Superman & Lois, “The Best of Smallville”, Review!

We had at the end of last episode, Morgan Edge’s associate, opening the mines.  It is early morning, fall, on the Kent farm.  The boys head to the kitchen as Lois watches the news reports on Superman's activity.  He flies through the corn field and the family begin to shuck corn stalks.  Clark is excited to donate the crops to Smallville.  Jonathan notes that Eliza is finally coming for a visit.  At Smallville High, Jonathan and Jordan meet with Sarah.  She awkwardly tries to ask Jordan out to the festival.  Jonathan gets a call from Eliza who dumps him over the phone.  One son up, one down.  Clark tells Lois he wants to make the dinner table into a work area for her.  Chrissy has called Lois about Sharon Powell and her son.  At the Gazette, Derek (Clayton James) explains that he was found.  He is jittery at his mother’s touch.  Sarah wants to shut down the story.  The base’s computer voice says that Lois Lane has been found to Captain Luthor.

At the community center, Lana is helping with donations, Sharon and Derek stop by, but Derek walks off with pain.  His eyes flare red and he blasts the walls with heat vision!  A side effect of Edge’s super army?  At the farm, Clark is putting away his mother’s things and flashes back to Martha talking about Lana.  Teenage Clark (Dylan Kingwell) hears thieves trying to take boxes of stolen goods.  He arrives there with a ski mask hiding his identity.  A gunman has a shotgun, but it’s taken away at superspeed.  The other criminal tries to shoot Clark, but he knocks away the bullet.  Now, Clark hears a distress call, a fire!  Clark uses x-ray vision to see the fire and uses super breath to freeze burning wreckage.  Later, Clark tells Lois that the donations were destroyed.  He also says he saw Sharon Powell at the fire.  Jordan explains that Eliza dumped Jonathan.  Lois checks on her son.  Still, Jonathan is upset and wants to be alone.  Lois checks on Kyle still in firefighter gear.  She shows him a picture of Derek.  Lois tells Chrissy and then is interrupted by Captain Luthor!

Captain Luthor says he is a reporter and worked at Luthor Corp.  He says he wanted to talk with Lois and investigate Morgan Edge.  She gives him her card if he checks out the mines.  Chrissy finds that Derek has disappeared and left her a text.  Chrissy uses Sharon’s phone to check on his location.  Jordan kinda tells his father about his date.  Jonathan wants to move back to Metropolis.  He is angry to be kept in the small town.  Jonathan wants to stay at Jordan Kelso’s place, but Clark nixes it.  Teenage Clark has an argument with his mother about his father.  Kyle tells Lana about Mitch who was hurt in the fire.  She doesn’t like that he was drinking.  Sarah is ready to leave for the Harvest Festival.  The boys have arrived and Jonathan is given a flask of alcohol, Superboy doesn’t drink!   Kyle on the couch sings Sarah a song in Spanish.  Derek is kissing Leslie Larr and they go into the mines with Chrissy watching them.  Leslie is a mystery and actually Lesla-Lar who first appeared in Action Comics #279 (1961)!

Clark turns off music in his sons’ room and flashes back to his teenage days.  Martha Kent shows Clark a case of a red crystal!  At the Festival, Jordan meets with Sarah, she takes him to try some elephant ears.  This is fair food, circles of fried dough with cinnamon.  Chrissy sees Leslie place Derek to be scanned in a machine.  On some hay bales, Jordan is happy to be with Sarah who tries to explain about her life.  Jonathan, drunk, walks up to his brother.  Sarah is angry that they are drunk.  Jonathan tries to apologize.  The two brothers walk away.  Lois is enjoying the festival food with Clark.  He knows that Jonathan has been drinking.  Lois is angry and wants them to get a ride share home.  Chrissy calls and tells Lois about Derek and Leslie Larr.  Clark is gone and Superman appears at the machine!  We don’t get Morgan Edge, but the Smallville and Captain Luthor stories are starting to collide!

Derek flies away and Superman pursues him.  Captain Luthor detects the Derek ignites a barn and corn fields with heat vision which is neutralized by Superman’s super breath.  Captain Luthor is pursuing them and sets the RV to auto drive while he takes out weapons.  Derek tells Kal-El that he is no long alone.  Captain Luthor sends up a blast that knocks down Derek and Superman.  Derek’s face cracks with red energy and he falls.  Captain Luthor walks up with a gun, but sees nothing at the crater.  The effects are much more of a cinematic quality than the earlier Flash episodes.  Later, Jonathan tries to apologize and Clark forgives him.  He admits that he left Smallville and says that he regrets his decision.  Clark tries to have Jonathan give Smallville more time.  He gives Jonathan a box, the one Martha, Martha!, gave to him.  Later, Clark tells Lois that Derek said he was “resurrected.”  At the Festival streets, Lana tells Lois and Clark that Morgan Edge has replaced the donations.  She also has a presentation to make and this is just wow, what a powerful moment of the Superman mythos!  There is more to Captain Luthor!  Sarah admits to ruining the date and sends Jordan to the Friend Zone, worse than the Phantom Zone.  May 18th is the next episode, can’t wait!
