Star Wars: Resistance, “The Recruit”, Review!

A moon, this resolves to the dome of a droid, AC-4, a nice twist to the Star Wars opening, then it picks up to three T-85 X-Wings racing ahead of a red TIE fighter.  They are carrying intel for the New Republic.  The pilot, Kazudo Xiono or Kaz (Christopher Sean), swings around to try to bide time for the others to go to hyperspace.  He blasts at the TIE fighter and his wing is clipped.  The TIE fighter closes in!  The droid panics as torpedoes head for the X-Wing, they are shot down by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).  It’s great that Isaac voices the role, but we know it’s a cameo part.  He engages the TIE fighter talking to BB-8! This is Star Wars!  The pilot wants to take on the TIE fighter even though he’s dead in space.  Poe leads the TIE fighter and then pulls up, the pilot strikes the TIE fighter cockpit, then it jumps to hyperspace.  A blockade runner offers the X-Wing fishers refuge.  Poe explains the ship is a classic from the Battle of Scarif to the Battle of Jakku so most likely it is the Tantive IV.   He offers Kaz to be a pilot in the Resistance.  Kaz explains that his father is a senator.  The animation style looks like soft watercolor, which probably makes it easy on the eyes for the younger audience, I don’t mind it.  This world is interesting, more so than what is in the Poe Dameron comic book, but I would like to see the new pilots of the Star Wars: Join the Resistance book series, this series takes place before Force Awakens so maybe later. The series is created by Dave Filoni, but I sense it is turned over to other creative hands.

An announcement from General Organa for Poe and Kaz hands over the intel.  BB-8 converses with the droid.  Kaz heads over to refresher and then snoops around the ship.  Kaz stumbles into a room and sees BB-8 and a hologram of General Organa next to Poe Dameron. Poe explains the intel says there will be an attack by the First Order.  Now, Kaz wants to be a pilot.  Poe has a mission, but Kaz needs to contact his father first, it is a blurry transmission.  His father, Hamato Xiono (Tzi Ma) mentions that he helped Kaz into the Academy and the Navy so Kaz goes on his own. Poe Cameron explains that in the Outer Rim, is the planet Castellon, where he wants Kaz to be a spy for the Resistance.  He jumps a shuttle to Castellon. It heads down to the Colossus, a super tanker depot, Kaz knows it’s a hangout for pilots.  Poe says a First Order agent is there.  He lands the shuttle, BB-8 pops out first, Kaz sees a man thrown into the sea by a hulking alien.  Droids, aliens, it is rough place, Kaz sees three ships racing.  A Nikto, Neeku Vozo (Josh Brener) walks up to Kaz and introduces himself.  Neeku spreads Kaz’s boast around the base.

STAR WARS: RESISTANCE -- “The Recruit” -- Disney/Lucasfilm.

The bartender, Aunt Z (Tovah Fedlshuh), greets the "best pilot in the galaxy", Kaz.  She slides a drink to Jarek Yeager (Scott Lawrence).  Poe goes to talk to him.  Kaz tries to sit down and a droid bumps him off.  Kaz tries a game of what looks like darts and makes a bet with an Aleena, Grevel (Dee Bradley Baker, stalwart Star Wars voice actor).  The alien (same as Ratts Tyerell) gives him a dart that he throws into the back of a large, Klatooinian, Bolza Grool (Fred Tatasciore).  It moves threateningly and growling at Kaz. On a balcony, Poe tries to explain that he is fighting for the future, but Yeager doesn’t want any of it.  Kaz is thrown around and a bar fight breaks out.  Bolza punches through a metal plate and knocks down Kaz!  Poe and Yeager see the Aleena splattered against the window, very funny.  Yeager fires his blaster to stop the fighting.  Kaz explains that he isn’t the best star pilot and Neeku is disappointed.  Kaz apologizes to Neeku and says that he could be the best pilot if he raced.  Neeku announces that Kaz will enter the race and believes in him.  Aunt Z takes bets against Kaz.  Poe leaves Kaz there and says that the race will bring him in to find the spy.  He has BB-8 watch over him.  A nice set-up, but they have to tie some blaster action in along with the ship racing.

The seas of Castellon, ships race through rings around Colossus.  Kaz is frustrated with Neeku who says he wants to make Kaz’s piloting dream come true.  Neeku has the ambition to be on the best racing team and go to Goza Tower.  Yeager talks to Kaz about being a spy.  They head out to see the races and see Hype Fazon race ahead of the others.  It is great to see a Snivvian (same alien as Snaggletooth) and Ithorians, classic Star Wars aliens.  The holocams focus on Kaz as the best pilot in the known galaxy.  There are several pilots shown and Kaz picks the youngest pilot Torra Doza who has a smiling picture.  At the bar, Neeku is readying the Fireball for Kaz while Yeager says it’s a good ship.  The hangar opens and Kaz says it looks like “an explosion with wings.”  The mechanic, Tam Ryvora (Suzie McGrath), is angry that the Fireball is turned over to Kaz instead of her.  Yeager calls for the droid, Bucket, R1-J5.  It looks like the Star Tours pilot droid, RX-24.  Colossus, they are prepping the Fireball, Yeager goes over the missing parts for the ship.  They are met by the rival pilot, Torra Doza (Myrna Velasco).  Her design looks very anime.  She tells him not to hit the first marker.  Yeager tells him that the point of the race is not to win, but to survive.

Neeku and Kaz head to a parts shop run by Flix (Jim Rash), a squat, white chicken-like alien, and Orka (Bobby Moynihan from SNL), a small Ugnaught, and a pit droid greets them.  Kaz has to pay for the parts and they bet over the race.  Orka will give them used parts in exchange for a meal of a gorg.  In the market, the two friends walk, Kaz walks over to a tank of creatures, it is run by Bolza.  He holds Kaz up and he makes a deal.  Kaz brings back the gorg that hops around.  They load up Kaz with the parts.  Tam and Yeager see the condition of the parts and Kaz walks out frustrated.  At night, Kaz talks about his father running everything, Yeager overhears him. Morning, the Fireball is loaded, Yeager is on the comm, and reminds him of his mission.  The Fireball is lowered as well as Torra’s ship.  Kaz starts up the engine and it fails, the ship falls, and then the engines kick in.  He closes in and is right underneath Torra’s ship.  The Fireball’s engine starts to sputter and then burns.

The ship flies through the hoop and crashes, great action with the pov of the cockpit hitting the ocean. It always seems as if creators are trying to find a way to improve the Podracing scene in Episode I, but here I think the creative team knows how to get Lucas' love of speed and racing into a story so it works. Kaz recovers and thanks Yeager who gives him a place to stay.  We get a sunset scene with Kaz sitting next to BB-8.  The TIE fighter pilot, the mysterious Major Vonreg (Lex Lang), reaches a group of Star Destroyers above Star Killer Base.  He gives a report to Captain Phasma.  This is an excellent beginning for the animated series with great potential.  It seems like a cohesive universe with prequel and classic aliens in the Sequel Trilogy setting.  I hope they travel to other planets, like Batuu to be honest, and love that there is a main character, female pilot, but still animated, I would still like to see a live action, main character, female pilot.

A Proposal for a Wreck-It Ralph Arcade!

There hasn’t been a good track record for arcades for Disney.  For the longest time, 1977-2015, there was Starcade next to Space Mountain at Disneyland.  Then, there was the Atari Adventure arcade in the center of the Disneyland Hotel lake, there was a path down to the arcade, so it was literally an underwater arcade!  There was the DisneyQuest arcade at Orlando which opened in 1998 and closed in 2017.  It expanded to Chicago in 1999 and closed in 2001.  Next, was an almost pop-up arcade, Flynn’s Arcade, tied to Tron: Legacy (2010) as part of the ElecTRONica festival at Disney’s California Adventure.  It opened in 2010 and closed in 2012.  It was tested out at San Diego Comic Con in 2009.  The arcade featured Space Paranoids, the arcade game from the film, which you could play for free.  I remember seeing the Fix-It Felix Jr. arcade game from Wreck-It Ralph (2012) at the D23 Expo, but could never get around to playing it.
Space Paranoids, DCA, 2012, photo by the author.

I would put Litwak’s Family Fun Center & Arcade that was in the Wreck-It Ralph film at Pixar Pier.  Alternately, it could be in a remodeling of Tomorrowland, then it could also be themed to Tron (maybe next to a smaller version of Tron Lightcycle Power Run?) or in a remodeled Fantasyland which has no games.  It would feature three Fix-It Felix, Jr. arcade games, I also hope there is a Sugar Rush Speedway game, that are featured.  Then, there are several sections, Classic Games like Space Invaders, a Marvel Super Hero and Star Wars game section, and then a Tron section with Space Paranoids.  For the Classic Games section, there is a screen that shows scenes from the Wreck-It Ralph film. I don’t know what games are available, but I would like to see Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pac-man, and Centipede.  Also, Tempest, Battlezone, Frogger, Dig Dug, Pitfall!Q*bert, Paperboy, Burgertime, and Root Beer Tapper.
Then, Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace? (which was not in the Wreck-It Ralph film), Dance Dance Revolution X2, and I would like to see the Disney Tsum Tsum arcade game.  Possibly, Joust, Defender, and Ms. Pacman which were not in the film.  Also, pinball machines, Whack-a-Mole and other games that you can win tickets like Skee Ball and Basketball Hoops.  Next, is the Marvel games which may have a screen showing Marvel cartoons on the Disney XD channel, Ultimate Spider-Man and possibly past cartoons like The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and the games if possible; Marvel Super Heroes, Spider-Man: The Arcade Game, X-Men, Captain America and the Avengers, I don’t remember this one, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  The Star Wars section if it is approved would have a screen showing clips of Star Wars: Rebels and possibly Star Wars: Resistance.  I would actually like the Lego Star Wars cartoons if they can be authorized since they are more in line with the family audience.  I would like to see the several cabinets of the original Star Wars arcade game, sit down cabinet if available, the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game, the Return of the Jedi arcade game, and also the Star Wars: Battle Pod.

Fix-It Felix, Jr. Basic Fun! game, photo by the author.

Then, there is the Tron section.  I would imagine there is a screen showing the original Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010).  The games there would include the original Tron game, at least 3 cabinets, Space Paranoids would be featured, and also the Discs of Tron.  Part of the  concept for this arcade is not simply the arcade itself.  There could be competitions held for the video games in the various sections to win prizes.  There is a small merchandise area selling Flynn and Tron t-shirts, light cycle toys, and identity discs.  Also, backpack, hats, and jackets that were issued for Tron: Legacy.  This also extends to the Star Wars and Marvel sections.  Shirts of all of the classic video games and I hope the mini arcade games from Arcade Classics.   Also, there should be a food service area.  I’m thinking pizza, but for some reason pizza at Disney parks is greasy and unappetizing.  If there is a way to make pizza with fresh ingredients and possibly healthy pizza, fun and themed to Tron or Wreck-It Ralph, then pizza would be best.  If not, I would hope there is sandwiches that could also be fresh.  This arcade is not meant to be ported to malls or franchised.  It would be specific to Disney parks.

Doctor Who, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth”, Review!

The global premiere of the latest season of Doctor Who is here!  It has been a tightly kept secret with nothing revealed from the Cardiff set and no teases from the show’s creatives.  The episode was preceded by the Ultimate Watch Party hosted by Maude Garrett interviewing fans and celebrities.  The program began in 1963 with William Hartnell and has gone through twelve regenerations until we have finally reached the Thirteenth Doctor in the form of Jodie Whitaker.  She has taken the new form in “Twice Upon a Time” (2017) from Peter Capaldi.  It was interesting to see her in Attack the Block (2011), “The Entire History of You” (2011) episode of Black Mirror, and co-starred in Broadchurch (2013-2017) with the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant).  Broadchurch also had the same show runner, Chris Chibnall, as the new Doctor Who.  The Doctor is a Time Lord or Lady from Gallifrey who travels through time via the Tardis (Time and Relative Dimension in Space).  In this case, the Doctor’s Tardis has a malfunctioning Chameleon Circuit that has kept it in the form of a blue phone box from the Hartnell’s era, but it has been so iconic that the Doctor prefers to keep it that way. She has taken many fellow adventurers along with her in the Tardis called Companions.  This is basic knowledge to get non-Whovians up to date.

The pilot’s title refers to the 1976 sci fi film starring David Bowie.  We get a youtube cast about a young man, 19 years old, Ryan Sinclair (played by Hollyoaks actor Tosin Cole) speaking about a woman he knows who is special.  He is trying to learn to ride a bike from Grace O’Brien (Sharon D. Clarke) with help from Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh, host of The Chase).  Ryan wobbly makes his way down the hill path, but falls.  He tosses the bike and sits on the cliffside with Grace and Graham who talk to him a bit before heading off for their train.  The cinematography is beautiful and really adds to the quality of the production.  Ryan heads into the forest looking for the bike, when an energy form appears, he reaches out, and it disappears. Then, a blue object like a giant Hershey’s kiss shows up   A traffic officer, Yasmin Khan (played by another actor from Hollyoaks, Mandip Gill) sees a street argument between two drivers.  Yasmin is sent to the forest to discover the strange object.  Ryan identifies himself and she recognizes him from primary school.  He tells her to touch it and the object glows.  On the train, Grace kisses Graham, and they see a storm that sends Graham out of his seat.  The darkened train has stopped with no power.  The cabin lights up some power.  Grace tries to call Ryan about the train and is cut off.  An explosion, then tendrils of energy lash out, a woman leaps up.  They point to the energy and she attacks it with a pole.  The ball of energy shocks everyone before leaping upwards.

DOCTOR WHO -- “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” -- Sophie Mutevelian / BBC Studios.

Yasmin and Ryan are suddenly there, she asks the woman, “Madame?”, which confuses the stranger who is surprised she is a woman.  She says, “Half an hour ago, I was a white-haired Scotsman”, very funny line.  Yasmin interviews the other passenger, Carl (Johnny Dixon), while the Doctor gathers her team.  The Doctor explains that she fell out of her exploding Tardis.  Graham is confused by her and The Doctor says she’s an alien.  Carl doesn’t want any part of it and walks away.  The Doctor asks if there is anything “out of the ordinary” and Ryan raises his hand.  In Yasmin’s police car, they all introduce each other, Ryan shows his photos on his cell phone of the object.  Mina explains that Ryan has a coordination disorder.  The object is gone, taken into a truck that makes it’s way through night streets, at a warehouse two young men inspect the object.  Alone, one man, Ramesh Sundur (Asif Khan) sets up cameras around the object and watches it in a chair.  The Doctor, Graham, Grace, and Ryan see Yasmin off to check on reports.  The Doctor passes out.  Yasmin checks in at the Sheffield police station.  Ryan scrolls through his laptop at his home with Grace.  The Doctor is glowing and energy flows out o her breath.  At the warehouse, the object cracks and smokes.  The energy ball has reached a rooftop sending out buses of energy searching.  The cameras explode at the warehouse and the Doctor is startled awake.  The Doctor’s introduction is brilliant, we work out who she is while dealing with the situation.

The Doctor sees a glow on everyone’s collar bones, DNA bombs that can destroy them, the energy ball planted them.  She uses Ryan’s phone to zap the DNA bomb.  The warehouse, Ramesh looks at the object like an egg, and a robotic suit emerges.  He asks about his sister.  The creature raises it’s hand and kills him.   The Doctor gives directions as Yasmin drives.  She is tracking it through Ryan’s cell phone into the rainy streets.  There’s an explosion and the robotic suit appears.  They run after it.  Ryan leads them to the warehouse, they see the dead man, and he sees the object.  The Doctor identifies it as a “transport chamber.”  Ryan explains that he touched the symbols.  The Doctor realizes that she could build a sonic screwdriver! Yasmin and Ryan go through the man’s computer, and there is an icon, “If I die click here.”  The Doctor explains about the regeneration to Grace and Graham.  The Doctor works with industrial tools to form the new sonic screwdriver, it is awesome!  The video shows the man explaining that his sister was taken.  The Doctor uses the sonic screwdriver to scan the object.  She finds a “re-call circuitry” and realizes that two warring aliens are there on Earth.  The Doctor hopes to capture the aliens and separate them away.  Graham gets a call.  A man staggers towards the robotic alien and roses his salad at it.  He gets the killing touch from it.  The energy ball on the rooftop is confronted by the Doctor who shocks it with cables with the help of her Companions.  Her sonic screwdriver scan has found a merged creature and finds a projection of Carl.  The robotic alien is there to hunt.  She asks it about teeth.  The alien removes it’s helmet and the removed teeth are trophies around it’s face!

The Doctor realizes that it is hunting a human like a Predator to become a leader.  She thinks the energy ball is a weapon breaking the rules.  The alien reaches down to take the weapon’s energy and teleports away.  Carl listens to audio affirmations at his construction job.  An older man is the next victim of the alien.  They are racing to find Carl.  The alien climbs up Carl’s construction crane.  She has Graham and Grace evacuate the site and enlists the help of Yasmin and Ryan.  The trio races to a construction crane.  Grace and Graham are evacuating the crew for an emergency power issue.  The Doctor warns Carl and he climbs out to the crane.  The alien reaches the cab.  Ryan and Yasmin reach the top and the Doctor’s plan to have them swing her across and save the day in time for a fried egg sandwich.  Yasmin finds the correct key and Ryan shows how to operate it with his cell phone.  The alien fires it’s power shorting out the crane, it is a far distance to jump to the next crane!  Carl repeats his affirmation and jumps, he is caught by the alien!  The Doctor backs up and makes the jump!  She’s a thousand times more brave than any other Doctor!   The alien takes off his helmet and she checks her coat, needs a new one, and threatens to destroy the re-call circuit.  It threatens to set off the DNA bombs.   Grace kisses Graham and he takes a cable out to the construction crane.  The alien asks the Doctor who she is and she remember now.  It activates the bombs, but the Doctor transferred the bombs to it, and Carl kicks off the alien.  Grace shocks the energy ball and falls!  Back to the narration, Ryan talks about his mother.  He resolves to try to ride his bike again for her.  Ryan falls and falls while the Doctor watches.  Yasmin says that the Doctor needs a change of clothes and she needs their help to find the Tardis.  The Doctor modifies the alien’s machinery to transport herself to the Tardis and instead transports all of them into space!  No Tardis until episode two, great, also I don’t know which character I like more.  Ryan is our pov character, flawed, but still brave.  If there is any question of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, then those still questioning her are not Whovians.  This is a great beginning!

FIDM Art of Television Costume Design!

I had visited FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) for the Academy Awards exhibition of costumes, but it was just a few days when I realized the 12th Annual Art of Television Costume Design exhibition would end on Saturday, yesterday!  This was of course to display the costumes and the designers which started on August 21st before the Emmy Awards which aired on September 17th.  I’m glad I caught it before the exhibition closed, I’m fascinated to see costumes up close, and also used on what would be on television screens.  If you have missed it, hopefully you can catch it next year, the exhibition is free and you can take pictures and video as long as it is not flash pictures.  Side note: many of the visitors are patient and aware that you might want to shoot the costumes, but be patient, also the lighting is harsh so be extra steady and move you camera around to find the right angles.

Westworld costumes at FIDM, photo by the author.

There is a wall when you enter that has the title of the exhibition, this leads to a side wall that has pics of the various costumes.  Then, you get the first costume, Black Lightning!  This is impressive since it is has the internal lighting glowing with the lightning bolt patterns.  The image is so striking, and no lighting on it, you can believe Cress Williams is there in costume.  Next to it are the costumes from Outlander, the Starz show, based on the  Diana Gabaldon novels.  There is the costumes of James Fraser and Claire Fraser in their 18th century outfits.  Frank Randall’s modern clothes and two of Claire Randall’s modern looks.  This goes on to costumes from Grown-ish and Unbreakable Kimmy Schimdt.  At the end is costumes from The Crown. The centerpiece in the middle of the room is a circular display of the costumes from the Netflix show, GLOW.

Black Lightning's costume, photo by the author.

On the other side is the dresses from the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and further on is the costumes from Game of Thrones.  A White Walker is standing in the back, upfront is Sansa Stark’s royal robes, next to her is the fur outfit of Jon Snow and then the fur robe of Daenerys Targaryen.  The next room had a display of the books that were adapted to television.  Then, there were costumes of the Netflix series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and TNT adaptation of Caleb Carr’s novel, The Alienist.  Turn to the left and there is a series of room and turn to the right you can see the costumes of Star Trek: Discovery with the Mirror Universe costume of Michael Burnham in the back and in front is the armor of Emperor Georgiou, also in the back is Sarek’s red robes, then Ash Tyler’s uniform next to Dr. Hugh Culber’s medical whites. Turn to the left and there were the costumes from the recent Jesus Christ Superstar tv musical.

Michael Burnham's costume from Star Trek: Discovery, photo by the author.

A side room had costumes from Westworld including Sakura, the Shogun in the back, Maeve Millay front and center of course, Akane in the back, and the black samurai shitagi of Musashi to the side.  Across from it was costumes from The Deuce.  The next room on the left were costumes from The Orville; Navarian Ambassador, Lurenek, Charlize Theron’s character, Pria Lavesque, and her costume, Kirll Captain Haros, and Sazeron.  There was Santa Clarita Diet costumes along with Another Period.  There are of course more costumes, this is just an overview of what was there, I would like to see some of shows returning next year.  Check with the FIDM Facebook page and website to keep up to date with their current exhibitions at the FIDM museum and galleries.  It is located at 919 S. Grand Avenue in Los Angeles.

Strolling Through the (Theme) Park One Day: Atlantis - The Dig!

The new Aquaman trailer has whales and turtle-like vessels in an Atlantis lit by bioluminescence.  It was always my ambition to go to Atlantis, but it was really the casino and resort in Bermuda that would be close enough for me.   I went there as one of the destinations of a cruise I took in 2010.  It was an easy to make, but had to make special arrangements for the cruise.

The Atlantis Resort features the Aquaventure which is a 141-acre area of water slides including the 60-foot Leap of Faith that drops riders through a tunnel in a shark lagoon, a mile long Rapid River water ride, 11 swimming pools, and beaches.  The Atlantis Paradise Island opened in 1998.  The Atlantis Casino patrons waited in a queue on the dock.  By the way, the weather in Bahamas is incredible, I asked the person checking us in about it and she said it was always pleasant and sunny.  We were taken to a four person cart that drove from the dock to Paradise Island.

The Dig, 2010, photo by the author.

I remember it as an entertaining, breezy ride.  Then, there is the flying fish circular fountain in front of the casino.  Entering the hotel, it is very elegant, with some Atlantis touches like a throne and a display of crystals that look like a bouquet or bursting from the base.  The gambling was casual, not chaotic or depressing like some casinos, but I wasn’t there for gambling.  I was walking around the hotel, pushed a door outside, and saw the aquarium which looked like a regular hotel lake, then saw a ray flap it’s fin.

There are 14 lagoons filled with eight million gallons of ocean water and 50,000 aquatic animals.  It was just stunning, walking on the outside of a hotel, I saw the shark lagoon which was below a bar.  Patrons were casually drinking next to a rail and sharks below!  The water slides are impressive, one structure, the Power Station, had flower-like petals at the top of four towers.  I actually wandered into The Dig which had a table with explorer notes.  Which is actually the end of The Dig.  There isn’t stickers or wrist bands to indicate you paid admission.  I did pay later.

Diving suit, at The Dig, 2010, photo by the author.

The Dig is on a lower level with massive windows.  I may have been too stunned to read any signage that made locations clear, but I eventually paid at the Atlantis Adventures desk at the clock tower and entered The Dig.  Passes are complimentary to hotel guests.  I have been to many aquariums from the Waikiki Aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, to the New York Aquarium at Coney Island.  Even the St. Andrews Aquarium in Scotland.  Monterey Bay Aquarium is brilliant in bringing the ocean inside, the beaches, waves, and the stunning windows that tower above you.  Still, it is theming that is impressive about The Dig, tropical species swimming around bull-headed statues.

Schools of fish swirling around statues, an astrobe, and rock formations.  Manta rays swooping past the sunken face of a statue.  Moray eels gasping while hanging out of pots. There are colorful tropical fish around an entwined sculpture.  The Atlantis theming is sprinkled throughout, there is a room with various diving suits out of a steampunk fantasy.  It would be interesting if the world premiere or a premiere for Aquaman was held at the Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas resort.  They hold many concerts and special events there.  Everyone deserves a chance to visit the Bahamas, a beautiful piece of paradise, and get a glimpse of Atlantis at Atlantis Paradise Island!

Venom Review!

This film is intriguing since it plods along slowly at the beginning trying to focus on Eddie Brock, then starts to roll when the symbiote attaches to him.  Then, it becomes very much like Upgrade, which had a voice inside the protagonist and forcing him to do evil acts.  It shifts into Incredible Hulk (2008) where two CG creatures battle it out.  The end result does keep the movie going without Spider-Man.  The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer who also directed Zombieland (2009).  Here the film suffers from pacing and CG that makes the symbiotes look like black Nickelodeon slime.  Venom has a story by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg with a screenplay by the writers and Kelly Marcel and Will Beall.  Of course, the character was previously played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3 (2007).

The character was created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane in Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988). They are given a quick credit at the end rather than a full credit.  The film is based on the 1993 Venom: Lethal Protector series which had Eddie Brock move to San Francisco.  This was by David Michelinie and art by Mark Bailey and Ron Lim.  Also, Planet of the Symbiote 1995 storyline which had Eddie separating from Venom and the threat of a symbiote invasion.  This was by the team of David Michelinie and art by Ralph Cabrera, Joe St. Pierre, Kyle Hotz, Darick Robertson, and Steve Lightle.  Besides Michelinie and McFarlane, these other creators are not given screen credit.

The movie begins with the descent of a shuttle which is tracked at the headquarters of the Life Foundation. Carlton Drake, played by Riz Ahmed, is concerned for the safety of it’s cargo.  He of course has been in some great films, I took notice of him in Centurion (2010), and of course Rogue One (2016).  His motivation is confusing, he is worried about humans destroying the world, so he wants to achieve symbiosis with the symbiote for what reason?  Where did the symbioses come from?, in the comics they originate from the planet Klyntar, it is never clear in the movie. What is dramatic about the film is the score by Ludwing Goransson who also scored Black Panther

The shuttle picked up the symbiotes on Klyntar or the symbioses were traveling to Earth and taken in the shuttle in transit?  Something occurs which causes the shuttle to crash into Malaysia.  The Life Foundation recovery team brings three symbioses in cases.  So the symbiotes were found in cases or trapped there?  An astronaut, Jameson (Chris O’Hara) is found to have recovered from the crash and he passes the symbiote to a paramedic (Michelle Lee). The astronaut hints at John Jameson, the son of J. Jonah Jameson, introduced in comics and played by Daniel Gillies in Spider-Man 2 (2004).  The paramedic uses her symbiote powers to escape the ambulance and wanders the roads of Malaysia.  It shifts to six months later in San Francisco.

We have the apartment of Eddie Brock played by Tom Hardy.  He of course has played in the superhero universe playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and had the lead role in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).  Hardy is also listed as executive producer.  Eddie is wakened by his girlfriend, Anne Weying, played by Michelle Williams.  This is her first superhero film, but has been in genre pictures like Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).  A great actress, but a standard part, the girlfriend who has a new boyfriend, but it is really the original boyfriend that we are following.  She has moments especially for Venom fans.  Her character was introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #375 (1993). Anne is a lawyer for the Life Foundation.

Eddie shows kindness to a homeless woman, Maria (Melora Walters), and visits the store of Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu).  She is shaken down for protection money by a gunman and Eddie can only helplessly watch.  Eddie rides his motorcycle through the streets of San Francisco.  We see clips of Eddie’s reporting for The Eddie Brock Show.  He has a friendly conversation with the guard, Richard (Emilio Rivera), so we get Eddie is a nice guy. Eddie meets with his boss who is a kinda J Jonah Jameson.  His assignment is to interview Carlton Drake.  The Life Foundation headquarters nestled in the hills across the Golden Gate Bridge.  He is concerned with Dr. Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate) working with the symbiotes.  Slate has some interesting voice work in her c.v. including Harley Quinn in The Lego Batman Movie (2017).  Her character is basically the scientist who has doubts about the course of her project.

Eddie meets Anne for a dinner date.  Afterwards, Eddie goes to Anne’s laptop to go through her files when she is asleep.  Dr. Skirth monitors the symbiote as it attaches to a rabbit.  Later, Drake asks for human testing.  The interview happens with Eddie asks question using the information from Anne’s files.   The breach of trust results in Anne being fired, she hands her ring back to Eddie and he is fired from his job.  In Malaysia, the symbiote is transferred to an older woman (Vickie Eng) and then a young girl (Zeva DuVall) at the airport.  This is a lingering threat that Carlton lets slip.  Dr. Skirth contacts Eddie and brings him in with the threat to innocent people as part of the experiments.

Eddie finds that Maria is infected with the symbiote and he frees her.  There is  problem with the suitability of the host; the symbiotes were killing their hosts.  The reason behind why Venom chose Eddie Brock is interesting since it is not simple revenge. Eddie is able to escape the Life Foundation guards with Venom-enhanced powers.  This is when the movie starts moving, it takes some time to get there.  Venom's finishing move is to chomp the heads off victims, but it is bloodless with the PG-13 rating.  He is pursued by the security chief of the Life Foundation, Roland Treece (Scott Haze). I kept thinking that he and his men would be injected with the symbiotes like in the Swamp Thing (1982) movie, their ruthlessness would make them perfect candidates, but nope.

Eddie returns home starts having cravings wolfing down food, but he can’t hold it down.  Later, he tries to meet Anne at a dinner, she is on a date with her new boyfriend, Dr. Dan Lewis (Reid Scott). I understand his part, but all things being equal, he is a more stable partner than Eddie even before he was infected.  Eddie jumps into the lobster tank and begins to tear into one, he needs a living thing to eat.  It slowly becomes apparent that Venom is a parasite attached to Eddie.  Venom’s conversations with Eddie makes it interesting and fun.  Hardy also voices Venom so this is like his darker half speaking to him a la Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  This is almost beat for beat what happens in Upgrade

He takes on Treece and his men who try to use tasers on him, but Eddie goes full Venom extending his arms Mr. Fantastic-style to attack them.  Of course, he can’t use webbing because that is too much of a Spider-Man connection.  He goes to get examined by Dan Lewis who uses a MRI that makes him writhe in pain because it is the same frequency that weakens symbiotes.  A vulnerability, also extreme heat, that is similar to the comics. Eddie has to deal with Venom, take on Rio and take on the symbiote that makes it's way to San Francisco, Riot.  The mid-credit scene continues the story and the end credit is a scene from the next Spider-Man film.  The movie suffers from pacing and character development, but Hardy with the Venom voice over just makes it fresh enough to make it worth recommending.

Happy Birthday Melissa Benoist!

Happy Birthday Melissa Benoist! She has had a great career in television with her first series playing Marley Rose on Glee from 2012 to 2014.  Melissa played Nicole, the girlfriend of Miles Teller’s character, in Whiplash (2014) directed by Damien Chazelle.  She had a cameo role in the drama Danny Collins (2015).  Next, Melissa appeared in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, The Longest Ride (2015).  Melissa is known now for playing the lead, Kara Danvers, in Supergirl starting in 2015. Melissa played real life widow, Katherine Russel, in Patriot's Day (2016).  Former Glee star, Grant Gustin, appeared as The Flash on “Worlds Finest” episode of Supergirl in March.

Then, starred in the Invasion! Episodes of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.  In 2017, Melissa had another Glee reunion singing with Grant Gustin under the control of Darren Criss’ villain the Music Meister.  Then, she crossed over as Supergirl in Crisis on Earth-X episodes of Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.  Melissa also played the villainous counterpart of Supergirl on Earth-X, Overgirl.  She played Rachel Koresh in the real life mini-series Waco (2018).  Melissa debuted on the Broadway stage playing the lead role in Beautiful: The Carol King Musical from June to August.  She has returned for a fourth season of Supergirl set for October 14th.  Happy Birthday Melissa Benoist!

What Comic Book Universe (Television and Movies) Will Cross-Over?

The television program, Arrow, seemed to open up to a wider universe with the introduction of Barry Allen in “The Scientist” (2013).  Grant Gustin then spun off into his own series in 2014.  We also have a side note in the Fox show Gotham which told the years when James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) made the city safe while the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) grew up to become Batman.  Then, in Arrow, there was Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer who became the Atom.  Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) was revived and became the White Canary.  The team of Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh) became Firestorm in The Flash.  The same year brought Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renee) who was Hawkgirl.  They were joined by the former Flash villains, Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heatwave  (Dominic Purcell) to form the Legends of Tomorrow.  This was all in 2015. Flash also encountered Jay Garrick, the Flash, of Earth-2, in “Flash of Two Worlds” (2015).  There was also Melissa Benoist as Supergirl.  Flash crossed over to her show with the episode “Worlds Finest” (2016) and we learned he can from Earth-1.  Supergirl exists on Earth-38.

We also had the shows crossing over in Invasion!.  In 2017, all of the shows crossed over in Crisis on Earth-X. It was hinted at with a newspaper headline from 2024 that Flash disappears during the Crisis and “Red skies vanish”, which points to the comic book storyline, Crisis at Infinite Earths.  The Berlanti shows, produced for Warner Bros. Television, seem to following the comic books.  The anomaly was another universe with the DC Extended Universe with the films starting with Man of Steel (2013) which led to Justice League (2017).  Tyler Hoechlin was introduced as Superman in “The Adventures of Supergirl” (2016) episode of Supergirl. We also saw the Ezra Miller version of Barry Allen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) which I call Beavis.  Krypton is the series on the SyFy cable network that started in 2018.  It told the back story of Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), the ancestor of Superman.  There is also the Titans and Doom Patrol series on the DC Universe streaming service.  Viewers understand that the television and movie universes are separate and don’t cross over.  No hope there for DC Comics characters.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe of course started with Iron Man (2008) and we saw all of the heroes together in The Avengers (2012).  In 2013, we had Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which featured Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) from the MCU films.  Still, the series was not cohesive with the events of the film universe.  There seemed to be more of a connection with the Agent Carter (2015-2016) series.  The show was created by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who are the screenwriters for Avengers: Infinity War (2017) and four other films (out of 20 films total) in the MCU! Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) was of course introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).  There were hints of the MCU with the premiere of Daredevil in 2016 on Netflix. The show featured Charlie Cox in the lead role.  This ultimately lead to all of the Netflix Marvel heroes uniting in Defenders (2017).

Sony’s Spider-Man crossed over to the MCU with Captain America: Civil War (2016) and then Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).  Still, it seems that the television universes are separate from each other and also the film MCU.  They are all Marvel Comics heroes, but it seems like the characters stay in their own groups of television and movies.  There seems little chance that they will all show up in the next Avengers movie.  So is there any hope of crossing over television and movie superhero universes?  X-Men (2000) was another Marvel Comics' property in this case released by 20th Century Fox.   It was a black leather jacket version of the team of mutant super heroes.  The film did introduce Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  The X-Men films seemed to sputter out with the third movie with a new director. Wolverine was so popular a character he spun off into his own films starting with X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).

The film did introduce Deadpool who of course spun off in his own film in 2016.  For films, we also have New Mutants which was the title connected to the X-Men comic book.  In 2017, Legion debuted on the FX cable network, it starred Dan Stevens as David Haller.  He was the son of Charles Xavier which ties into the X-Men movies.  Then, there was The Gifted which begun to air on the Fox network in 2017.  It dealt with the aftermath of the end of the X-Men and the mutant survivors.  The show has Simon Kinberg, Bryan Singer, and Lauren Shuler Donner as executive producers.  Simon Kinberg is the director and producer of Dark Phoenix.  So the same creative teams are on the television show and the movie.  This makes it the best chance of a cross over between television and movie universes.  The event that ended the X-Men could be what happens in Dark Phoenix.  We might see mutants like Polaris (Emma Dumont) and Thunderbird (Blair Redford) appearing in cameos in Dark Phoenix.  If so, they will be able to accomplish something no comic book universe has accomplished.

The Outpost, “The Dragman is Coming”, Finale Review!

Everit Dred is at the Outpost looking for Talon, Whythers and the Mistress tried to lead a revolution and got crossbow bolts for it.  Talon and her friends are returning from the shrine.  Talon, Garret, and Janzo reach fly-ridden posts left by Greyskins, Janzo sees colipsum crystals, he realizes that the coliseum are eggs, the flies are females.  Garret sees that Greyskins are using colipsum to turn humans into Plaguelings!  Finally, we get the life cycle of the Plaguelings.  Ropes are dropped from the Outpost wall while Garret and Talon pull themselves up.  They see Everit Dred and he orders Janzo to be pulled up.  Swords are held to Janzo’s neck. Talon faces Dred.  He holds up her hand and slices it with a short sword seeing her black blood.  Talon is held up by her arms as a captive.  Dred asks why her people did not summon the demons.  He wants her to read the page and summon the demons, then strikes Talon when she refuses.  Next, he threatens to kill her friends in front of her.

Talon has a noose placed on her neck, everyone else is there with nooses; Janzo, Garret, the Mistress, and Marshall Whythers.  He points to Garret next.  She says the words.  Dred draws his sword, but no demons.  Higgs announces their deaths.  Hooded figures kill the guards and then walk amongst the villagers.  A bell is tolled as the guards warn about the attack.  The hooded soldiers kill the guards and raise the gate.  Queen Gwynn rides in with her soldiers.  A soldiers cuts the rope for Talon, it’s Willis.  It is a coup like in Robin Hood.  Dred cuts through enemies and kills Willis.  Talon fights soldiers and then sees Dred.  Garret leads the coup.  Talon does through colored drapes and then duels with Dred.  She strikes him down and holds a sword to Dred.  Gwynn stops her and tells Talon that he has to brought to trial.  Garret holds her knife hand.  Gwynn draws her sword and says to Dred, “I am your queen!”  Usually the coup is to restore a king, so this is great to see a queen take her throne, though Gwynn was not formally crowned.  I wonder why Essa Khan is missing from the battle.

The funeral of General Calkussar and the fallen soldiers is held.  It is presided over by Gwynn and Garrett.  Night, the Outpost, bells toll, and Dred is brought at the same executioner platform. Gwynn goes over all of Everit Dred’s murders.  She says her family ruled for seven generations.  He is to die at sunrise, uh oh, hasn’t she learned to kill the bad guys straight away?  She pronounces Garret as commander.  Naya looks on in the audience.  Gwynn makes Whythers marshall again, I figured this would happen, and he wants to check on Higgs.  He is busy trying to take as much money as he can carry.  He grabs a crossbow, Danno takes the crossbow bolt, Higgs tries to run and falls.  Whythers drives his sword into Higgs.   Danno dies in Whythers’ arms.  The Mistress closes the door on her tavern and hugs Janzo.  She is happy that she can now make colipsum.  Janzo defies her.  He takes out the bag of colipsum and goes to burn it.  Later, Garret has a drink with his father.  He thanks him and they have a drink.  Talon is at the Smith’s place and Janzo enters.  He is wondering about the Fire Song of the Prophecy.  He holds her necklace they took from the shrine to the fire and it glows blue.  Very Lord of the Rings.

There is a sleeping guard, Naya has taken the keys to free Dred, yup that was going to happen.  One guard to protect the leader of the Prime Order?  She hopes he will free her family.  He kills the guard startled by his appearance.  The dangers of sleeping on the job.  Gwynn is in her room when Garret enters who is there to take her to the celebration.  She gets close to Garret and they kiss.  Talon bursts into the door with Garret and Gwynn on the bed.  She tells Janzo and then pulls him down as Dred swings his sword.  He has Janzo hostage and she drops her sword.  Janzo brings up a fireplace poker and sizzles Dred’s face.  Dred stabs him.  Janzo tells her to use the poker to cauterize the wound.  She kisses him and then applies the burning poker.  She loves him like her brother.  Talon watches over Janzo and sees that the wound is turning green.  He sends her for some powder.  Essa Khan meets with Everit Dred.  The Mistress sends out the messenger pigeon for colipsum.  Gwynn doesn’t know who to trust and there is Naya.  Talon gets the powder and sees Garrett in his armor to tell her Dred escaped.  He says there is a team to hunt for Dred.  She goes to take care of Janzo.  Garrett leads his team from the Outpost.  Janzo is asleep and Talon takes the necklace, she drops it in the fireplace, and hears voices.  It is Ilyn.  She writes on a page to hand to Talon.  She says, “I’m the Dragman.”  What an ending!  The series has a way of putting a twist and we haven’t come to the fulfillment of the prophecy and the end of Dred.

Heroes in Crisis #1 Review!

Heroes in Crisis is shaking the DC Earth!  Crisis in a DC title is an event ever since Marv Wolfman and George Perez’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. Identity Crisis (2004) by Brad Meltzer, Infinite Crisis (2005-2006) by Geoff Johns which tied into Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Final Crisis (2008) by Grant Morrison which had Darkseid as a villain. Tom King is shaking things up again not by threatening the DC Universe, but more on the ground level, tearing up the super heroes themselves.  Clay Mann provides the art.  He worked with Tom King on a few issues of his Batman run most notably Batman #36-37 (2018) part of the “Super Friends” storyline.  Heroes in Crisis is a nine issue limited series from DC Comics.  The cover by Mann has the Trinity of Superman holding a gold mask, Batman, and Wonder Woman.  They are surrounded by other heroes including Mister Miracle and Big Barda from King’s other series.  Scattered amongst them are the white robes and gold masks to keep heroes anonymous and the Sanctuary house behind them.  In the front are the caretakers of Sanctuary, Harley Quinn and Booster Gold.

The first issue has the title, “I’m Just Warming Up.”  It opens in an unknown cafe in Gordon, Nebraska.  At the counter is Booster Gold getting a cup of coffee poured by the waitress.  A patron notices someone at the window.  It is Harley Quinn peering inside.  Booster Gold tells the waitress that there will be a fight.  This resolves to a double page splash page with a red streak over the Nebraska fields.  “Heroes in Crisis” is across the fields like cloud shadows.  Then, we get Harley Quinn speaking confidentially (at Sanctuary?) behind a gold shield about trauma.  She was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum before the Joker got into her head.  Mann brings this confession in a nine panel grid.  I have the feeling that Harley Quinn is the hero of the story.  She orders dessert at the diner while Booster Gold attempts to tell her a secret.  The waitress serves Harley Quinn some peach pie.  Then, we get a sonic boom that scatters crows picking at corpses(!), this is the arrival of Superman at Sanctuary.  Then, we get the confession of Blue Jay, introduced in Justice League of America #87 (1971) as a nod to the Avengers.  He admits that his power to shrink is out of control and he wakes up buried by his bed sheet.

Harley Quinn finishes her pie and goes over a quote from Sigmund Freud about being damaged by the demons inside.  She takes the knife from her dessert and stabs Booster Gold.  He unleashes his power that flares through the diner.  Booster Gold warns her and Harley Quinn wipes the blood from her knife to make streaks on her cheeks.  Batman and Wonder Woman are converging on the site.  Batman tells Superman not to disturb the crime scene.  Splash page, we see Superman standing before the bodies of Citizen Steel, Lagoon Boy, created by Erik Larson in Aquaman #50 (1998), a woman in the white robes and gold mask, and Hot Spot, a character introduced in Dan Jurgens’ Teen Titans #1 (1996).  There are other bloody bodies scattered around the Sanctuary house.  We get the stunning event and the mystery of the killer.  Then, we get the confession of Hot Spot, in his hoodie and hat, explaining his fear.  He says, “I’m just warming up” which of course we get the title reference.  Superman looks at his body, a tear is falling out of his eye, and tries to remember his catch phrase.  Booster Gold tries to blast Harley Quinn as she beats him and then flies her off away from the cafe.  The trinity looks at the bodies inside the house.  The major character deaths would be a spoiler!  On the wall is written in blood, ‘The Puddlers Are All Dead.”  Wonder Woman explains that puddlers are people who remove impurities from metal.  Superman is shocked that they built Sanctuary to help heroes.  The harsh reality has some entered the superhero world which leads to interesting potential for this series.

Happy Birthday Julie Andrews!
