonathan is given a flask of alcohol, Superboy doesn’t drink!   Kyle on the couch sings Sarah a song in Spanish.  Derek is kissing Leslie Larr and they go into the mines with Chrissy watching them.  Leslie is a mystery and actually Lesla-Lar who first appeared in Action Comics #279 (1961)!

Clark turns off music in his sons’ room and flashes back to his teenage days.  Martha Kent shows Clark a case of a red crystal!  At the Festival, Jordan meets with Sarah, she takes him to try some elephant ears.  This is fair food, circles of fried dough with cinnamon.  Chrissy sees Leslie place Derek to be scanned in a machine.  On some hay bales, Jordan is happy to be with Sarah who tries to explain about her life.  Jonathan, drunk, walks up to his brother.  Sarah is angry that they are drunk.  Jonathan tries to apologize.  The two brothers walk away.  Lois is enjoying the festival food with Clark.  He knows that Jonathan has been drinking.  Lois is angry and wants them to get a ride share home.  Chrissy calls and tells Lois about Derek and Leslie Larr.  Clark is gone and Superman appears at the machine!  We don’t get Morgan Edge, but the Smallville and Captain Luthor stories are starting to collide!

Derek flies away and Superman pursues him.  Captain Luthor detects the Derek ignites a barn and corn fields with heat vision which is neutralized by Superman’s super breath.  Captain Luthor is pursuing them and sets the RV to auto drive while he takes out weapons.  Derek tells Kal-El that he is no long alone.  Captain Luthor sends up a blast that knocks down Derek and Superman.  Derek’s face cracks with red energy and he falls.  Captain Luthor walks up with a gun, but sees nothing at the crater.  The effects are much more of a cinematic quality than the earlier Flash episodes.  Later, Jonathan tries to apologize and Clark forgives him.  He admits that he left Smallville and says that he regrets his decision.  Clark tries to have Jonathan give Smallville more time.  He gives Jonathan a box, the one Martha, Martha!, gave to him.  Later, Clark tells Lois that Derek said he was “resurrected.”  At the Festival streets, Lana tells Lois and Clark that Morgan Edge has replaced the donations.  She also has a presentation to make and this is just wow, what a powerful moment of the Superman mythos!  There is more to Captain Luthor!  Sarah admits to ruining the date and sends Jordan to the Friend Zone, worse than the Phantom Zone.  May 18th is the next episode, can’t wait!

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, “The New World Order”, Review!

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the MCU’s second show and keeps the story going in Captain America-style action and characters!  The series is created by Malcolm Spellman and directed by Kari Skogland.  Spellman wrote and produced episodes of Empire.  Skogland directed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale.   This is the pilot episode and the name of the show has hints of the real life spy thriller, The Falcon and the Snowman (1985).  It opens with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) ironing a dress shirt.  He puts on his jacket and then eyes Captain America’s shield on his bed.  Sam puts it in the carrying case that we saw in Avengers: Endgame (2019).  He hears the conversation he had with Steve Rogers in that film.  This shifts to the clouds where we get a transport plane, it appears to be an Airbus A400M Atlas.

Onboard, The Falcon, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), is getting briefed on the criminal organization LAF that is threatening one of their liasons, Captain Vasant.  The Falcon has to stop them without the military being directly involved.  Mackie was of course in Avengers: Endgame, but he one of his last films was the action movie, Outside the Wire.  He is informed that Lt. Torres will be his contact. Sam opens the cargo bay and drops out of the plane!  The Falcon unfolds his wings and jet engine.  Torres (Danny Ramirez) is following his flight from military transport on the ground.   Ramirez is in going to be in the upcoming film, Top Gun: Maverick.  His character was introduced in Captain America: Sam Wilson #3 (2016).  Sam flies over to the transport plane and finds that pilot is killed.  The hijacker pilot points out that he saw someone to Georges Batroc (Georges St-Pierre).  The character was last seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).  Sam can see with his visor heat signature that two hijackers have Captain Vasant.

He sends out his drone, Redwing, which we first saw in Ant-Man (2015).  It uses lasers to cut through the plane’s hull.  The Falcon goes into action taking on the hijackers.  One of them uses a machine gun, Sam’s wings act as a shield, the ricochets strike the hijacker pilot.  The plane starts to go down, The Falcon checks on the soldier, Captain Vasant (Miles Brew).  He is taken on by Batroc who also fought Captain America.  The hijackers put on wingsuits and take along the bound captain.  The Falcon flies after them.  This is a harrowing pursuit through a canyon.  Two helicopters join the chase.  The Falcon takes care of them with the help of Redwing.  Batroc and the other hijackers have reached another helicopter.  The Falcon takes them on and Batroc takes away Captain Vasant.  Torres warns Sam that he is approaching Libyan airspace.  The Falcon has to go after the helicopter with Captain Vasant as another armed helicopter fires missiles at him!  A difficult situation, but The Falcon is a hero!

This picks up at a hotel, an Asian man leaves his friends to go work on his session, a teacher?  A guard is ripped through a wall by a cybernetic arm.  The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) starts killing a team of an official.  Stan who was also seen in the MCU with Avengers; Endgame and his last film was the romance, Monday (2020).  He catches the man with his cybernetic arm this is front of the Asian man trying to get into his room.  The Winter Soldier says, “Hail Hydra” before the man is killed.  He turns to see the Asian man trying to use his room key.  The Winter Soldier takes out his gun.  The gunshot wakens James Bucky Barnes at night in his apartment.  He is asked about his nightmares by Dr. Raynor (Amy Aquino).  She was in the series Picket Fences.  It is a condition of his pardon for his progress to be monitored by a therapist.  This is seen in some close-ups of the characters’ faces.  Dr. Raynor starts writing in her notebook and James admits he crossed off a name in his notebook, Senator Atwood (Rebecca Lines).  He says that she was in Hydra and he had helped her as the Winter Soldier.

Bucky places a device in her car under the tire hub.  He hears her corrupt conversation of wanting to “silence” Congressman Lockhart to an associate.  Dr. Raynor goes over her rules for Bucky, but he sort of bends them.  He took control of Atwood’s car.  Bucky explains to Dr. Raynor that he only gave evidence to convict her.  He harshly takes care of the associate.  Bucky goes over Dr. Raynor’s last rule and tells Senator Atwood it with a smile.  He crosses off her name in his notebook.  Armed soldiers surround the senator’s car.  Dr. Raynor asks for his phone and sees that he ignored texts from Sam. Bucky admits, “I had a little calm in Wakanda.”  On the street, he meets up with Yori Nakajima (Ken Takemoto).  He was also on the action series, Hit.  Bucky isn’t alone, but he is friends with Yori.  At dinner, Yori sets up a date with restaurant worker, Miki Ishikawa (Leah).  She was also in the show Hit.  Yori has memories of his son.  I didn't make the connection that his son was the man the Winter Soldier assassinated.  We haven’t gotten to how the friendship between Yori and Bucky started, maybe later.

Delacroix, Louisiana, Sam is driving in his truck to the shrimp docks where he meets his family.  This is his nephews, who call him Uncle Sam(!), and also his sister, Sarah Wilson (Adepero Oduye).  Her film credits include the film, Geostorm (2017).  The character first appeared in Captain America #134 (1971).  She tries to tell him that she has to sell the family boat, Paul & Darlene, named after their parents.  Sarah mentions that her brother was missing during the Blip and she was busy trying to keep the business going.  Sam wants to keep the boat since it means family to him.  Later, they are working on the boat, and Sam brings up the loans she made for the boat. This brings up the question that even though Sam is the hero, he was missing, it is a prisoner of war situation.  We also get into how the Avengers get paid, I’m sure Sam could ask James to tap into Stark funds and save the boat.  Sam offers his sister to help set up a bank loan. The situation is real world more than super hero.  Bucky has to deal with the awkwardness of his date, he is an hundred years old!  The duo is apart for the episode, but this is just the setup, there are characters to be brought in later, but this is only the pilot.  The Falcon and the Winter Soldier shows some MCU action, but has the time to develop its heroes as people!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Review!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League has started streaming on HBO Max and it is worth the wait!  This is one of the most unusual director cut movie stories.  Zack Snyder had to stop filming in May 2017.  Joss Whedon was brought in for re-writes and then complete the film by directing in April 2016.  The movie’s budget rose to $300 million and was finished in October 2016.  It was released on November 2017.  Part of this studio hybrid was that scenes were teased in trailers, but missing in the theatrical cut.  The US box office was a disappointing $229 million.  Still, I thought there were enough memorable scenes to be satisfying: http://geektruth.blogspot.com/2018/09/retro-review-justice-league.html.  There was a campaign for the Snyder Cut and the opportunity of the HBO Max streaming service had the twist that Snyder announced the new filming and cut in May 2020.  There was a significant budget for additional shooting with many of the actors brought back to film new scenes.  The story is by Snyder, Chris Terrio (also screenplay), along with Will Beall who co-wrote the screenplay for Aquaman (2018).  At four hours, it could have cuts made, but there are scenes left out of Movie A that harms some of the story continuity.

The opening of the movie has Superman (Henry Cavill) pierced by the Kryptonite spear, he screams sending out sonic waves.  Lois Lane (Amy Adams) watches him.  Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) also sees his death.  Batman (Ben Affleck) looks on with his rifle.  This is of course the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) directed by Snyder and nicknamed BvS (Beavis).  Superman’s dying cries spread through the ruins of Metropolis.  It is heard by a young man in a track suit with cybernetics (Ray Fisher).  Cyborg is given more of a relatable side with his back story.  The downside is that the CG cyborg body still skews to an impossible to be a man in a suit with too-thin arms and legs.  He turns to see the whirring light in the next room.  Superman’s sonic waves pass by a partially submerged Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).  He sees the image of three Mother Boxes assembled by the figure of Steppenwolf.  The sonic waves continue underwater passing an Atlantean soldier.  It is heard by Mera (Amber Heard).  She turns to see the Mother Box shuddering and then stops.  The waves continue to the island of Themyscira.  It goes into the dome with the Mother Box guarded by Amazons.  The wave strikes the Mother Box and the Amazons ready their weapons.  The Mother Box rattles and Phillippus (Ann Ogbomo) approaches it.

A crack of light runs down the Mother Box, Phillippus steps back, and sends word to the queen.  Interesting to see the death of Superman affect everyone and set up the Mother Boxes.  Breaking camp, is a horse rider, in snowy Iceland.  The music is by Tom Holkenberg (who worked on Beavis) which is an improvement over the Danny Elfman score, more dramatic.  The rider reveals himself to be Bruce Wayne, Batman, and looks down at an Icelandic town.  Bruce walks towards a building, the pub, and this moves to “Part 1, Don’t Count on It, Batman.”  We have his business card being considered by Icelandic elder, he gives it to another bearded man, a translator (Jason Momoa).  The assembled people laugh at his offer to see the person who arrived with the King Tide.  The elder asks him to leave and Bruce defies him also speaking Icelandic.  The translator holds Bruce against the wall and he identifies him as Arthur Curry, the Aquaman.   He walks and talks with Bruce, but doesn’t want any part of his alliance.  Arthur takes off his sweater for an ice cold dip and then is suddenly gone.  Next, it is night with Martha Kent (Diane Lane), Martha!, going to her truck and trailer.  She is leaving the gravestone of her son.  If you are not depressed at this point, she passes the sign of the foreclosure of her farm.

A helicopter drops off Bruce and he meets with Alfred (Jeremy Irons) from a white jet.  Bruce says that Arthur rejected his offer and Alfred says that it is only two in the draft.  They board a black jet.  Then, we have a close-up of a coffee, Lois Lane takes it from the coffee house.  She gives the coffee to a police officer, Jerry (Marc McClure), and then walks over to the Superman memorial.  Jerry?, a nod to Superman creator Jerry Siegel?  This cuts to a bridge with the Superman black banner, I remember this scene from the theatrical release.  This follows two white trucks.  This is the gunmen walking to takeover the museum.  There is gunfire as the museum patrons are cut down.  The leader brings in a group of school girls to be taken as hostages.  We have Wonder Woman standing on the statue of justice.  The leader opens the case to activate a bomb.  The language is just to push for the R rating though there are some bloody moments.  A gun man is pulled up by the Lasso of Hestia and he explains the plan.  Wonder Woman shatters through the door, strangely there is a wind blowing through her hair even after the blast.

The slow motion speeds up almost comically with the Wonder Woman theme from Beavis.  She takes down some of the gunmen, takes the bomb case and flies upwards crashing through the ceiling.  There is a nice shot of Wonder Woman flying upwards and then flinging the case as she descends out of focus.  Then, an explosion with the overused cougar scream.  The hostages just look up, not much reaction, the leader takes up a machine gun, the group all stays together to be shooting targets.  Then, we get Wonder Woman dropping down to deflect a bullet with her bracelets.  He switches to automatic fire and Wonder Woman moves in slow motion to deflect the bullets, takes one in the back, and pushes a hostage away.  The leader reloads and Wonder Woman brings her bracelets together in her super move.  The face of the building explodes sending the rubble down on the police cars along with the leader’s hat.  Wonder Woman checks on the group of school kids.  One girl asks if she can be like Wonder Woman and Diana replies, “You can be anything you want to be.”  A much better sequence except for the beginning than the theatrical. Wonder Woman is not the leader like in the 2017 version, this is left to Batman to take charge, but she is still a great fighter.

This moves back to Themyscira, the Amazon riders reach the temple including Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen).  Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli) notes the status of the Mother Box.  Suddenly, it starts whirring again.  Hippolyta orders the Amazons to be ready for battle.  The energy column of the Boom Tube drops down from the sky.  Amazons around the island see it.  This is a better depiction of the Amazons as a people than the movie release.  Parademons start swarming out of the Boom Tube and then we have the appearance of Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds).  He announces the “Great Darkness”, this refers to The Great Darkness Saga that was in Legion of Super-Heroes #290-294 (1982), nice.  Steppenwolf says they will know fear, Hippolyta tells her Amazons “to show him your fear!”, yes!, this is Amazons as the lethal warriors in Wonder Woman (2017).  I still don’t get why they have fought Darkseid’s legions in the past, but use bows and arrows against laser guns.  The Amazons pile on Steppenwolf, he tries to reach out for the Mother Box, but it is taken by Hippolyta.  The wounded Epione (Eleanor Matsuura) tells her queen to seal the temple.  The Amazons smash through the wooden supports with hammers and Hippolyta slides through at the last moment.

Hippolyta races with the Mother Box away from the temple that crumbles into the ocean.  She hands the Mother Box to Amazon riders and then looks solemnly out to the lost Amazons.  The sacrifice of the Amazons is more clearly felt in this version.  The waves stirred by the fallen temple is a weak effects shot, but no matter.  The Parademons and Steppenwolf leap from the wreckage.  The chase begins with Steppenwolf getting brutal with CG horses.  Hippolyta rides to help with the Mother Box Keep Away, but Steppenwolf manages to take it, before legions of Amazons ride in.  Then, we get “Part 2 The Age of Heroes”, the Boom Tube appears at an abandoned nuclear plant.  Steppenwolf appears with his Mother Box.  He inserts the Mother Box into a broken wall and it corrupts the nuclear plant.  He sends the Parademons to find the other Mother Boxes to form “the Unity.”  Bruce is shaving his beard, his razor looks like Steppenwolf’s helmet, and asks Alfred about the “kid at the liquor store.”  Alfred has been trying to track Barry Allen of Central City.  He thinks Bruce is obsessing over what Lex Luthor told him.  Bruce says it really is the promise he made to Superman.  He fears that the invasion has already begun.

Then, there is an overhead look at a stadium, that goes to a scientific lab.  Silas Stone (Joe Morton) leaves S.T.A.R. Labs saying goodbye to the maintenance worker, Howard (Anthony Wise).  He in turn sees a hole in roof and comes upon a Parademon.  No security for the breach?  This turns to Themysicra, Amazons are bringing a long box to Hippolyta.  She is presented the Arrow of Artemis, a harpoon-long arrow.  She ignites the arrow and sends it from Themysicra through the clouds.  This makes more sense than the earlier version since it is a magic arrow.  It strikes the floor of a Greek temple and sets a fire.  Diana is working on touching up a statue at the Louvre.  Reports come in about the fire at a temple in Crete.  A reporter calls it a shrine to the Amazons.  Military officials are checking the breach at S.T.A.R. Labs when Silas arrives.  He talks to his colleague, Ryan Choi (Ryan Zheng), this is the character who will become the Atom in DCU: Brave New World #1 (2006).  He was played by Osiric Chau in the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.  An official questions Silas about a stolen object.  He is shown the Superman ship and also sketch of the thieves from a witness.  Others were taken from the lab.  Silas returns home to his apartment and warns his son, Victor, about the break-in.  He is in his track suit and we can see the red light from his cybernetics.  I like in flight Cyborg has a helmet that locks on to help him breathe.

Diana arrives at the temple and takes the Arrow of Artemis.  She makes a torch and lands down in a cavern.  The torch reveals an impression of the arrow in a door, she places the Arrow of Artemis, and this opens the door.  Diana enters a chamber that reveals the history of the ancient battle and ultimately a depiction of Darkseid.  A storm tosses a small boat and it is about to sink.  The captain tries to make a distress call as his boat is about to go under.  Aquaman appears on top of the sinking boat.  He brings the man into the Icelandic bar, the fisherman who of course is dazed, and gets some whiskey.  Arthur heads out into the storm, waves crash, and he is suddenly propelling through the ocean.  I’m not clear what is the propulsion, Atlantean body jet pack?  He accelerates past fish to a ruined temple.  I like the underwater effects with particulate matter and distortion better than Aquaman.  He sees the statue of a king with a trident.  Arthur hears the voice of Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and walks through his water bubble.  He rejects his role as king and leaves that to his brother, Orm, but Vulko wants him to protect the Mother Box.  Vulko offers Arthur his mother’s trident and throws it down.  The bubble dissolves and Vulko swims away.

At the nuclear plant, Steppenwolf calls for DeSaad.  The hooded figure (voiced by Peter Guinness) appears from the broken wall.  This is the twisted scientist who works for Darkseid.  He was introduced in Forever People #2 (1971) and appeared in Smallville played by Steve Byers.  Steppenwolf wants to return home and DeSaad says he has to conquer more worlds for his betrayal.  Steppenwolf says Earth has no Lanterns or Kryptonians, nice connection, and we get a sense of the villain more than the theatrical version.  At a dock in Gotham City, Bruce is working on a ship, as Diana walks in.  She tells him about the invasion in the past, this is still an unspecified time, thousands of years ago.  We see the flashback of Zeus (Sergi Constance) giving Ares his axe, Atlanteans whom Diana says before they went underwater, and Amazons.  Zeus throwing thunderbolts strangely reminds me of the Immortals (2011) movie.  Darkseid (Ray Porter) lands and strikes his weapon causing a volcanic shock wave.  Diana explains about the three Mother Boxes coming together in the Unity.  Queen Hippolyta leads the attack with a Green Lantern and all of the others.  This is a terrific battle, more clear than the released film, Darkseid is defeated and Zeus shatters the Unity.  The Mother Boxes are separated.  Then, we get Diana asking Bruce about the other heroes.

Next, we get “Part 3 Beloved Mother, Beloved Son.”  A truck drives into Central City, the listing is “Gard’ner Fox”, I nice nod to Gardner Fox, the co-creator of the Justice League of America.  Heading to a pet store for his job interview is Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), he bumps into Iris West (Kiersey Clemons).  I do like the moment at the truck accident when Barry sees Iris suspended in time and in the air.  The film really needed Barry earlier, a youthful contrast to the brooding Cyborg, similar to the Batman and Superman duo.  The Flash is more of a hero in this cut.  At the pet store, the owner sees the broken window, the accident, and Barry feeding the hot dog to some dogs in a pen.  A funny, light moment with some great superhero action.  Atlanteans are being dragged by Parademons through waves on a beach.  Steppenwolf questions the Atlantean.  He tosses the Atlantean (his back is bloody, but not his mouth?) and then uses a spider-like device to project the location of the Mother Box.  It seems random, but this gives more a dimension to Atlanteans than Aquaman.  Still, two ancient people have knowledge of the Mother Box, but no humans?  It is a slow start, but really moves when the story goes into familiar territory.  The expanded and missing scenes give more context to the story.  Plus, there are cameos that give more scope to the film.  Though there is still some silliness, the moments are still memorable.  A bit long, but Zack Snyder’s Justice League leans heavy into the superhero drama, but has some great moments!

Blade Runner: Origins #1 Review!

Blade Runner is an incredible world with the 1982 Ridley Scott film and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and this comic book peeks at the Blade Runner world before the movies!  It is written by K. Perkins, Mellow Brown, and Mike Johnson.  Perkins previously wrote for Supergirl with Mike Johnson and is working on the Paper Girls series for Amazon.  Johnson co-wrote the comic book, Blade Runner 2029, with screenwriter Michael Green who has creative consultant on this comic.  The art by is Fernando Dagnino who has worked on Justice League: Generation Lost.  He provided artwork for one of the covers with a moody cover of the first blade runner with a flashing Spinner at his eye, and holographic and ghostly faces in the foreground.  One of the questions of comics adapting film material is how it fits in the world of the movie.  This one fits seemlessly in terof art and story.

The original Blade Runner featuring Rick Deckard was set in 2019, the sequel had K wandering the Los Angeles of 2049, it had three short films; Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run Blade Runner 2029 featured the Blade Runner, Aahna “Ash” Ashina, all of these stories offer a complete picture of Blade Runner world.  You can look at these stories separately, of course the original film was based on the Philip K. Dick novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?  (1968), if you want more of the Blade Runner world, see them all.  There is a prologue page that explains the Tyrell Corporation creating the Replicant.  Then, the formation of the Blade Runner Units, and that this is the story of the first Blade Runner.  His story is in Los Angeles, 2009.  It begins with the The Siege of Kalanthia, 2007, this was an off-world colony.  There were only hints of what happened outside of Earth and this colony was hinted at in the short film, Blade Runner Black Out 2022 and Blade Runner 2049.

We see a stand off with a soldier holding his pistol which looks like the PKD (Steyr Pflager Kasumata Series-D Blaster) used by Rick Deckard.  He is taking cover behind a crate as helmeted soldiers fire at him.  There are bodies scattered around the hangar.  We see from his name badge that his name is Moreau, he has a short crop of blond hair, and he checks on his wounded soldier, Captain Avery.  Moreau puts a helmet on Avery who points out the Tyrell crate that is to opened as a last resort.  There is “Genetic Replicants” on the crate.  Avery tells Moreau to hold down the South Hall while he opens the crate.   There is a tight panels as we see Moreau in his suit going to the South Hall, he hears screaming and gunfire, the hissing sound makes me think of Ripley’s space suit in Alien (1979).  It looks like there is red mist and this resolves to droplets of blood!  Moreau is stunned to see the slaughter, there are two Replicants, one a male with spiky, blond hair and a female with short, red hair.  They wear form-fitting, black suits. The female Replicant says to Moreau, “You’re welcome”!   This is a short scene, a tease, but we finally get to the see the off-world colonies of Blade Runner!

This shifts to Los Angeles, 2009, we get a close-up of a woman’s face, catatonic and scarred.  We see Moreau at her bedside in the hospital and he knows that Dante, a hospital worker, is about to enter the room of Dante’s wife, Nia.  The next page is Los Angeles in sunset, about to construct the megapolis city in 2019.  There is some great design work by Dagnino that also captures some of the visuals of the films.  Moreau in trenchcoat heads to the rain swept headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department, a normal looking building, not elevated into the sky like the movies.  He is working on his cases, identified as Detective Moreau, not Blade Runner yet.  I hope that the origin of the name is revealed.  It didn’t make sense in the other stories.  The name sounded more like ice skaters.  He is called into an office, a chief?, who assigns him to a suicide case at the secretive Tyrell Corporation.

Moreau arrives at Tyrell, flashes his badge, and is escorted by a woman with glasses and business attire.  She takes him to the room with the body, the engineer, Dr. Kine, hung up by cables. The assistant says her name is Effie Koropey who is of course shaken by the death.  They are interrupted by a woman in a white suit, Ilora Stahl, who takes over with a smile.  She sends away Effie and answers Moreau’s questions.  Ilora has already sent files to the police department, but of course Moreau had to witness the scene first hand.  We get some facework that has the European detail and shadows, but I also sense the touches of Kevin Nowlan’s style.  Moreau leaves Tyrell out in the rain and heads toward the club, La Plume Sauvage, Wild Feather in French.  It is industrial with green lighting and birds in globes while performers and wait staff are in bird costumes.  The stage performer joins Moreau as he is drinking at the bar.  She looks like the Joker and carries a toucan on her shoulder.  Hearing Tyrell, the performer warns Moreau.  He is slowly drawn into a mystery that involves a Replicant.

Superman & Lois, “Haywire”, Review!

Last episode, Lois’ investigation into Morgan Edge led to a motel with a superhuman who was a match for Superman!  We flashback to Saskatchewan, Canada, six years ago, Humvees race under fire by what looks like meteors.  A commander, Morgan Edge, has his soldier suddenly stop the Humvees.  Edge sees in a crater, a red crystal, he says “and now the resurrection begins.”  If this is Red Kryptonite, then it has strange effects on a Kryptonian.  It first appeared in Adventure Comics #255 (1958).  This shifts to his face watching a Smallville football game in the rain.  Kyle Hutchinson is excited about Edge’s work proposal.  Edge eyes Lana coaching the cheerleaders.   He wants Lana to join them in dinner and they walk away.  Still, they are seen by Lois Lane and Chrissie Beppo.  They are joined by Lois father, General Sam Lane, he sees Clark helping out on the field.  Side note: Chrissie's last name is unusual, Beppo is the name of the Super-Monkey, so it must be a fun reference, Beppo was introduced in Superboy #76 (1959).

The coach sends out Jordan reassured by his father.  Sarah is also watching from the stands.  Jordan plows through players knocking down the football takes it up to score a touchdown.  Clark puts his arm around Jonathan.  Later, at the house, Sam is angry at Jordan on the football team.  He is worried about Jordan having powers.  Sam tells Clark that the military is afraid of Superman.  General Lane says without Superman in Metropolis has made it dangerous with Intergang.  They are transporting prisoners including Thaddeus Killgrave.  He is a super villain introduced in Superman #19 (1988).  Clark refuses to escort them and says he doesn’t work for the military.  Sam offers to stay at the house.  At the diner, Jordan is cheered on by his teammates, Jonathan tells Sarah that he doesn’t like football.  Taj  “Tag” Harris (Wern Lee) is between them mulling over his broken arm from the bonfire explosion caused by Jordan’s heat vision.  He almost gets into a fight with a player angry at his lack of money.

At the dinner, Edge talks with Lana, he says her return to Smallville has lowered her potential, not nice.  Chrissie looks at the latest edition of the Smallville Gazette.  She tells Lois that it is a good story.  They are interrupted by Leslie Larr (Stacey Farber) serving them papers.  She is the mysterious woman who is connected to Morgan Edge.  Chrissie has to hold off the story.  Tag returns home, looks at his football trophy, and then tries to cut off his cast.  His arm suddenly shudders at super speed!  This reminds me of Smallville with other characters dealing with super powers.  The next day, Clark practices football with his sons and uses his super speed.  Jonathan feels that he is benched.  Lois sees Clark and wants his involvement with the story.  She is headed to the mines to counter Edge.  Kyle enjoys that Lois’ story was cut from the newspaper.  Lana sides with Lois and wonders why Kyle didn’t watch over her with the Edge dinner conversation.  She walks away.

Lois drives the truck to the Shuster Mines and meets with Morgan Edge.  Of course Joe Shuster is the co-creator of Superman.  It may be that the mines contain the meteor fragments.  She doesn’t like his “fake” British accent, funny.  Lois threatens to reveal her information, even sued, it would be known through discovery.  Edge wants her to back down.  The coach plays the game film, he says it could have been Harris who made the winning play.  General Lane opens his laptop to check on the location of Killgrave.  The prisoner (Brendan Fletcher) is bearded with glasses in a strait jacket.  Fletcher was previously Stanley Dover, a serial killer, in Arrow.  He spits out something synethic he made at the prison and counts down!  At the restrooms, Jonathan goes to check on Tag, he is in the stall with his arm moving at super speed.  The cast shatters.  Clark hears something.

General Lane sees the attack on the transport.  He activates the Superman signal and informs Clark that Intergang has attacked the transport.  Gunmen are shooting the soldiers in smoke and one cuts Thaddeus’ jacket off.  At the restroom, Tag has to explain he took off his cast to Jonathan and Clark.  He hears the escape of Thaddeus and tells Jonathan that he has to leave.  Thaddeus breathes on a drone that flies up.  Superman flies to a Metropolis street.  He sees the drone with a warning by Thaddeus.  Superman is listening to a throbbing noise and searches the streets by the sky.  General Lane is about to leave the house and says to the boys that their father is special.  He shouldn’t be distracted by them.  At the Smallville Community Center, Kyle wants support for Edge and the mines.  Chrissie and Lois watch the meeting.  Lois is trying to leave a message to Clark and eyes Edge.

She runs into Lana.  All citizens raise their hands for opening the mines except Chrissie.  Lois and Lana don’t join her?  Clark apologizes for missing the meeting.  She is angry, but knows that he was handling something important.  Lois says she feels left out and goes to Lana’s girl’s night out.  This seems to shift the show to Sueprman and Lois.  At a party, Sarah brings in Jordan and Jonathan who greets Tag.  Superman joins General Lane at his office.  At a bar, Lois tells Lana about controlling men, Lana says that Kyle respects Lois for speaking her mind.  Lana notes that when Clark came back from Metropolis, she noted that he was more confident, because of Lois.  At the party, Sarah talks with Jordan at a fireplace, there really isn’t a relationship build until this scene.  He says he is happy now on the football team.  The boys have to deal with their Smallville Tag problem while Superman has take on the threat of Killgrave.  There is a mystery to what happens to Tag with a "special school", DC has the X-Men?  Also, a good moment with Lois against her father.  This episode of Superman and Lois lapses into the standard CW superhero show.
