The Disney Investor Day was on December 10th, Thursday, and is still the talk of the town. Disney+ has explosive content that is excited all number of fans! The Streaming Wars is won by the streamer with consistent and must-see content. This would be Disney+. We haven’t seen Netflix launch a Netflix Day. It has been aggressive in buying content, but Disney+ is strong with family friendly content. The promise from Bob Iger is to have 100+ titles a year! This part covers FX and part of Lucasfilm. Let’s not hold back the flood, it started with John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Productions, he noted that Disney has placed FX content in Hulu.
There are new shows for FX including The Old Man with Jeff Bridges, the anthology series, American Horror Stories, Reservation Dogs from Taika Waititi, and Y The Last Man. It is based on the comic book by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra, the world is stricken with a world wide plague, all males suddenly die except Yorick Brown and his monkey, Ampersand. The actor attached is Diane Lane. There was some production shake up, but it looks like Ben Schnetzer, who was in the Warcraft (2016) film, is cast as Yorick and Olivia Thirlby as Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister. The brilliance of the comic is to reflect our world and switches it around with women picking up the pieces of the world.
The prominent announcement from FX was an Alien series from Noah Hawley who also created Fargo and Legion. It concerns “Earth’s future” and is a combination of the first and second Alien films. There was a pause in the presentation while exclusive clips were shown to investors. Also, there was a new Shogun based on the James Clavell 1975 novel, it was new as a mini-series in 1980. Then, we had the Lucasfilm presentation with Kathleen Kennedy. She brought up The Mandalorian and showed the season two sizzler. Then, Kennedy noted that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are creating two spin-off series, Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. They are interconnected and will “culminate in a climactic story event”, the Battle of Jakku? Kennedy noted that the “next chapter” will debut on Christmas 2021.
She also spoke about Stagecraft, the new “virtual production tool” by ILM. They are looking to build three more Volumes, the 360 degree production stage in Los Angeles, London, and Australia; “building the studio of the future.” The new series coming from Lucasfilm include Andor, set for 2022, created by Tony Gilroy. He wrote the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Kennedy noted his work on the Bourne series. Kennedy noted that production started in London two weeks ago. It looks like Stephen Schiff, executive producer of The Americans, is producer for the show. The clip was shown for Andor and showed that Diego Luna is also executive producer. He said, “It’s the building of a revolution.” The start of the Rebellion was the subject of the animated Star Wars: Rebels.
The other series introduced is Obi-Wan Kenobi, directed by Deborah Chow, she was brilliant with chapter 3 and 7 of The Mandalorian. It takes place ten years after Revenge of the Sith (2005). Kennedy said that Hayden Christensen returns as Darth Vader. The first Star Wars prequel series, it sounds like the rise of Darth Vader, maybe it shows him training the Inquisitiors that were in Star Wars: Rebels. I don’t think Obi-Wan will meet with Vader in the series, maybe get hints of him, and I still think it will involve Satine Kryze, sister to Bo-Katan. I really want to see their first meeting and the could have been romance between them. The show is about their hidden child? Again, I thought it was interesting to see the birth year of Sabine Wren. She was born between the second meeting of Satine and Obi-Wan and Satine’s death. There was another investor pause.
The new animated series was started with The Bad Batch, they were introduced in season seven of Clone Wars, and described by Kennedy as going on “new missions in a rapidly changing galaxy.” It looks like the show could cover their start on Kamino all the way with Palpatine announcing the new Empire so the clone troopers could go rogue. It looks like Fennec Shand is appearing in the series tying it in with The Mandalorian. An anime series, Star Wars Visions, is promising. Kennedy said it is “ten visions of leading anime studios.” We can already seen that the Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train is igniting the worldwide box office. There is also Lando, a “new event series” from Justin Simeon from Dear White People. A reel was shown to feature “style and tone”, but there was another investor pause. It is unknown if this is Donald Glover, but he should be a producer and writer if he is involved. I also hope that it covers his early life on Socorro. Plus, it should have Billy Dee Williams, maybe reflecting on his past.
Kennedy also noted the Star Wars series from Leslye Headland who created Russian Doll. Acolyte will be on Disney+ and it covers the “final days of the High Republic era.” I’m uncertain about this one because I have almost no interest in the High Republic. This is a Star Wars event that involves novels and comic books. I think a video game would be best to unify the elements and give a respectful nod to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003). So it doesn’t appeal to me as Star Wars canon. Lastly, Lucasfilm Animation is working with ILM on A Droid Story. There was a cartoon series, Star Wars: Droids that featured Anthony Daniels’ voice, but it was not announced if he returns to the role. Kennedy describes it as a “new hero on a special mission.” These are ambitious projects. More will be in the next installments. These are announcements of productions so this may change, but all of them are already sensations!
